Stones Altamont Concert Turns Violent

1969
The Rolling Stones headline the Altamont concert at a speedway in California. It's a free event with Jefferson Airplane and Santanaalso on the bill, but it turns violent when the Hells Angels motorcycle gang, who are hired as security, kill a crowd member. The concert is documented in The Stones movie Gimme Shelter.
The Stones put on a free concert at Hyde Park in London on July 5, 1969 that went off without incident, with local bikers assisting with security. When they put on their show at Altamont, they make a fateful decision to use members of the American biker gang Hells Angels, which they don't realize are much more violent. They are paid in beer.

The show, originally planned for Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, is moved on short notice when word gets out about the concert, violating terms of the permit, which states that it cannot be announced until 24 hours before the event. The new location is the Altamont Speedway in nearby Tracy, California, out in the desert. Car parts are strewn all over the place from the demolition derbies staged there - an ominous sign.

Santana get through their set, with Carlos Santana pleading for calm in a fruitless effort to invoke Woodstock, which they played four months earlier. When Jefferson Airplane take the stage, the crowd is unruly and the security forces have turned bellicose; Marty Balin jumps into the audience in an unsuccessful attempt to stop a beating, and gets clobbered himself.

The Flying Burrito Brothers go on next, followed by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. The Grateful Dead are scheduled to follow, but they refuse - too much violence and mayhem. By the time Jagger and company go on, it's chaos, but they play anyway. They do a full set, stopping as a skirmishes erupts during the third song, "Sympathy For The Devil," and the seventh, "Under My Thumb." They don't realize that in this second scuffle, an 18-year-old fan named Meredith Hunter is stabbed to death by a biker named Alan Passaro; the body is dragged under one of the Grateful Dead's vehicles.

The brothers David and Albert Maysles film the event, which is released a year later as the documentary Gimme Shelter. In the film, Jagger watches the stabbing of Hunter frame by frame, trying to make sense of it.

Portage Ghost Town

The ruins of a town wiped out by the second-largest earthquake in recorded history.

On Good Friday in 1964, everything was normal in Portage, Alaska, until 5:36 p.m. That’s when the second largest earthquake in recorded history hit.
The 9.2 magnitude earthquake, which had side effects registered in Florida and Texas, lasted four minutes and 38 seconds, but did a devastating amount of damage. The quake raised some areas by as much as 30 feet in elevation and caused many buildings to collapse. The earthquake and the tsunamis it caused killed 139 people in total.
Some of the locations hit were the hamlets of Portage and Girdwood, both southeast of Anchorage. A Portage native described the earthquake as “like riding an open door elevator.” After the aftershocks subsided, all that was left of Portage were ruins and a barren forest. It was decided then that Portage would be abandoned and Girdwood relocated.
Today, the remaining bits of Portage serve as a ghost town; a skeletal reminder of the mining community that once thrived there and the force of nature that destroyed it.

Ήταν 6 Δεκεμβρίου του 1990 όταν έφυγε από τη ζωή ο ρόκερ Παύλος Σιδηρόπουλος. Γεννημένος το 1948 στην Αθήνα, ήταν δισέγγονος του Αλέξη Ζορμπά και ανιψιός της γνωστής ποιήτριας Έλλης Αλεξίου.

Beyonce Channels Etta James In Cadillac Records

The musical biopic Cadillac Recordspremieres in US theaters, with Beyoncéin a starring role as soul legend Etta James.
Cadillac Records is the story of Chess Records, a Chicago-based label started by Leonard Chess (played by Adrien Brody) in 1950 for black musicians, launching the careers of Etta James (Beyoncé), Muddy Waters (Jeffrey Wright), Little Walter (Columbus Short), Howlin' Wolf (Eamonn Walker), and Chuck Berry (Mos Def).

Of course, the real star of a movie about the rise of blues legends is the soundtrack, and Cadillac Records doesn't disappoint. The soundtrack is a mix of original songs and blues covers from the film's cast and guest artists like Solange Knowlesand Nas. Beyoncé sings on five tracks: "Trust In Me,""I'd Rather Go Blind,""Once In A Lifetime,""All I Could Do Was Cry," and - Etta James' signature tune and the album's lead single - "At Last." 

