Fats Domino: Rock and roll legend 

dies aged 89

Fats Domino, one of the most influential rock and roll performers of the 1950s and 60s, has died aged 89.

The American rock and roll artist was best known for his songs Ain't That A Shame and Blueberry Hill.

The New Orleans singer sold more than 65 million records, outselling every 1950s rock and roll act except Elvis Presley. 

His million-selling debut single, The Fat Man, is credited by some as the first ever rock and roll record.

An official from New Orleans coroner's office confirmed the death, which was earlier announced by Domino's daughter to a local television station.

Fats Domino - whose real name was Antoine Domino Jr - was one of the first rhythm and blues artists to gain popularity with a white audience and his music was most prolific in the 1950s.

Domino had 11 US top 10 hits and his music is credited as a key influence on artists during the 1960s and 70s. 

Elvis Presley referred to Fats Domino as "the real king of rock n roll" and Paul McCartney reportedly wrote the Beatles song Lady Madonna in emulation of his style.

In 1986 he was among the first inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but by his later life Domino would no longer leave his Louisiana hometown - not even to accept the award.

New Orleans-born musician and actor Harry Connick Jr is among those who have paid tribute to Domino on Twitter, saying he had "helped pave the way for New Orleans piano players".

Antoine "Fats" Domino Jr was born in New Orleans on 26 Feb 1928, the son of a violinist. His parents were of Creole origin, and French Creole was spoken in the family. 

He was musically inclined from an early age and learned piano from his brother in law, the jazz banjo player, Harrison Verrett.

He was given his nickname by bandleader Bill Diamond for whom he was playing piano in honky-tonks as a teenager. He said the youngster's technique reminded him of two other great piano players, Fats Waller and Fats Pichon.

Domino left school at the age of 14 to work in a bedspring factory by day, and play in bars by night. He was soon accompanying such New Orleans luminaries as Professor Longhair and Amos Milburn.

In the mid-1940s, he joined trumpeter Dave Bartholomew's band, and the two co-wrote Domino's first hit The Fat Man. Suddenly, the New Orleans sound became popular nationwide.

In an interview with the BBC in 1973, Domino spoke about his early life.

He said: "I was 17 when I made my first record in 1949. I never thought about being professional. I used to work in a lumberyard and that's where I first heard a number on a jukebox and I liked it. It was a piano number. It was called 'Swanee River Boogie' by Albert Ammonds."

Despite both musical heavyweights coming from New Orleans, Fats Domino said he only met Louis Armstrong twice in his life.

He told the BBC in a later interview: "I liked the way he was singing 'Blueberry Hill'. See, a lot of people think I wrote 'Blueberry Hill' but I didn't. 

"That number was wrote in 1927 and I recorded that song in 1957. We just put a different background and I just sing it the way it would fit me and it came out great for me."

• Giannis Antetokounmpo has grown into the versatile, unguardable player that many in the NBA world thought he could be.
• Through four games, Antetokounmpo is averaging 36 points, 11 rebounds, and five assists per game, looking like an MVP candidate for the Milwaukee Bucks.
• At 22 years old, Antetokounmpo has not even reached his full potential yet, a scary thought for the rest of the league.

Three years ago, Giannis Antetokounmpo was all long limbs, highlights, and potential.

The 19-year-old "Greek Freak" was a 6-foot-11 forward with no clear-cut best skill or position. A player who was still finding his way on the court in between jaw-dropping highlights, like going the length of the court in four dribbles.

Now, however, at just 22 years old, Antetokounmpo has exploded into the player so many people thought he could be, and he has the potential to keep growing.

Four games into the season, Antetokounmpo is leading the NBA in scoring with 36 points per game on 66% shooting, while stuffing the stat sheet with 11 rebounds, five assists, and nearly three steals per game for the 3-1 Milwaukee Bucks.

The hot start has immediately vaulted him into the MVP conversation. With so many superstars around the league teaming up, players' counting stats and roles are reduced. Antetokounmpo, meanwhile, is the lone star on a Bucks team that could find itself in the top four in the wide-open East.

And perhaps the most impressive part, as mentioned, is that Antetokounmpo's game is still growing. He remains a shaky jump shooter, unable to stretch the floor to become a complete offensive threat. But because of his ball-handling ability, length, and athleticism, Antetokounmpo has learned how to deal with crowds of defenders to get exactly where he wants around the basket.

And when Antentokounmpo exerts his will on the defensive end, he can become a two-way force.

