4/20 Becomes A Day Of Reefer Madness

1971
Five friends at San Rafael High School in California coin the term "4:20" as a euphemism for smoking pot. April 20th becomes a popular day to spark one up, as does 4:20 pm. Note that the Boston song "Smokin'" clocks in at 4 minutes, 20 seconds, and if you multiply the title numbers in Bob Dylan's "Rainy Day Women #12 And #35," you get 420. Dude!

4/20 is a celebrated day in stoner culture, and there are almost as many tales about the origin of the term "420" as there are strains of the green stuff. Some people swear that it comes from the Bob Dylan song "Rainy Day Women #12 and 35," because if you happen to be sitting around doing math while you're high, you'll realize that multiplying 12 and 35 gets you 420. The fact that the chorus is a gleeful "Everybody must get stoned!" helps perpetuate the myth, but a myth is all it is.

Deadheads are known for their love of the herb, but they didn't coin the term. The Boston song "Smokin'" clocks in at 4 minutes, 20 seconds, and while that's a killer coincidence, that's not where 420 starts either. It has nothing to do with police codes or the birth or death dates of any rock legends, and it definitely doesn't originate with any historical events that we wish we could forget.

Here's the truth: In the late 1970s, a group of teens at San Rafael High School in Northern California discover a mutual love of the sticky sweet herb. Since toking up in the halls is frowned upon even in the liberal '70s, the students - who call themselves the Waldos because they like to lean on walls - have to wait until after school to get high, so they meet up at 4:20 every day to smoke the devil's lettuce. 420 soon becomes a not-really-secret euphemism for getting stoned, and decades later, it becomes a solid part of our cultural lexicon.

In perhaps the most fitting commemoration of the number 420, legendary stoners Snoop Dogg(whose "Up In Smoke Tour" ended on 4/20/2000) and Willie Nelson record the song "Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die" on 4/20/2009, in - where else? - Amsterdam.

LESBOS,THE ISLAND OF COMPASSION

For a decade, the Greek island of Lesbos was my one true getaway. As a travel writer, I’m usually working when I visit beautiful places, following a strict schedule and always taking notes. But on this idyllic island just off the coast of Turkey, I would do nothing but eat grilled sardines and watch the sun glimmer on the clear blue Aegean. I was content to fill my days with a swim and a book, largely because Lesbos never felt like my place. It was my husband’s, and always had been.
Peter and his Greek-American family had been visiting Lesbos since 1992. They had no roots there but felt immediately at home in the tiny seaside retreat of Skala Eressos. They loved the village’s narrow stone streets and its beachfront boardwalk lined with unpretentious cafes, its stark, rocky landscape and its broad, placid bay.
By the time I joined the annual trip, my husband's family had long since established their routine. Hotel: Galini; restaurant: Panagiota's or Costa's places; film at the open-air cinema: yes. They also spoke all the Greek. I nodded along vaguely, even on the day Peter and I were married in the village church. On the map that decorated every restaurant tablecloth, I would trace the rough triangle of Lesbos. I knew Mytilene, on the eastern point, for its airport and ferry dock, and ‘our’ village, near the western point. But the island’s other 1,600 or so sq km remained a mystery.

In 2015, Peter and I made our summer trip to Greece just as refugees fleeing war in Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and beyond began arriving on Lesbos’ shores in numbers that made international headlines. Their overcrowded rubber boats were beaching far from our village, on the island’s other coasts, not even 10km from Turkey. I speak Arabic and had visited Syria several times, so I proposed going to help. Peter, afraid he’d be in the way, begged off, but I rented a car and set out. For the first time ever on Lesbos, I sat in the driver’s seat.
The transit camps, where thousands of people were waiting to receive their registration papers from police, had been hastily arranged in places that weren’t marked on the tablecloth maps. I knew only that they were across the island, near Mytilene – and I barely knew how to get there. After five wrong turns in the town of Kalloni, I finally rolled down my window and called out to a man: “Pou einai drómos Mytilene?”. I was surprised to find I knew the words for ‘where is’ and ‘road’, and he answered, ‘50m’ and ‘left’.
This was so far from the Lesbos I knew, a place I’d never thought to imagine
Kara Tepe, the camp designated at the time just for Syrians and Iraqis, was not so much a camp as a large car park. I joined a group of Greeks cooking pasta for lunch, hundreds of servings at a time. My Arabic helped with crowd control, and food prep was done in pantomime. There was enough English to go around, just as, after a second batch of pasta, there was enough food.
Late in the afternoon, I felt savvy enough to drive an Afghan family who had been misdirected to Kara Tepe to Moria, another camp nearby handling migrants from Afghanistan and elsewhere. Though upon arriving, my confidence stalled, as I saw the former military installation’s high walls topped with razor wire. This was so far from the Lesbos I knew, a place I’d never thought to imagine.
A few months later, I went back to the island alone. Since the summer, I had helped build a network of volunteers. From the days I’d worked at the camp and what else I knew of Lesbos, I co-wrote a guide for others who wanted to make the trip. The situation had turned grimmer and more complex, so I had come to strengthen the network, update the guide and support the refugees however I could.