Aside from spending 48 weeks at #1 on the Top Blues Albums chart, the soundtrack is nominated for multiple Grammy Awards, including Best Original Soundtrack Album and Best Original Song Written for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media (for "Once In A Lifetime"). But it's Beyoncé who comes out a winner with Best Traditional R&B Performance for "At Last." 

A month after the film's release, Beyoncé sings her rendition of "At Last" at Barack Obama's inauguration ball while he and wife Michelle enjoy their first dance as president and first lady of the United States of America. The moment is famous for another reason: When Etta James gets wind of Beyoncé singing "her song" for the Obamas, she lashes out against the singer: "I can't stand Beyoncé. She has no business up there, singing up there on a big ol' president day, gonna be singing my song that I've been singing forever."

Ψάχνετε για το άστρο των Χριστουγέννων;

Σε μια μαγική βραδιά στο ΝΟΗΣΙΣ θα παρατηρήσουμε τα αστέρια,
θα μετρήσουμε το χρόνο που όλο περνά και ποτέ δεν τελειώνει,
θα φτιάξουμε τα στολίδια μας για τα Χριστούγεννα που έρχονται.
Σάββατο 15 προς Κυριακή 16 Δεκεμβρίου 2018, «Μια μαγική βραδιά στο ΝΟΗΣΙΣ»
Το πρόγραμμα διαρκεί από τις 19:00 του Σαββάτου 15/12 μέχρι το πρωί της Κυριακής 16/12 στις 10:00. Ξεκινάμε με μια προβολή στο Πλανητάριο. Στη συνέχεια θα παρατηρήσουμε στον έναστρο ουρανό αστερισμούς, πλανήτες και τη Σελήνη με ένα τηλεσκόπιο αστροπαρατήρησης. Ακολουθούν δημιουργικά εργαστήρια με χριστουγεννιάτικες και πρωτοχρονιάτικες κατασκευές σχετικά με τους αστερισμούς, το χρόνο, τα Χριστούγεννα. Αργότερα, το δείπνο των παιδιών με λιχουδιές που θα παρασκευάσουν τα ίδια. Τέλος, κάπου στα μεσάνυχτα, φτάνει η ώρα για ύπνο με τη συντροφιά της προβολής μιας ψυχαγωγικής ταινίας στο χώρο που θα κοιμηθούμε. Το πρωί, μετά το πρωινό μας γεύμα, ακολουθεί ένας δεύτερος κύκλος δημιουργικών εργαστηρίων με κατασκευή χριστουγεννιάτικων στολιδιών από πηλό και χαρτικά υλικά.

Η μεγαλύτερη όλων των εποχών η 11η ZOOTECHNIA 
από την 31ηΙανουαρίου έως τις 3 Φεβρουαρίου

Δύο επιπλέον περίπτερα
σε σχέση με την προηγούμενη διοργάνωση

Μεγαλύτερη από ποτέ αναμένεται να είναι η 11ηΔιεθνής Έκθεση για την Κτηνοτροφία και την Πτηνοτροφία ZOOTECHNIA, που διοργανώνεται από την 31ηΙανουαρίου έως τις 3 Φεβρουαρίου του 2019 στο Διεθνές Εκθεσιακό Κέντρο Θεσσαλονίκης. Είναι ενδεικτικό πως η αυξημένη ζήτηση για την έκθεση οδήγησε στην αξιοποίηση δύο ακόμα περιπτέρων σε σχέση με την προηγούμενη διοργάνωση, με αιχμή τις ζωοτροφές και τον μηχανολογικό εξοπλισμό.  

Η 11η ZOOTECHNIA θα αποτέλεσει το επίκεντρο όλων των τελευταίων εξελίξεων του κλάδου της κτηνοτροφίας-πτηνοτροφίας στην Ελλάδα, τα Βαλκάνια και τη Νοτιοανατολική Ευρώπη. Μάλιστα, leader επιχειρήσεις του κλάδου από την Ελλάδα και το εξωτερικό έχουν ήδη κλείσει την παρουσία τους στη διοργάνωση, ενώ μεγάλο είναι και το ενδιαφέρον εμπορικών επισκεπτών από όλη τη χώρα και άλλα κράτη της ευρύτερης περιοχής.

