Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) was a Dutch post-Impressionist painter whose work, notable for its rough beauty and bold colour, had a far-reaching influence on 20th-century art. Most of his productive years were spent in France. He suffered from bouts of depression and in 1888 he cut off part of his lower ear. He later documented the event in a painting titled "Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear".