Anteotkounmpo told Yahoo's Chris Mannix that the game has slowed down for him and he's learning how to do what he wants.

"I kind of know when I can score the ball now," Antetokounmpo said. "In previous years, I was taking the ball and just racing guys. Now I kind of know my spots, where are my sweet spots ... My first few years it was always a turnover. I was always getting offensive fouls because I was running fast, speeding up myself. It’s slowed down a little bit for me."

Antetokounmpo has earned flattering comparisons from head coach Jason Kidd, who has said he could be Magic Johnson and Kevin Garnett, and recently said he has the same intense work ethic of LeBron James and Kobe Bryant. Veteran Bucks guard Jason Terry echoed the sentiment to CBS's Reid Forgrave.

"Each year he's added a new element to his game. He's yet to become a finished product, but you still can say he's one of the top five players in the league," Terry said. He added of Antetokounmpo's chances of becoming a top-three player. "Top three? It's not far-fetched. It's not crazy when you see the work ethic he has, when you understand he's a student of the game who is seven feet and all the physical tools of a guard."

Antetokounmpo's outside shot remains a work in progress, but there are encouraging signs for its development, from an improved fade-away jump shot in the paint, to a 75% average from the free throw line.

The underline to all of this, again, is that Antetokounmpo is just 22, turning 23 in December. The rate at which he's been improving is startling, and he hasn't hit is physical prime yet.

The NBA has never seen a player like Antetokounmpo before, and if he continues developing at this rate, we may soon be asking when someone else will steal the throne of best player in the league from him.

Steve Hafner, CEO of Kayak Software Group, has just bought a new penthouse for $21 million, the Wall Street Journal reported. Kayak Software Group is the parent company of the travel website Kayak. 

Hafner's new penthouse is at the top of L'Atelier in Miami Beach, and it had originally been listed for $33 million in 2015 before being chopped to $25 million in 2016. 

While construction isn't yet complete, renderings show that the penthouse takes up two floors and comes with a 40-foot-long pool. 

Units in L'Atelier start at $3.1 million, and 87% of the units have already been sold.

Tο 1972 ηταν η χρονια της Λαιζα Μιννελλι.Κερδιζει το Οσκαρ ερμηνειας για την εντυπωσιακη εμφανιση της στο"Καμπαρε"και δινει μια συναυλια αποκλειστικα για την τηλεοραση και αποσπα τεσσερα βραβεια Emmy.Αυτη η συναυλια,διαρκειας μιας ωρας,με την επωνυμια  Liza with a Z,ηταν για χρονια χαμενη,αλλα οχι ξεχασμενη, σε ενα κιβωτιο στο σπιτι της τραγουδιστριας.

Το προγραμμα  μετα απο προσπαθειες ενος παραγωγου εγινε πριν μερικα χρονια DVD και θα παρουσιαστει την Δευτερα,13 Νοεμβριου,8 μμ,στο Μεγαρο Μουσικης Θεσσαλονικης(5ος οροφος)στο πλαισιο του εκπαιδευτικου προγραμματος του Συλλογου Φιλων Μουσικης Θεσσαλονικης, με εισηγητη τον δημοσιογραφο Λευτερη Κογκαλιδη και ελευθερη εισοδο για το κοινο.

Η σκηνοθεσια και η χορογραφια ειναι του Bob Fosse ενω η μουσικη και οι στιχοι των John Kander-Fred Ebb.Mεταξυ αλλων ακουγονται Son of a preacher man/I gotcha/Say Liza/Bye bye blackbird/My mammy/Willkommen/Money,money/Maybe this time/Cabaret

Κορη της Τζουντυ Γκαρλαντ και του σκηνοθετη Βινσεντε Μιννελλι η Λαιζα-και οχι Λιζα η Λισα-εμφανιστηκε για πρωτη φορα στον κινηματογραφο σε ηλικια 3 χρονων στην τελευταια σκηνη του μιουζικαλ του 1949 In the good old summertime,διπλα στην μητερα της και τον Βαν Τζονσον.Απο τοτε εμφανιστηκε σε 25 ταινιες κι ειναι απο τους ελαχιστους καλλιτεχνες που εχουν κερδισει Oscar,Emmy,Grammy,Tony.

Χορηγος επικοινωνιας ο ραδιοφωνικος σταθμος του Αθηναικου-Μακεδονικου Πρακτορειου Ειδησεων ΠΡΑΚΤΟΡΕΙΟ  FM 104,9 .
