Short bursts of intense exercise 'better for weight loss'
Bursts of high intensity interval training (Hiit) may be more effective for weight loss than longer less intense workouts, a study suggests.
The research, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, analysed results from 36 earlier studies.
Although all the participants lost weight, those doing Hiit saw a 28.5% greater weight loss.
The researchers cautioned that Hiit may not be suitable for everyone.
"Hiit might increase the risk of injury and impose higher cardiovascular stress," they said.
What does the study say?
Researchers from the Federal University of Goias, Brazil, analysed data from 576 men and 522 women of varying levels of fitness.
Interval training was defined as cardiovascular exercise which involved repeated brief bursts of intense effort, interspersed with recovery periods. Cycling, swimming, running and boxing were included.
These workouts were compared with longer continuous moderate intensity workouts, most of which were between 30 and 45 minutes. All participants exercised for at least four weeks.
Those doing interval training lost on average 1.58kg (3.48lb) compared with the 1.13kg (2.49lb) lost by those doing lower intensity workouts.
Sprint interval training seemed to be particularly effective for weight loss, although researchers did caution that the wide variety of training programmes made it difficult to recommend one regime in particular.
The NHS currently recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity, such as cycling or brisk walking, every week.
'Results impressive'
Dr Niels Vollaard, a lecturer in health and exercise science at the University of Stirling, said the results were counterintuitive as most people burned more calories during longer moderate exercise.
"There are two possible explanations," he said.
"Firstly, Hiit may lead to greater energy expenditure after exercise - metabolism may be increased for up to a day following a Hiit session.
"Secondly, after a Hiit session, you may be less hungry.
"In our research, we have shown that appetite hormones are indeed affected.
"It is, however, not easy to study whether energy intake is reduced as a result of this in the longer term when following a Hiit routine, so at the moment we are still unsure exactly what the reason is."
Michael Mosley, who was introduced to Hiit seven years ago while making the BBC Horizon documentary The Truth about Exercise, said: "In 2012, I tested three lots of 20-second high intensity workouts on an exercise bike, three times a week.
"My insulin sensitivity improved by 24%.
"In the programme, we again saw very impressive results with younger, unfit people.
"The biggest problem with exercise is compensatory eating and relaxing afterwards.
"People go on a treadmill for 30 minutes, burn around 120 calories, then lie around and reward themselves with a muffin.
"The theory with Hiit seems to be that it suppresses your appetite and targets the visceral fat in your gut.
"It's not the calories you burn that matter - it's what you do next."

Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom 'get engaged'
Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom appear to have got engaged on Valentine's Day.
The American pop star has posted a photo of herself holding up her hand displaying a rather large ring, with the British actor next to her.
A wall of red, heart-shaped balloons is in the background, and the Instagram caption simply reads: "Full bloom."
Bloom posted the same photo with a single word: "Lifetimes." The A-list couple separated for a while but seem to be preparing to tie the knot.
In a separate message posted on Valentine's Day, the Pirates of the Caribbean star wrote: "A shallow person will only have shallow relationships. Real love is not one person clinging to another, it can only be fostered between two strong people secure in their individuality."
He didn't mention Perry by name but quoted The Little Prince author Antoine de Saint-Exupery: "Love is not two people gazing at each other, but two people looking ahead together in the same direction."

Τι κάνει μια μακαρονάδα ακόμα πιο νόστιμη, χωρίς προσπάθεια;
Ο Scott Conant

@denofgeek.com
@youtube.com

Bob Dylan Finally Lands A #1 Album
1974Planet Waves becomes the first Bob Dylan album to reach #1 in the US.
You would think that Highway 61 Revisited, Blonde on Blonde, or perhaps even The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan would have topped the American albums chart, but it takes Dylan's 14th studio release to give him the elusive chart-topper.
Beloved collaborators The Band back him on the effort. The album reaches the public two weeks later than planned when Dylan decides at the last minute to change the title from Ceremonies of the Horsemen (which fans recall as a lyric from "Love Minus Zero/No Limit" from 1965's Bringing It All Back Home), to Planet Waves.
The cover features Dylan's own artwork, complete with the phrase "Cast-iron songs & torch ballads."
The release enjoys massive media coverage since it is Dylan's first true studio effort in three and a half years. It is preceded by 1973's collection of outtakes Dylan, but that album was almost universally derided by the press, and the artist himself was embarrassed by the effort. Before that came the second installment of Dylan's Greatest Hits and Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid, but that was a movie soundtrack and so not regarded as a true Dylan album.
Planet Waves enjoys a much better reception than his 1970 albums New Morning or Self Portrait did, but few Dylan fans consider it on par with the visionary work he showed in the mid-to-late '60s. This might please Dylan, as he states, "I'm not looking to be that new messiah. That's not in the cards for me. That's all over, that's the past."
"Forever Young" is the standout track, but Dylan nearly pulled the tune off the album after a friend's girlfriend said it sounded like he was getting "mushy."
At a live performance four years later, Dylan introduces a song by saying, "This is off our album called Planet Waves. Sold about four copies."

