Leonard Nimoy, Star Trek's Mr Spock, dies at 83
US actor Leonard Nimoy, who played Mr Spock in the cult sci-fi series Star Trek, has died at the age of 83 in Los Angeles, his family has said.
His son, Adam, said he died of end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease on Friday morning.
Nimoy had a long career as both an actor and director.
However he was best known for his portrayal of the half-human, half-Vulcan character in both the TV franchise and series of films.
Last year, the actor revealed he was suffering chronic lung disease COPD, despite stopping smoking 30 years ago.
It was reported earlier this week he had been taken to hospital on 19 February after suffering from chest pains.
He later tweeted: "A life is like a garden. Perfect moments can be had, but not preserved, except in memory."
He signed off what was to be his final tweet with "LLAP" - a reference to his character's famous catchphrase, "Live long and prosper".

The smug, judging record clerk is a sad cliche, but the stereotype exists for a reason. Not all of them start out that way. Sometimes it’s a process of grinding down that takes place over several years. I’ve been working in and around record stores since 1991. Anyone working retail knows dealing with morons and nutjobs comes with the territory, but music retail people will tell you they deal with a completely different breed. There’s something special about a record store that attracts a fringe class one might never encounter any other place, save the emergency room or the DMV. Ask anyone who has worked in music retail, especially the old-timers, and they’ll tell you. We all have a story to tell.
In 2002 I stashed a notebook behind the counter of the shop where I work, something I wish I had had the foresight to think of years earlier. Anytime we got a dopey phone call, boneheaded comment, or generally batshit customer experience we’d log it into the book with the date and time of occurrence. We’ve got a few volumes filled at this point. Earlier today I flipped through some back pages and noted favorite entries. I have omitted the date stamps for the sake of brevity, but these entries span from February 2002 to November 2014. There’s so much more where this came from, but ideally this begins a dialogue with other battle-scarred shop grunts. We want to hear your stories. If you have favorite quotes or tales, especially ones that top these, post them to the comments and share with others who’ve lived the struggle.

OK, this one’s pretty cool.
There’s an elderly couple that shops at the store regularly. The old man is blind and his wife is this sweet old lady that guides him around and reads off the song titles to him on the Big Band CD’s. One day we decided to order a pizza for lunch and there’s three of us at the counter eating our slices. The old woman comes up to my co worker, Rob, and says “that sure does look good.” Rob has the slice right up to his mouth to take a bite out of it when the old lady grabs Rob’s hand and pulls it over to her own mouth, taking a huge chomp out of it—completely out of the blue.
Rob is dumbfounded, just staring and not knowing what to do or say to this old woman that just took a bite of his pizza.
The lady then looks at Rob and says “when you get to be my age you can do anything you want.”

Me: “So what does this one sound like?”
The guy looks at the cover of In The Flat Field, obviously for the first time ever, and sees the distorted nude photograph:
“OH! Bahadu?! He’s like the white PRINCE… ya see, he’s naked. It’s kind of mellow… it’s funky!”

Η ιστορία, έτσι όπως παρουσιάζεται στη δίωρη μουσικοθεατρική παράσταση, αρχίζει στη Σαμοθράκη, ένα χρόνο πριν τη γέννηση του Αλέξανδρου, όπου κατά τη διάρκεια των βακχικών Μυστηρίων συναντήθηκαν για πρώτη φορά η μητέρα του Ολυμπιάς και ο βασιλιάς της Μακεδονίας Φίλιππος και ολοκληρώνεται με το θάνατο του Μεγάλου Αλεξάνδρου στη Βαβυλώνα, 33 χρόνια αργότερα. Ποιος, όμως, ήταν πραγματικά ο άνθρωπος που άλλαξε την ιστορία και επηρέασε τον πολιτισμό εκατομμυρίων ανθρώπων; Πόσα πραγματικά γνωρίζουμε για τη ζωή του;

Article 10

Leonard Nimoy: Obama leads tributes to Star Trek actor
Continue reading the main story
President Obama has led tributes to Leonard Nimoy, the US actor who played Mr Spock in the cult sci-fi series Star Trek, who has died aged 83.
"I loved Spock," said Mr Obama.
Nimoy died in Los Angeles on Friday. His son Adam said he died of end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, which is often caused by smoking.
His career took in acting, directing, writing and photography, but he was best known for portraying the half-human, half-Vulcan character Spock.
Obama said in a statement: "Long before being nerdy was cool, there was Leonard Nimoy.
"Leonard was a lifelong lover of the arts and humanities, a supporter of the sciences, generous with his time and talents.
"And of course, Leonard was Spock. Cool, logical, big-eared and level-headed, the centre of Star Trek's optimistic, inclusive vision of humanity's future."
Obama's approach to politics has been described as Spock-like. He greeted Nimoy with a four fingered Vulcan salute when the pair met in 2007.
Among the torrent of tributes on Twitter was a message from Nasa crediting Nimoy and Star Trek as an inspiration.
Other Star Trek cast members gave their praise too. William Shatner, who as Captain Kirk acted alongside Nimoy for years in Star Trek, said he loved the actor "like a brother".
George Takei, who played Hikaru Sulu said "he was an extraordinarily talented man but he was also a very decent human being."
Zachary Quinto, who played Spock in a Star Trek prequel, said: "My heart is broken."
More than a VulcanNimoy played the Spock in all three of the original series of the programme and later in several big-screen spin offs.
He did have success outside of his Spock costume, in both acting and directing, and he pursued music, painting, and photography.
After the end of Star Trek's initial run, he played master of disguise Paris in the hit adventure series Mission Impossible.
Later he directed two of the Star Trek films, The Search for Spock and The Voyage Home, and in 1987 helmed the hit comedy Three Men and a Baby, one of the highest-grossing films of that year.

Είναι χαρακτηριστικό ότι οι κριτικοί χωρίζουν την ροκ μουσική στην περίοδο πριν και μετά το «The Dark Side of the Moon», όσον αφορά στη χρήση των συνθετητών και των άλλων ηλεκτρονικών «εργαλείων».
Αναφέρεται στη γέννηση ενός παιδιού και το μεγάλωμά του (Speak to Me/Breath), στο χρόνο που φεύγει («Time»), τη θρησκεία («Great Gig in the Sky»), τον καταναλωτισμό («Money»), τον εθνοκεντρισμό («Us and Them») και τον θάνατο («Brain Damage», «Eclipse»).

Οι ταινίες περιλαμβάνουν τα The Motion Picture, The Wrath of Khan, The Search for Spock, The Voyage Home, The Final Frontier, The Undiscovered Country, Generations (όπου τρόπον τινά δινόταν η «σκυτάλη», όσον αφορά στο “lore” του Star Trek, και επίσημα από τον Κερκ στον Ζαν Λικ Πικάρντ), το First Contact, το Nemesis και στη συνέχεια τις δύο μέχρι τώρα ταινίες του «reboot», τα Star Trek και Into Darkness, με ανανεωμένο καστ που συνεχίζει τα ταξίδια του Enterprise.
Το «beam me up Scotty» είναι μια από τις εμβληματικότερες ατάκες που συνδέονται με το Star Trek (αν και η αλήθεια είναι ότι ουδέποτε ειπώθηκε ακριβώς έτσι).
Seven of Nine (Τζέρι Ράιαν)