As my ferry from Athens pulled into the port, my project suddenly felt like folly. I knew nothing about this place – I’d driven one road on this island, worked at one camp and peeked at another. Nor did I know what I might encounter here and whether I was capable of handling it. There was only one way to quell my anxiety: move forward.
That week, I crisscrossed the island in my rental car, collecting information and new contacts from the camps, the boat landing spots and other aid points for refugees. Along the way, I marvelled at this new-to-me Lesbos. The brown, summer-sun-baked terrain I was used to was lush and green after the autumn rain. I saw other crystal-blue bays, other stone-paved village squares, and another view out to sea, direct to the coast of Turkey.
I felt each day more capable; each day, the people of Lesbos pushed me on
Every time I hopped out of my car at a new site, I forced myself to say kalimera (good morning) or kalispera (good evening). Without Peter as my safety net, I flung the only greetings I knew like a rope. Greeks grabbed it and pulled me in. They answered my questions about the needs at the camps and told me their stories and why they had come out to help. Many had refugees in their own families, only a few generations back, from the Greco-Turkish War and the ensuing population exchange of 1923, all of which forced more than 1.5 million Christians and Muslims from their homes.
Until then, I had seen the Greek penchant for welcoming foreigners in action only at, say, a beach taverna (a small restaurant). But in this emergency, in service of those fleeing violence and religious and political persecution, it was an altogether more awesome force: fierce and righteous and driven by the island’s history. Working in its glow, I felt each day more capable; each day, the people of Lesbos pushed me on.

The last place I visited on my return trip was Moria camp. Now vastly overcrowded, awash in mud and trimmed in a second layer of razor wire, it was even bleaker than when I’d delivered the Afghan family in summer. I walked around for an hour, handing out maps and information packs, dry socks and chocolate, but the capability I’d felt elsewhere was sapped. My gestures felt small and futile.
Out by my car, a Kurdish family flagged me down and asked me how to get to the port. Months before, I wouldn’t have been able to answer. This time, I knew the bus timetables well enough to say they’d missed the last one, but I could offer them a lift. At the port, I helped them buy ferry tickets and made sure they ate a good meal. As they boarded the boat for the next leg of their long journey, they were smiling for the first time in hours. Playing host, I’d restored their spirits, and mine.

Since then, I’ve been back to Lesbos twice more on my own and visited nearly every corner. The island feels smaller now, the mystery of the tablecloth map solved. But it also feels richer, as the place names now evoke two islands: the hazy Lesbos of my summer holidays, and the vivid Lesbos of the refugee crisis.
Some spots on this new Lesbos are marked by tragedy – Molyvos, where villagers had to tend to the casualties of a shipwreck, and Moria, that chronic dark spot. But I also associate the island with a newfound joy, one that comes from clear purpose and common cause. As one island resident wrote to the volunteer network, “Lesbos now is a great school for all humanity,” and every place I visited stands as a lesson in generosity and compassion.
My solo experiences on Lesbos have been so intense, so separate from my husband and so intimately mine, that when it came time for our usual family trip this past summer, I was apprehensive. Could I return to the routine of sun and sardines and open-air films? Rationally, I knew that my holiday was also a way of helping the island, as its tourism economy had suffered after all the dramatic headlines. But when we set off for ‘our’ village, I still felt as if I was sneaking from one island to another.

A few days into our trip, I sneaked off again, to have tea with a fellow volunteer, an Australian expat who’d lived in Skala Eressos for years. (“Since when do you have friends here?” my brother-in-law asked, bewildered.) It was briefly jarring to see her at ease and not in emergency mode – and then it was comforting to catch up. As we chatted about refugee needs, volunteer dynamics and life in the village, I gradually felt less conflicted. My two experiences of Lesbos were knitting together.
Lesbos now is a great school for all humanity
Everyone on Lesbos, I saw then, has had to redraw their personal maps, to reconcile their previous lives with the current situation, deciding how, when and where to help. And for the Afghan family, the Kurdish family and the hundreds of thousands of others who have passed through or are detained on the island, Lesbos is forever marked on their own life maps.
This island is no longer just my husband’s place. It also belongs to me, and to everyone who has ever reached its shores.