Prince Harry chartered a private jet home from Norway to make it back in time for Valentine's Day with Meghan Markle
- Prince Harry spent his first Valentine's Day as a married man in northern Norway with the British armed forces.
- Harry, who is Captain General Royal Marines, visited servicemen participating in winter survival training on Thursday.
- The Duke spent some time in a makeshift igloo, which the troops had decorated with a shrine to him and his wife Meghan.
- Within three hours, the prince was back on board his chartered jet and back home in time for Valentine's Day dinner.
Prince Harry spent his first Valentine's Day as a married man in an unlikely location.
The royal was in northern Norway, within the Arctic Circle, visiting British armed forces taking part in winter survival training.
800 Royal Marines are currently stationed in the region undergoing extreme weather training as part of Exercise Clockwork as Britain looks to strengthen its Arctic capability.
As Captain General Royal Marines, Harry is the ceremonial head of the elite commando force.
During his short stay in Bardufoss, the Duke chilled out in an igloo adorned with a shrine to him and his wife Meghan Markle, admitted he misses being an Apache helicopter pilot, and joined the servicemen for lunch in the mess.
Perhaps the image of his wife alone on Valentine's Day was enough to spur him home, though, as within three hours the prince was back on his chartered jet home.
The Daily Mail cites Harry's transport of choice as a Cessna Citation Excel, which among is the best-selling private jets of all time, according to NetJets.
The cabin provides enough room for up to seven passengers.
According to charter service Private Fly, a one-way flight from Farnborough (just outside of London) to Bardufoss in a similar aircraft to the one Harry traveled in would cost €22,428 ($25,200) and take about three hours.
The Mail added that royal travel for official engagements is typically paid for by the taxpayer-funded Sovereign Grant.
Kensington Palace declined to comment on the issue when contacted by INSIDER.
While Harry's engagement to Meghan was famously low-key — the royal proposed during a quiet at their cottage over roast chicken— past evidence would suggest that the actress is a big fan of the most romantic day of the year.
In her now-deleted blog "The Tig," Meghan reportedly wrote about her perfect Valentine's Day.
"Without fail, every February 14th, I wake up feeling like I'm immersed in a Robert Doisneau photo, waiting with bated breath to be dipped into a kiss," she wrote, according to Hello! magazine.
"This is all happening in black and white, of course. And in Paris, if I had my way.
"But delusions of Francophile grandeur aside, Valentine's Day is special wherever you happen to find yourself. And in terms of gifts, be it breakfast in bed, a sweet love note, or a single flower, it really is the thought that counts."
Let's hope Harry read that particular blog post.