Στο πλαίσιο της ZOOTECHNIA θα διοργανωθεί το καθιερωμένο πλέον Pet Festival, ενώ θα φιλοξενηθεί και το «Σαλόνι Αλόγου». 

H ZOOTECHNIA πλαισιώνεται και από ένα πλούσιο πρόγραμμα παράλληλων εκδηλώσεων. Σε αυτές περιλαμβάνεται η εκδήλωση που συνδιοργανώνουν η ΔΕΘ-Helexpo και το Εργαστήριο Ζωοτεχνίας του Τμήματος Κτηνιατρικής του ΑΠΘ, στην οποία θα παρουσιαστούν οι πιο επίκαιρες καινοτομίες στην κατασκευή των σταβλικών εγκαταστάσεων, τη διατροφή των ζώων και την χρήση νέων τεχνολογιών στη διαχείριση των κτηνοτροφικών εκμεταλλεύσεων, μέσω επιδεικτικών παραδειγμάτων σε συνεργασία με αντίστοιχες παραγωγικές επιχειρήσεις. Επίσης, από την 1η έως τις 3 Φεβρουαρίου συνδιοργανώνεται στο πλαίσιο της  ZOOTECHNIA από την ΔΕΘ-Helexpo και το περιοδικό Meat News το Πανελλήνιο Συνέδριο «Το κρέας και τα προϊόντα του, από τον σταύλο στο πιάτο».


Τέλος, ένα ακόμα συνέδριο θα φιλοξενηθεί στην 11η ZOOTECHNIA με θέμα «Η εφαρμογή της κυκλικής οικονομίας στη γεωργία και στην κτηνοτροφία», το οποίο θα συνδιοργανωθεί από τη ΔΕΘ-Helexpo και την Success Consulting & Financing.

Το Μακεδονικό Μουσείο Σύγχρονης Τέχνης διοργανώνει το INSPIRE PROJECT 2018 / CHRISTOPHER MAKOS: FACE THE STRANGE.  
Το INSPIRE PROJECT είναι η δεύτερη διοργάνωση του προηγούμενου Inspire - Εικαστικού Φεστιβάλ Τεχνών Θεσσαλονίκης, το οποίο διοργανώθηκε για τρία συναπτά έτη (2012-2014) από το Μακεδονικό Μουσείο Σύγχρονης Τέχνης. Η διοργάνωση του φεστιβάλ υπήρξε ένα εκτεταμένο εργαστήριο για εκατοντάδες νέους καλλιτέχνες, με επικεφαλής διακεκριμένους καλλιτέχνες από την Ευρώπη. 
Το INSPIRE PROJECT 2018 θα απευθυνθεί και φέτος σε νέους καλλιτέχνες και κοινό, προκειμένου να προωθήσει τον τρόπο παραγωγής έργων μέσα σε συνθήκες ανοιχτού εργαστηρίου.
Ο Christopher Makos (γεν. 1948, Η.Π.Α.)είναι ο προσκεκλημένος καλλιτέχνης της φετινής διοργάνωσης, ο οποίος θα «εμπνεύσει» το εργαστήριο και θα καθοδηγήσει την παραγωγική διαδικασία. Η παρουσία του θα μας δώσει την ευκαιρία να γνωρίσουμε τον τρόπο εργασίας ενός διεθνούς καλλιτέχνη και τη δυνατότητα να εκθέσει το έργο του μαζί με τα νέα έργα που πρόκειται να δημιουργηθούν στη Θεσσαλονίκη.
Το καλλιτεχνικό εργαστήριο για 20 νέους καλλιτέχνες θα διεξαχθεί από τις 30 Νοεμβρίου 2018 έως τις 6 Δεκεμβρίου 2018. Οι εκθέσεις με τα καλλιτεχνικά έργα των εργαστηρίων και των έργων του C. Makos θα εγκαινιαστούν αμέσως μετά την ολοκλήρωση του εργαστηρίου στο Μακεδονικό Μουσείο Σύγχρονης Τέχνης (Εγνατία 154, Θεσσαλονίκη 54636), το Σάββατο, 8 Δεκεμβρίου 2018, ώρα 12:30.
Ο προσκεκλημένος καλλιτέχνης, Christopher Makos,γεννήθηκε στο Lowell της Μασαχουσέτης, μεγάλωσε στην Καλιφόρνια και μετακόμισε στη Νέα Υόρκη μετά το γυμνάσιο. Σπούδασε αρχιτεκτονική στο Παρίσι και εργάστηκε για λίγο ως μαθητευόμενος του Man Ray. O Andy Warhol, στενός φίλος του Μakos και συχνό θέμα των πορτρέτων του, τον χαρακτήριζε ως τον "πιο σύγχρονο φωτογράφο στην Αμερική". Ο Μakos, μαζί με τον Paul Solberg, είναι το καλλιτεχνικό δίδυμο Hilton Brothers, και δείγμα της κοινής τους εργασίας επίσης θα παρουσιαστεί στους χώρους του Μουσείου.