BEAUTIFUL PUBLIC TOILET IN NORWAY

Norway’s newest landmark is a place of absurd beauty. The redesigned rest area, situated along a section of the Norwegian Scenic Route, overlooks stunning views of the fjords and the open sea, and is a popular spot for visitors and locals to watch the northern lights in winter and the midnight sun in summer.
Now this picturesque place is quickly gaining a stranger kind of fame, for being home to what may be the most beautiful public toilet the world over.
As part of a project to enhance Norway’s scenic highways with innovative architecture, a sleek viewing area with marble benches and amphitheater steps leading down to the water were built along the roadside. And next to them, a striking, wave-shaped public restroom.
Made of frosted glass and concrete, in quintessential minimalist design, the structure seems to glow in the dark as the glass is lit at night. In the daytime, the facility offers just about the most breathtaking view you could hope to enjoy while relieving yourself.
The rest area gets its name from the World War II memorial located at the site. The monument commemorates the Norwegian “Uredd” submarine (meaning “fearless”) that sank during the war, causing 42 soldiers to lose their lives.

The world faces a future of floods, famine, and extreme heat — here's how we survive

saving our world 4x3Business Insider
The warnings were plentiful. The limits were clearly defined.
We have long understood how to keep the Earth's average temperature from reaching dangerous levels. But as greenhouse gases in the atmosphere continue to trap more heat, we're now face-to-face with the volatile climate, intense heat waves, and large-scale storms scientists predicted decades ago.
Substantial damage is already locked in, even if emissions — the cause of the problem — are quickly cut. The question is no longer whether we can prevent a climate crisis. It's: Now what
Scientists, planners, engineers, and entrepreneurs are developing solutions and adaptations to address this new reality. But surviving in an inevitably harsher environment will require fundamental changes to the way we eat, live, build, and power the world.
Business Insider reporters have spent months reporting on the changes we need to make and the people trying to make them for a series titled 'Saving Our World.' You can see the full series here.

Bangladesh is one of the most vulnerable countries in the world when it comes to flooding, storms, and impact from sea level rise.
In 2016, Bangladesh experienced four cyclones— a record number in the country's recent history. And by 2050, sea level rise could inundate 17% of its land and displace up to 18 million people in Bangladesh, according to Atiq Rahman, the nation's leading climate scientist.
Extreme weather events already flood many homes, schools, and commercial buildings every year.
An Amsterdam-based architecture firm called Waterstudio has come up with one possible solution: floating structures that can withstand storms.
Waterstudio will deliver five of these structures, called City Apps, in Dhaka, Bangladesh in late November.
Check out the project below.

Waterstudio will soon premiere five City Apps in Korail, a low-income community in Dhaka, Bangladesh. They are portable and can move to different neighborhoods.

coral 2
Some of the corals here are already bleaching, losing their color, which is a sign that they're being stressed by heat or acidity.
The Ocean Agency/XL Catlin Seaview Survey/Richard Vevers
  • Since 2016, coral bleaching events have killed off approximately half of the Great Barrier Reef, the largest and most extensive reef system in the world.
  • The heat and acidity devastating the Great Barrier Reef are killing other corals around the globe.
  • Without coral reefs, there could be a rippling ecosystem collapse in the oceans, with devastating effects on the planet.

For coral reefs around the world, time is running out. That bad news for reefs is also bad news for the rest of the ocean and for humanity, since we depend on the planet's seas.
One-third of the 3,863 reefs that make up the Great Barrier Reef — the largest, most extensive reef system in the world — went through a catastrophic die-off after a searing heat wave in 2016, according to a study newly published in the journal Nature. A bleaching event in 2017 devastated even more of that reef, and the cumulative effects have killed an estimated half of the magnificent system in just two years.
The same devastation is hitting reefs around the world .According to some estimates, similar conditions around the globe have killed off about half the world's coral reefs in the past 30 years.
The Great Barrier Reef corals were vulnerable because they've been subjected to warming oceans that are rapidly becoming more acidic. Those changes have been driven by human-caused greenhouse gas emissions, which are warming the world and causing Earth's climate to change faster than reefs can keep up.

