Here’s what it’s like to fly the world’s longest non-stop route between London and Perth
- The 17-hour nonstop flight between Perth and London launched this weekend.
- It is the world's longest flight.

12pm: Check-in for Qantas flight QF10 to Perth and Melbourne at Heathrow Terminal 3. This is the first ever passenger-carrying flight nonstop to Australia; in 1989 a Boeing 747 made the trip to Sydney, but with no paying passengers on board.
With only 15 minutes remaining before the desk closes, there is no queue.
1pm: Last aboard the Boeing 787 Dreamliner waiting at Gate 1. My original reservation had been for a bulkhead seat, with no one in front, but a week before departure Qantas phoned to say that a mother with a baby and two other children had booked, and therefore I was being moved. I spot a row of three seats with only one chap sitting there, so I move to 44K. Not quite a window seat, because there is no window on that bit of fuselage, but at least it provides a little elbow room with no one in the middle seat. Pushback is one minute early at 1.14pm.
2pm: After a relatively short taxi at Heathrow and minimal queuing, we are over the coast of Belgium.
3pm: Those with windows on the left side can look out at Brno, the second city of the Czech Republic. And I can talk to the Captain, who is walking around the aircraft to meet the passengers. He says the route is finalised only three hours before departure, and the final fuel load decided just an hour ahead.
4pm: Flying over the Romanian capital, Bucharest, at 35,000ft. The dinner service begins. Chicken or beef? Having failed to eat at Heathrow, I have both as the Boeing flies over the southern part of the Black Sea, giving the Crimea a wide berth.
5pm: Landfall over north-east Turkey. A second can of Boag's beer, and very tasty it is, too. Concerning, though, that it had travelled halfway around the world from Tasmania to Heathrow in order to be served on board. Some British beers are really quite good.
6pm: Already in Iranian airspace. Unlike Saudi Arabia, the alcohol ban at ground level does not apply to overflights. So I have a glass of Shiraz to celebrate being very close to the Iranian city of that name.
7pm: Loo and exercise break, which involves an interesting manoeuvre climbing backwards from the unoccupied 44J to avoid disturbing Dave from Canada who is in 44H.
8pm: Talk to Noel Marsh-Giddings from Inflight Video who makes real-time films of flights. This one will last 17 hours and from next weekend should be available on YouTube.
9pm: The halfway point: after 4,500 miles, a journey roughly equivalent to London to Mumbai or Vancouver. As it is 4am in my destination, it's time to try to sleep.
I have never been in a straitjacket, but the most comfortable position for sleeping gave me a clue what it might feel like: feet suspended in a fairly comfortable net hanging from the seat in front, head held firmly in position by a muscular headrest.
10pm: Goa in India is about 200 miles off the port wing. The Maldives are ahead, the last fragments of land before Australia. The track flown is slightly south of the most direct trajectory, which would clip the tip of India and cross Sri Lanka.
11pm: The first in a series of overnight snacks is served to anyone who wants them: carrots and hummus. Two, thanks. The cabin crew, all of whom are based in London, are remarkably friendly and helpful right through the flight.
12am: Twelve hours after arriving at Heathrow. This hour the snack is a Margarita Calzone. Plenty of water is brought around, too, refreshingly poured from jugs rather than in individual plastic bottles.
1am: Crossing the equator. For the only time on the journey, the ride gets a bit bumpy, but not enough for the seat belts sign to go on.
On one of the standard routes to Perth, via Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur, the flight would be landing now. While stretching the legs appeals to some passengers, many others embrace the nonstop flight.
Removing the transit stop eliminates the hassle of an extra security check, and all the queuing, and reduces the chance of disruption: if you don't have a connection, you can't miss it. For passengers with mobility issues (or small children), cutting out the stop is especially beneficial.
2am: Light begins to fill the sky, but little of the dawn infiltrates the cabin due to the deftly darkened windows. Dave from Canada in 44H is snoring as the tireless cabin crew bring round a strange green concoction which is said to be full of vitamins and will enhance my well being.
The flight has now been aloft longer than the previous longest route from the UK: Heathrow to Jakarta on Garuda Indonesia. It will exceed that distance by almost a quarter. Meanwhile, the Indonesian capital provides a useful role as one of the alternate airports to which the 787 could divert if necessary for mechanical or medical reasons.
3am: By now everyone is awake. Breakfast of omelette or fruit salad, plus yoghurt and a muffin. I calculate we are now past the point of no return. From here onwards it's not quite Perth or bust; but if fog closes the city's airport, we could be visiting Learmonth, an air force base 700 miles north.
Anxious flyers may have noticed we are just north of the area of the Indian Ocean where the search for Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 is continuing. Four years ago, the Boeing 777 disappeared on a routine flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 people on board, and was tracked to this lonely patch of ocean. The tragedy remains unsolved.
4am: The sky map is promising touchdown at 5.40am British time. I meet a family who bagged the bulkhead seats, and marvel at the six-month-old baby who has been extraordinarily quiet for the whole journey. With all the breakfast palaver out of the way, the queues for the loos are discouragingly long.
5am: Just 320 miles to go. We are still at 40,000ft, but in the next 40 minutes, that altitude will vanish. Meanwhile, the toothbrush provided shortly after take-off proves invaluable.
The first officer tells us that it is raining in Perth. At 5.10am, the descent begins. It is not as ear-popping as most flights, because the Dreamliner is pressurised to a lower altitude.
6am: After arrival at the gate 15 minutes ahead of schedule, the queue for border control erodes any advantages. I emerge from arrivals to meet two didgeridoo players.
My Australian dollars have cost one-quarter more than on my last visit. And the weather is dismal. I am reminded of an old Australian joke which can now be refreshed.