FACE THE STRANGE:ο υπότιτλος του Inspire Project 2018 αναφέρεται στους στίχους του τραγουδιού "Changes"του David Bowie και επικεντρώνεται στην ικανότητα των καλλιτεχνών να διεμβολίζουν την πραγματικότητα και μαζί και τη σύγχρονη οπτική και πολιτισμική κουλτούρα. Αναγνωρίζοντας τις πολλαπλές προοπτικές της «ματιάς», αλλά και της στάσης των σύγχρονων καλλιτεχνών, το Inspire Project 2018 θα εξερευνήσει τους διαφορετικούς τρόπους καλλιτεχνικής παραγωγής, καθώς και τις πολλές όψεις του διαφορετικού, του «παράξενου», του «αλλόκοτου», του «ανοίκειου», και της ίδιας της δυνατότητας της αλλαγής, απελευθερώνοντας την τέχνη από οποιαδήποτε κατηγοριοποίηση.
Η έκθεση έργων του Christopher Makos βασίζεται στην ιδέα και την ατμόσφαιρα της Νέας Υόρκης ως επίκεντρο των καλλιτεχνών, της μουσικής, της μόδας και δημιουργικό κέντρο του κόσμου κατά τη διάρκεια της δεκαετίας του 1970 και του 1980. Μέρος της σειράς ”Altered Images” παρουσιάζει τη δημιουργική σχέση μεταξύ του Makos και του Andy Warhol, ενώ πορτρέτα του Keith Haring, του Jean Michel Basquiat και άλλων επίσης αναδεικνύουν προσωπικότητες του ευρύτερου καλλιτεχνικού κόσμου της Νέας Υόρκης σε μια δεδομένη χρονική στιγμή: αυτήν όπου η Νέα Υόρκη είναι ένα εξαιρετικά ζωντανό καλλιτεχνικό κέντρο, όλα τα πολιτισμικά και κοινωνικά ζητήματα βρίσκονται στο επίκεντρο συζητήσεων και διαπραγματεύσεων, αλλά και όπου ο Αλέξανδρος Ιόλας είναι ένας ακόμη συνδετικός κρίκος των καλλιτεχνών και προσωπικοτήτων της εποχής.

  • Dietitians shared with INSIDER which foods you should go for if you are trying to cut down on the calories.
  • These low-calorie foods will keep you full and satisfied.
Finding low-calorie foods that are filling can be somewhat challenging, as you may find yourself a bit hungry after munching on all those flavorless snack packs which claim to be under 100 calories or less.
However, selecting satiating foods that are low in calories (and are full of flavor) is more than possible, as expert dietitians suggest that there are plenty of foods available which will fill you up without going over your desired calorie amount. Of course, calories aren't the sole indicator of a healthy food, but it can be a good place to start, and many low-calorie foods have other important benefits.
To bring these fulfilling foods to your radar, we asked some registered dietitians to break down all those low-calorie food options that will fill you up quick. Below are some of the food choices you'll definitely want to write down next time you head for the fridge.

"These nutrient-dense veggies are very low in calories, but are very high in fiber, vitamins, and minerals," explained registered dietitian Emily Cooper, RDN.
Coming in at about 10 calories per cup, Cooper noted it is easy to fill up on a large serving of leafy greens without adding too many calories to your plate.

"Oats are high in protein and fiber that will keep you feeling full," said registered dietitian nutritionist Anne Guillot, DN.
One half-cup (40 grams) serving of dry oats has only 148 calories, 5.5 grams of protein, and 3.8 grams of fiber, she explained.