A healthy ocean depends on reefs

Reefs are stunning psychedelic wonderlands that snorkelers and divers love to explore — they're full of colorful shapes, swaying and branching creatures, and more. Reefs provide jobs for people in fishing and tourism industries, and they also protect coastal areas from surging seas.
But perhaps more importantly, 25% of fish species spend some part of their life cycle in reefs, despite the fact that they cover less than 1% of the ocean floor
Losing such an essential part of the ocean environment could therefore have rippling effects that cause much broader collapse.
As Michael Crosby, a marine scientist and the president of Mote Laboratory and Aquarium, told Business Insider for a recent feature on reef restoration, loss of reefs could have potentially terrifying consequences.
"You like to breathe?" Crosby asked. "Estimates are that up to 80% of the oxygen you are breathing in right now comes from the ocean. It doesn't come from the land. In order for you to continue to breathe, you have to have a healthy ocean."

How reefs end

The reason reefs are dying is human activity.
In some places, overfishing has wiped out healthy food chains, allowing algae and parasites to overwhelm corals. At other sites, boats dragging anchors and nets — or just scraping along the sea floor — have damaged or destroyed reefs. Pollution from agriculture and runoff from cities can cause disease and kill these creatures as well.
But most importantly, the burning of fossil fuels has warmed the planet. And Earth's oceans have absorbed the majority of that heat, about 90% of it so far.
As waters rapidly warm, corals lose the components that give them color and help them produce food, a process called bleaching. That slows their growth and makes them vulnerable to algae, disease, and death. Increased ocean acidification caused by the absorption of carbon dioxide causes bleaching, too.
It's these bleaching events that have rapidly wiped out so much of the Great Barrier Reef. The same conditions can be seen in the Caribbean and other sites around the world.
At present rates, it's expected that by 2030, 60% of all coral reefs are expected to be highly or critically threatened, and 98% of reefs will be exposed to potentially fatal conditions every year.
It's possible that coral reefs around the world could be mostly wiped out by 2050 or soon after.
As the authors wrote in the recent Great Barrier Reef study, these processes are likely to continue — and they'll totally transform ocean ecosystems.
"The most likely scenario, therefore, is that coral reefs throughout the tropics will continue to degrade over the current century until climate change stabilizes, allowing remnant populations to reorganize into novel, heat-tolerant reef assemblages," the authors wrote.
In other words, reefs as we know them - and the habitats and greater ecosystems they support — will be gone. What'll remain are areas or corals that happen to be abnormally tolerant of heat or acid. But coral reefs overall won't be the same and whatever does survive likely won't be able to make up for the lost functions.

A last ditch effort to save reefs?

Around the world, scientists are trying to come up with ways to save reefs.
Efforts include identifying coral that's particularly resilient to heat or acidity, and pioneering ways to quickly regrow coral so that dying reefs can be re-populated.
Coral 2x1Courtesy Mote Marine Laboratory
Scientists involved in this work have achieved impressive results: in some cases they've recreating coral organisms that originally took a century or two to grow in just a few years.
Other researchers are looking at ways to breed super-corals. On the Great Barrier Reef, researchers have been able to replant coral larvae in some sections after collecting eggs and sperm.
But as demonstrated by the massive die-offs at the largest reef system in the planet, these sorts of efforts won't be enough to save the world's reefs without dealing with the larger carbon emissions problem. Individual efforts can't keep up when 50% of the world's biggest reef system dies in just a couple of years.
As the researchers wrote in their new paper, the important question is when climate change could stabilize. If humans make that happen soon, more reef systems will be able to be preserved. Then — using these sorts of regrowing techniques — they could eventually be restored to some degree.
But if climate change isn't stabilized soon, the authors wrote, "[t]he large-scale loss of functionally diverse corals is a harbinger of further radical shifts in the condition and dynamics of all ecosystems, reinforcing the need for risk assessment of ecosystem collapse."
In other words, if we don't deal with the problem soon, we should think about what widespread ocean ecosystem collapse will look like and mean for humanity.
In that type of scenario, cities will lose their protection against big storm surges, fishing and tourism industries could be eliminated, and the ocean may become largely lifeless or at least extremely transformed.
As Crosby said, the consequences from that bleak transformation could be more severe than most of us can imagine.