Amazon, Walmart, and others sell fake products online — here's how to avoid getting duped
- A new report has found that five major online retailers — including Amazon, Walmart, and eBay —were selling fake products that can be harmful to your health.
- Of the 47 products investigators bought, which ranged from Nike Air Jordan shoes to Urban Decay makeup, 20 were counterfeit.
- Looking for a few red flags will help you protect yourself from purchasing a fake product.
Next time you're about to purchase an item from your favorite online retailer, you might want to do a double take.
A recent report from the Government Accountability Office revealed that products purchased from third-party sellers on five major e-commerce sites could be counterfeit — and harmful to your health.
Out of the 47 products — all Nike Air Jordan shoes, Yeti travel mugs, Urban Decay makeup, and UL-certified phone chargers — investigators bought from Amazon, Walmart, eBay, Sears Marketplace, and Newegg, 20 were counterfeit.
All of the shoes were authentic, and only one UL-certified phone charger was fake, but it was a whole different ballpark with the other two categories — six of nine Yeti travel mugs and all Urban Decay makeup were fake.
It's unknown which products came from which retailer, but it is known that one counterfeit item and one authentic item was purchased from each site.
Not only are consumers being duped, they're being exposed to potentially dangerous materials. The report claimed that counterfeit iPhone adapters can pose a risk of lethal electrocution, counterfeit travel mugs can include higher lead concentrations, and counterfeit cosmetics contain substances such as cyanide, mercury, and rat droppings.
Those aren't things you want in your hands or on your face.
What's doubly concerning is that it's hard to discern the difference between what's fake and what's real. The items, all shipped from the US, were advertised as new and name-brand and were sold by third-party sellers with average customer ratings above 90% — all factors that instill a higher sense of confidence and trust in the buyer.
It's also hard identify what's fake knowing that all five companies have strict protocols and a "zero tolerance" policy for counterfeit products that involves removing said goods from their marketplaces, which they confirmed to CBS News.
Yet, somehow the counterfeits persist. Counterfeit goods account for almost 10% of worldwide trade, according to the World Customs Organization.
"I'm not telling anyone to not purchase anything online anymore, that would be unreasonable, but certainly you can look for various things that would help guard you against getting something that's counterfeit," Kimberly Gianopoulos, director in international affairs and trade groups at GAO, told Circa News.