"Chia seeds contain a high amount of protein and fiber," Guillot told INSIDER. A one-ounce (28 grams) serving of chia seeds provides 137 calories, 4.4 grams of protein, and as much as 10.6 grams of fiber, she said. The soluble fiber in chia seeds are known to keep you feeling full, she added.

"Lentils, beans, or peas can be very filling because of their high protein and fiber content," Guillot said. One cup (200 grams) of cooked lentils provides 15.6 grams of fiber and nearly 18 grams of protein for only 230 calories, she explained.

"Potatoes are a healthy food for losing weight," said registered dietitian Kimberly Gomer, MS, RD, LDN, and director of nutrition at the Pritikin Longevity Center + Spa. Hearty foods such as roasted root vegetables are naturally rich in water, fiber, and nutrients, and are low in calorie density, she suggested.

"Rather than drinking fruit juice or juicing, eat the whole fruit," Gomer explained. These whole foods are not only low in calorie density, but they also tend to make you feel satisfied longer than fruit juices, vegetable juices, or any sugar-sweetened drink, she said.

"Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, brussel sprouts, and cabbage are low in calories and can be very filling due to their high fiber content," said registered dietitian Alena Kharlamenko, MS, RD.

"Eggs are said to help with fullness," said registered dietitian Vanessa Rissetto, RD.
One study even pointed out that people who ate eggs in the morning made better choices throughout the day than those who chose a bagel, she suggested.

"Some Greek yogurt brands have 19 grams of protein which can help keep you full," Rissetto suggested.

"Soups made with broth (not cream-based soups) can be an extremely filling low-calorie option, depending on what they are made with," suggested registered dietitian Summer Yule, MS, RDN. If the soup is packed with lean protein and non-starchy vegetables in a light broth, this can be an easy way to incorporate protein, fiber, and water to get a high-volume and low-calorie meal, she said

"Berries are high in fiber and water but are also low in calories," Yule said. For example, two cups of halved strawberries are under 100 calories, she said.

Η Κεντρική Δημοτική Βιβλιοθήκη Θεσσαλονίκης, με αφορμή τις Άγιες Μέρες των Χριστουγέννων που πλησιάζουν, πρόκειται να διοργανώσει εργαστήριο κατασκευής ντεκουπαζ σε κερί και σαπούνι.
Οι ενδιαφερόμενοι πρέπει να έχουν μαζί τους κερί και σαπούνι με λεία επιφάνεια πινέλα κορδέλες, ριλιεφ η κοντούρ σε χρώμα της επιλογής τους, ψαλίδι. χαρτοπετσέτα η ρυζόχαρτο με παράσταση της επιλογής τους
Τα μαθήματα θα κάνει η Σοφία Παπαδοπούλου, την Δευτέρα 17 Δεκεμβρίου 2018 και ώρες 10:00-12:00 π.μ., στον 2ο όροφο της Κεντρικής Βιβλιοθήκης .
Δηλώσεις συμμετοχής από τις 08:00 π.μ. της Δευτέρας 10 Δεκεμβρίου 2018 στο k.vogdanos@thessaloniki.gr (μέχρι 15 άτομα).

Νέο δρομολόγιο από την Θεσσαλονίκη προς την Κρακοβία, με συχνότητα 2 πτήσεων εβδομαδιαίως από τον Απρίλιο του 2019, ανακοίνωσε σήμερα η Ryanair.
Συγκεκριμένα, η αεροπορική εταιρεία επεκτείνει ακόμα περισσότερο το καλοκαιρινό της πρόγραμμα για το 2019, το οποίο πλέον περιλαμβάνει 32 δρομολόγια στο σύνολο για τη Θεσσαλονίκη, με 6 νέα δρομολόγια προς το Τελ Αβίβ, το Δουβλίνο, την Μάλτα, το Μάντσεστερ και τη Λαπεενράντα.
Για να το γιορτάσει, η Ryanair προσφέρει θέσεις από μόνο 14.99€ από την Θεσσαλονίκη, για ταξίδι από τώρα έως και τον Ιανουάριο του 2019, διαθέσιμες μόνο στην Ryanair.com, με κράτηση έως και τα μεσάνυχτα του Σαββάτου (8 Δεκ).