April 21st: On this Day
1958, US country music singer Marvin Rainwater was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Whole Lotta Woman'. Rainwater was a full-blooded Cherokee Indian, known for wearing Native American-themed outfits on stage.
1962, Elvis Presley  started a two week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Good Luck Charm', his fifth US No.1 of the 60s. Also an UK No.1 hit.
1967, Working at Abbey Road studios in London, The Beatles completed the sessions for Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. The final recordings were a short section of gibberish and noise which would follow 'A Day in the Life', in the run-out groove. They recorded assorted noises and voices, which engineer Geoff Emerick then cut-up and randomly re-assembled and edits backwards. At John Lennon's suggestion, they also added a high-pitch 15 kilocycle whistle audible only by dogs. These were omitted from the American version of the album.
1969, Janis Joplin  appeared at The Royal Albert Hall, London, (her first London appearance). The opening act was Yes.
1970, Tyrannosaurus Rex, Spooky Tooth, Jackie Lomax, Elton John (making his solo concert debut) and Heavy Jelly all appeared at The Roundhouse, London, tickets cost 25 shillings.

1976, Women Against Violence Against Women called for a boycott of all Warner Communications albums because of the promotional campaign for The Rolling Stones' new album Black and Blue. 1978, UK folk singer Sandy Denny died aged 31. While on holiday with her parents in Cornwall, England, Denny was injured in a fall down a staircase. A month after the fall she collapsed at a friend's home; four days later she died in Hospital, her death was ruled to be the result of a traumatic mid-brain hemorrhage. She was a member of Fairport Convention and a solo artist. Her 1967 song 'Who Knows Where the Time Goes', was covered by Judy Collins. Denny sang on the Led Zeppelin track 'Battle Of Evermore' on the bands fourth album, (the only guest vocalist on a Led Zeppelin album).

1990, Sinead O'Connor started a four week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with her version of the Prince song 'Nothing Compares To You'. The track was also a No.1 hit in 18 other countries. The video was shot in Paris, and consists almost solely of a close-up on O'Connor's face as she sings the lyrics. Towards the end of the video, two tears roll down her face. The clip won Best Video at the 1990 MTVVideo Music Awards - the first video by a female artist to win in this category.

I never thought I'd hire a wedding planner, but it was the best decision I made

wedding
Having a wedding planner can relieve the stress of planning and help you make the most of your wedding day.

  • Wedding planning can be stressful — no matter how organized you or your family may be.
  • wedding planner can help you meet deadlines, make informed decisions, and ensure your wedding day is as special as possible.
  • I have no regrets about paying extra for a wedding planner — here's why.

My husband and I weren't looking for a luxurious wedding. We had generous contributions from both sets of parents, but we wanted to spend our money on tangibles that our guests would enjoy: food, beverages, and a venue with a great dance floor. The idea of hiring a wedding planner seemed crazy.
I'd always thought of a wedding planner as a tool for the wealthy bridezilla. It wasn't until after a week or so of scouring wedding forums that I had a change of heart. One thing that everyone on the internet seemed to agree on was that not only were wedding planners an invaluable part of the wedding experience, but they were also more affordable than I'd anticipated.
So I went ahead and hired a wedding planner for our wedding, and it was one of the best decisions I've ever made. Here's why you should consider it, too.

What our wedding planner handled

There are multiple tiers to wedding planning, from full-on planning to day-of logistics. We only hired a day-of planner, and our package included the following:
  • Three one-hour planning meetings
  • Six hours of services the day before
  • 16 hours the day of
  • Two planners on-site for the rehearsal and wedding
Starting about 10 months before the wedding, our planners kept us on track with a list of goals to meet each month. We knew when we needed to send out save the dates cards, finalize vendor contracts, and book honeymoon flights. They took care of everything, ranging from the important issues to the smallest of details.
As the big day grew closer, my partner and I realized that we had a potential problem: Our beloved beagle would be stuck at the kennel during the hours of our pre-ceremony photos. It was really important to us to have her present for our wedding, but all of our friends and family were unable to pick her up, as they'd be at venue with us.
Our planners saved the day by arranging for a friend of theirs pick up our dog from the kennel and drop her off at the venue. Then, someone else came to pick her up after the photos were done. Every time I see a wedding picture of us with our sweet pup, I remember how amazing it was to have her there.
Our wedding rehearsal ran smoothly due to the careful planning and foresight of our wedding planners. They ran minor errands that relieved us of stress, such as picking up the flowers for our centerpieces and arranging them on the tables. They told us exactly where to stand and when to enter and exit during the ceremony. Our officiant couldn't make it to the rehearsal, so they filled him in before the wedding.
The planners also ensured that my wedding day was as stress-free as possible. On the day of the wedding, a few guests were locked out before the ceremony because our venue had a gate with a special access code. The planners went down there and relayed the code to those who were stuck outside. Without them, some guests would have missed the ceremony entirely.