Azores Destination Guide
Overview
The Azores is an enchanting region of Portugal that’s made up of nine volcanic islands in the North Atlantic Ocean. Compared to many island destinations, the Azores aren’t touristy, noisy, or polluted. Instead, travelers can expect to discover untouched nature, stunning panoramic views, and charming villages with rich cultural traditions. Here are the key details you should know to begin planning your trip to the Azores.
Peak Season | Population | Language(s) | Currency | January Climate | July Climate |
June to September | 245,746 | Portuguese | Euro | Average high 60.8 °F | Average high 74.5 °F |
Must-See Attractions
Nature lovers will be thrilled to discover all of the outdoor excursions available to them in the Azores. This is a prime spot for hiking, diving, fishing, and whale watching. Some of the top outdoor sights to see include the calderas of Lagoa das Sete Cidades and Lagoa das Furnas and Pico Island, where you can climb the tallest mountain in Portugal. Sao Miguel is the biggest and my populated island, and there are lots of historic homes, restaurants, hotels, and shops here.
If You Have Time
Although Sao Miguel is the most popular place to visit and stay, the other islands of the Azores are certainly worth a visit as well. The most southern island of Santa Maria has great beaches and is accessible from Sao Miguel by ferry. Try to visit the Port of Angra in Terceira, which is a World Heritage Site and in close vicinity to the hundreds of traditional bullfights that are held every summer. Head to the most westerly island of Flores to see the picturesque coast lined with wildflowers and grazing sheep.
Free Things to Do
- Visit the beach to take a dip in the comfortable 70-degree water
- Take the five-hour trek to the peak of volcanic Mount Pico
- Go birdwatching to see some of the Azores 300+ species of birds
- Take a stroll around the 15th century town of Angra do Heroismo to learn about local history
Transportation
Most travelers will arrive to the Azores by plane through the Ponta Delgada Airport, and although each island has its own airport, flights often only depart once daily. The best way to get around the Azores is by car, and there are some really scenic drives to experience here. Buses operate around the islands, but service can be infrequent and unavailable on Sundays and holidays.
Cycling should only be attempted if you are in great shape because the terrain is rugged and steep. It’s especially enjoyable to take boat to get from island to island, since most towns have ports and are along the shoreline.
Recommended Restaurants
There are many dining options available to Azores travelers, depending on their budget. The best cuisine is Portuguese, however, you can find Italian and vegetarian restaurants as well.
Restaurant | Cuisine | Location | Price | Notes |
Saca-Rolhas Taberna | Portuguese | Rua Da Corujeira, No. 3 – Relva, Sao Miguel 9500-657, Portugal | Moderate/Pricey | Restaurant can be difficult to find but the incredible seafood is worth it |
Restaurante Marisqueira Ancoradouro | Portuguese | Rua Joao de Lima Whitton, Areia Larga, Madalena, Pico 9950-302, Portugal | Budget/Moderate | Lovely terrace with beautiful views |
Restaurante Tony’s | Portuguese | Largo do Teatro 5, 9675-036, Furnas, Portugal | Moderate | Fish specialties are the Bacalhoad and Fried Moreira |
Money Saving Tips
- Consider flying SATA International, which connects to four Azores islands
- Explore outdoor sites on your own instead of hiring a guide
- Frequent local bars and restaurants instead of touristy ones
- Check out our homepage to view price comparisons for flights, hotels, and rental cars before you book
- A general tip – increases the chance of finding good cheap hotels in your destination by being flexible with dates and areas. Happy travels!

What you should be eating
for dinner, according to dietitians
- Overeating or eating the wrong foods can lead to trouble sleeping.
- Three registered dietitians shared their specific dinner recommendations.
- A balanced meal consisting of foods you actually enjoy will keep you satiated and less likely to reach for a late-night snack.
When it comes to dinner, overeating or eating too much of the wrong kinds of food can lead to trouble sleeping. On the flip side, a meal that is less than satiating can leave you wanting more and result in reaching for an unhealthy late-night snack even closer to bedtime.
INSIDER consulted with three registered dietitians to get their input on their favorite dinner choices.
An ideal dinner features a balance of vegetables, protein, grains, and healthy fat
Natalie Rizzo, MS, RD, and author of "The No-Brainer Nutrition Guide For Every Runner," told INSIDER that these components "help you stay full and avoid late-night snacking."
"The ideal plate is one-half vegetables, a quarter protein, and a quarter starches, such as grains or starchy vegetables," said Rizzo.
She listed grilled salmon with quinoa and roasted vegetables, and a vegetable bowl with brown rice and tofu as prime examples. Healthy fats can be incorporated by cooking vegetables in extra-virgin olive oil or adding avocado.
Make your one-pot dish a hearty side for your healthier meal
As nice as it is to have fewer dishes to wash, a one-pot dinner can increase your likelihood for reaching for something else later. Kathryn Riner, pediatric dietitian and founder of Healthy Kids Nutrition, encourages people to include more than one food at dinner.
"I know mac and cheese can be a family favorite," said Riner. "[But] instead of having a one-pot meal, perhaps mac and cheese can be a side dish to chicken or salmon with broccoli. Cut up a few apples and serve milk as a drink, and you have a balanced meal the entire family can enjoy."
Other sample meals she recommended are salmon with broccoli and brown rice, and black bean and sweet potato quesadillas made with whole wheat tortillas.
Overall, your dinner should include foods you enjoy and find satisfying
Depriving yourself can lead to overeating, late-night snacking, and mindless eating and it's for this reason that Riner encourages people to indulge in "fun" foods every once in a while.
"In order to avoid late-night snacking and cravings, it is important to include some fun foods (or what one may perceive as off limits) every once in a while," said Riner. "Meaning, if we always order the healthiest thing on the menu but come home and graze on chips, perhaps we really wanted the burger and should have just enjoyed it in the first place."
This dietitian-approved vegetarian meal incorporates protein and complex carbohydrates
Meredith Price, MS, RD, CDN, a vegetarian, typically eats a big side salad (mixed greens, tomatoes, and cucumbers dressed lightly in olive oil and balsamic vinegar), two to three pieces of baked BBQ tofu, and a side of baked sweet potato fries for dinner, with a big glass of water.
"Having a balanced meal like [this] one will reduce cravings because you're giving your body what it needs — a healthy balance of carbohydrates, fats, and protein," said Price.

Εγώ... [...]