   1997: στη Νέα Ζηλανδία, ορκίζεται η πρώτη γυναίκα πρωθυπουργός, η Τζένι Σίπλεϊ. 

   1999: ο Ολυμπιακός κερδίζει την Γιουβέντους με 2-1 στο Παλέρμο για το Κύπελλο UEFA αλλά αποκλείεται από την συνέχεια της διοργάνωσης έχοντας χάσει με 3-1 στον πρώτο αγώνα στο ΟΑΚΑ. Είναι η πρώτη νίκη ελληνικής ομάδας επί ιταλικού εδάφους από το 1979 όταν ο ’ρης νίκησε την Περούτζια με 3-0. Η πρώτη νίκη, όμως, του Ολυμπιακού στην Ιταλία είχε σημειωθεί στις 27/9/1972 όταν είχε κερδίσει την Κάλιαρι στη Σαρδηνία με 1-0 για το Κύπελλο Κυπελλούχων. 

   2002: το Ιράκ παραδίδει στους επιθεωρητές του ΟΗΕ έκθεση 12.000 περίπου σελίδων για τα οπλικά του συστήματα. Η έκθεση στέλνεται από τη Βαγδάτη στη Βιέννη στην έδρα της Διεθνούς Υπηρεσίας Ατομικής Ενέργειας και στη Νέα Υόρκη. Μέσα σε αυτή η Βαγδάτη υποστηρίζει ότι δεν διαθέτει όπλα μαζικής καταστροφής.

December 7th: On this Day
1963, The Beatles second album 'With The Beatles' started a 21-week run at No.1 on the UK album chart. It replaced their first album 'Please Please me' which had been at the top of the charts since it's release 30 weeks previously. Also today, all four Beatles appeared on BBC TV's 'Juke Box Dury'. Some of the songs The Beatles judged were ‘Kiss Me Quick’ by Elvis Presley, ‘The Hippy Hippy Shake’ by the Swinging Blue Jeans. ‘Did You Have a Happy Birthday’ by Paul Anka and ‘Where Have You Been All My Life’ by Gene Vincent. 
1963, The Singing Nun started a four week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Dominique', it reached No.7 on the UK chart. The song sold over 1.5 million copies in the US, winning a Grammy Award for the year's best Gospel song. 
1964, Beach Boy Brian Wilson married Marilyn Rovell in L.A. The couple divorced in 1979. Marilyn and her sister and cousin were in a group, the Honeys, who were produced by Brian Wilson. Marilyn and Brian had two daughters, Carnie and Wendy, who became members of Wilson Phillips. 
1966,