Why I have no regrets about paying extra for a planner

No matter how organized you, your family, or your bridesmaids are, you'll never be able to stay on top of everything the way a wedding planner can. After all, they're professionals! I was amazed at all of the little tasks they assisted with, like helping my bridesmaids steam their dresses or packing up all the cards and gifts at the end of the night.
Though these details seem trivial, without our planners, the burden would have fallen on my mother or mother-in-law. Instead, everyone got to relax and enjoy the evening.
I was lucky. Our planners only cost $650, though I know they have since raised their rates significantly since our 2015 wedding. According to Angie's List, the average cost of a day-of planner is $1,500, and a full-service planner costs more than $5,000.
I regret certain aspects about our wedding, such as not having enough pie for our guests, but I've never regretted hiring a wedding planner.

These half-million-dollar floating villas can withstand Category 4 hurricanes

Saving our world peels banner

Much of the Netherlands sits below sea level. Rotterdam is at almost the lowest point in the country, around 20 feet below sea level
Living in these spots can put homes at risk for storm surge and flooding, especially during hurricanes. European hurricanes are rare, but some climate scientists expect that storms could become more common in Europe if global warming continues to accelerate.
A new type of floating villa could withstand future storms and rising sea levels. Designed by architecture firm Waterstudio, nine villas will be complete later this month in Zeewolde, a town in central Netherlands about 65 miles from Rotterdam.
Waterstudio CEO Koen Olthuis told Business Insider that the homes can withstand winds of up to 156 mph, classified as a Category 4 hurricane. Each home is buoyed so that when water levels rise during a storm, it can bob with the water.
Check out renderings of the villas below.

The nine villas will range in price from $471,550 to $530,600, depending on the amenities. Construction began in June.

Olthuis calls these homes "amphibious," meaning they touch both the land and the water. Their concrete foundations are buoyed to cables that attach to the ocean floor. If sea levels rise, so do the homes — similar to boats.

Waterstudio is known for its floating structures, which it has exclusively built for over a decade. In November, the firm debuted this design for a solar-powered floating home that will go on sale next summer.

In Dubai, Waterstudio expects to also complete 33 villas on floating islands by the end of 2018, Olthuis said.

Olthuis believes that as cities begin to seriously grapple with the effects of climate change, floating neighborhoods will become more mainstream.

“It’s not about technology — It’s about re-thinking cities. We should start building for change," he said. "Most cities, like Miami, Tokyo, and New York City see water is a threat. We see it as an asset."

Uredd Rest Area (Ureddplassen)

Norway has built what may be the world's

most

 beautiful public toilet.

Prince Dies

2016
Prince dies at age 57 after overdosing on fentanyl, a highly addictive opioid.

Prince played his last concert on April 14 in Atlanta, closing the show with "Purple Rain." The next morning, his plane made an emergency landing in Moline, Illinois, when he lost consciousness. He was taken to a local hospital and given Narcan - his representatives said he was feeling the effects of the flu and also dehydrated.

Dr. Howard Kornfeld, an opioid addiction specialist from California, was summoned to treat Prince on April 20. He couldn't go right away, so he sent his son, Andrew Kornfeld, to start the treatment. When Andrew Kornfeld arrives at the Paisley Park compound where Prince lives in Chanhassen, Minnesota, he and two members of Prince's staff find him dead in an elevator. Kornfeld calls 911; paramedics arrive a short time later, but Prince had passed away hours earlier.

News of his death spreads fast. At first it seems like a hoax, but it gradually becomes clear that Prince has made his transition to the afterworld, just months after the passing of David Bowie. Tributes pour in, his music saturates the airwaves, and his albums re-enter the charts: on the Billboard 200 dated May 7, he holds eight spots, including the top two (The Very Best Of Prince, followed by Purple Rain).

The medical examiner's report is issued on June 2, listing his weight at time of death at 112 pounds (his height is 5'3"). On April 19, 2018, the investigation into his death is closed with no charges filed. That investigation reveals that Prince took a counterfeit Vicodin pill spiked with fentanyl, but could not determine how he obtained it.

ICONIC SHORE