1967, Otis Redding went into the studio to record '(Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay'.  The song went on to be his biggest hit. Redding didn't see its release; he was killed three days later in a plane crash. Redding wrote the first verse of the song, under the abbreviated title 'Dock of the Bay', on a houseboat at Waldo Point in Sausalito, California a short time after his appearance at The Monterey pop festival. Redding's familiar whistling, heard before the song's fade was the singer fooling around, he had intended to return to the studio at a later date to add words in place of the whistling. 
1967, The Beatles Apple boutique on 94 Baker Street, London, opened its doors. The store closed seven months later when it fell foul of council objections over the psychedelic mural painted on the outside. All the goods from the shop were given away free to passers by and to people who had queued throughout the night for a chance of getting a free item. 
1968, The Beatles White Album started a seven-week run at No.1 on the UK chart. The double set was the first on the Apple label and featured 'Back In The USSR', 'Dear Prudence', and the Harrison song 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps.' 
1974, Barry White was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'You're The First, The Last, My Everything', the singers first UK No.1. Originally written in the 1950s as a country song with the title 'You're My First, You're My Last, My In-Between.' 
1974, Carl Douglas started a two week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Kung Fu Fighting'. The song was recorded in 10 minutes, had started out as a B-side and went on to sell over 10 million. 
1977, Inventor Dr Peter Carl Goldmark was killed in a car crash aged 71. Goldmark invented the long-playing microgroove record in 1945 that went on to revolutionise the way people listened to music. 
1979, The Police had their second UK No.1 single with 'Walking on the Moon', taken from their second album 'Reggatta De Blanc'. The video for the song was filmed at Kennedy Space Center interspersed with NASA footage. 
1985, Mr Mister started a two week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Broken Wings', a UK No.4 hit. 
1991, George Michael and Elton John were at No.1 in the UK with a live version of 'Don't Let The Sun Go down On Me', (a hit for Elton in 1974). All proceeds from the hit went to aids charities. 
1991, U2 went to No.1 on the US album charts with 'Achtung Baby'. Featuring 'One', Zoo Station', 'The Fly' and 'Even Better Than The Real Thing'. 
1992, Mariah Carey's MTV Unplugged EP became the first Sony Minidisc to be released in the US. 
1993, Manic Street Preachers co-manager Phillip Hall died from cancer. Hall was a former Record Mirror journalist and had also worked in PR for Stiff Records. Represented many acts including The Stone Roses, The Pogues, James, The Waterboys, The Beautiful South and Radiohead.
2003, Britney Spears was at No.1 on the US album chart with ‘In The Zone’ the singer's fourth US No.1 album. The singer broke her own record from being the first female artist to have three albums enter the US chart at No.1 to being the first female artist to have 4 albums enter at No.1 consecutively. 
2005, The MBE medal that John Lennon returned to the Queen was found in a royal vault at St James' Palace. Lennon returned his medal in November, 1969 with a letter accompanying saying, "Your Majesty, I am returning my MBE as a protest against Britain's involvement in the Nigeria-Biafra thing, against our support of America in Vietnam and against Cold Turkey slipping down the charts. With Love, John Lennon." Historians were calling for the medal to be put on public display. 
2008, Leona Lewis went to No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘Run’ which became the fastest-selling digital-only track. Take That went to No.1 on the UK album after selling over 432,000 copies of their new album The Circus. Britney Spears album Circus, released on the same day as Take That's album entered the chart at number four. 
2014, Pink Floyd's classic album, The Dark Side Of The Moon made a surprise return to the Billboard chart when it landed at No.13, thanks to ultra-cheap pricing in the Google Play store where the album was discounted to 99-cents. Although it held the No.1 spot in the US for only a week when released in 1973, it remained in the Billboard album chart for 741 weeks. 
2015, David Bowie made his last public appearance when he attended the opening night of the Lazarus production at the New York Theatre Workshop in Manhattan. Tickets to the entire run of the musical (which ran until 20th Jan 2016), sold out within hours of being made available. 
2016, Greg Lake, who fronted both King Crimson and Emerson, Lake and Palmer, died aged 69 after a battle with cancer. One of the founding fathers of progressive rock, the band combined heavy rock riffs with a classical influence. They scored hit albums with Pictures at an Exhibition, Trilogy and Brain Salad Surgery and Lake had his solo hit 'I Believe in Father Christmas'. Jimi Hendrix considered joining ELP in their earliest incarnation, and if this had happened, the band would've been known as HELP. 
2016, An inquest into the deaths of British band Viola Beach after a crash in Sweden heard that "none of the young men suffered". The four-piece group and their manager, who were aged between 19 and 32, died in the early hours of 13 February 2016, following a gig in Stockholm. Their car crashed into a raised section of a bridge and plummeted into a canal.

1942, Born on this day, Harry Chapin, US singer, songwriter, (1974 UK No.34 single 'W.O.L.D. & 1974 US No.1 single 'Cat's In The Cradle'). Killed on 16th July 1981, when a tractor-trailer crashed into the car he was driving. 
1949, Born on this day, Tom Waits, American singer-songwriter, composer, and actor. His songs are best-known through cover versions by other artists: 'Jersey Girl', performed by Bruce Springsteen, 'Ol''55', by The Eagles and 'Downtown Train', by Rod Stewart. 
1954, Born on this day, Mike Nolan, singer with British pop group Bucks Fizz who had the UK hits 'Making Your Mind Up' (1981), 'The Land of Make Believe' (1981) and 'My Camera Never Lies' (1982) and became one of the top-selling groups of the 1980s. 
1958, Born on this day, Tim Butler, bassist with English rock band The Psychedelic Furs. Film director John Hughes used their song 'Pretty in Pink' for his 1986 movie of the same name.