What passengers eat on the world's longest flight from Perth to London

A sparkling organic kombucha drink containing probiotics to aid digestion is just one of the ways Qantas hopes passengers will survive the 17-hour nonstop flight between Perth and London when it kicks off later this month.
Bespoke herbal tea of lemon verbena, chamomile and lemongrass, developed by Dilmah for Qantas, as well as dishes from Rockpool chef Neil Perry featuring leafy greens, fresh fruits and other vegetables that help keep you refreshed are all part of the science behind the new approach.
Perry, the airline’s Creative Director of Food, Beverage & Service, worked with the University of Sydney’s Charles Perkins Centre to develop dishes that encourages sleep at optimal times during the flight.
That means avoiding chilli (it’s a stimulant), the latest craze in superfoods – Hawaiian poke salad bowls, and hot chocolates before bed are all part of the plan.
The menu for economy passengers includes dishes such as marinated beef, citrus, cumin and zucchini salad, and roast chicken with red rice, Mediterranean vegetables, soy beans and thyme jus.
"Working with clinical sleep specialists, nutritionists and metabolic scientists, we’ve designed new menu options using delicious ingredients that have added benefits of hydration, aiding sleep and reducing jetlag," Perry said.
"The menu we are trialing on the Perth to London route will continue to offer a selection of customer favourites but it has some special ingredient additions and exclusions."
Professor Stephen Simpson from the Charles Perkins Centre also plans to conduct research trials with Qantas Frequent Flyers using wearables and apps to collect data on sleeping and activity patterns, mental state, eating patterns and hydration before, during and after their long haul flight.
He said the new menu utilises the latest science on nutrition and hydration.
"Our scientists are excited by this opportunity to discover how the wide variety of influences work together during long haul flights," Simpson said.

Abandoned homes in dramatic landscapes.
One morning last July, the photographer Matt Emmett emerged from his tent next to Rauðasandur Beach and went for a walk. He had just begun a five-day trip through the Westfjords, Iceland’s westernmost region, and while walking along a 6-mile stretch of red sand, he noticed something. “I stopped and realized I was totally alone,” he says. “The only sound was the wind, the cries of arctic terns swooping above my head and the distant breakers crashing against the shore.”
Iceland is one of the most sparsely populated countries in the world. Two-thirds of the entire population lives in Reykjavik; less than 2 percent lives in the Westfjords. Ísafjörður, the largest town in the Westfjords, has a population of about 2,600. It’s a remote area within an isolated island, and seemed, at least initially, an unusual choice for Emmett, who usually specializes in abandoned architecture.
The trip had been arranged by Pentax, for whom Emmett is a brand ambassador. The plan was to test out a new camera by shooting landscapes, alongside another Pentax ambassador, the photographer Bill Ward. But, Emmett recalls, “as the trip neared I noticed in photos online that there appeared to be lots of abandoned houses and farms dotting the landscape.” He contacted a Reykjavik architecture firm that had produced a book on abandoned farmsteads in Iceland, and they helped him locate various ruins.
“The Westfjords suffer from extreme weather during the winter months, and after the global financial crash of 2008, many of the properties have been abandoned,” Emmett says. “These structures are often small and empty but amazingly atmospheric, full of the strange sense of other-worldliness you often find in derelict buildings, but that strange feeling is matched by the landscapes that surround them, so you get a double dose of magic. I was totally in my element.”
Emmett photographed abandoned farmhouses, fishing shacks, and even a beached whaling ship rusting on the shores of Skápadalur Valley. The Westfjords provided a startlingly beautiful backdrop. “The landscape is breathtaking; rugged, vast and empty, a true wilderness that is largely untouched.”
Traveling around such a remote landscape has its own challenges. “The roads tend to hug the coastline and this can make for some interesting journeys,” says Emmett. “You can end up at a point just a mile from where you were several hours beforehand after traveling down a fjord, and then returning along the opposite shore.”
On the same day that he woke up next to Rauðasandur Beach, Emmett visited the Látrabjarg Cliffs. Like the rest of the Westfjords, the sheer scale is breathtaking: the cliffs stretch for more than 8 miles and, in places, tower more than 1,400 feet above the Atlantic Ocean. In a single day, Emmett had walked on a deserted beach and accompanied colonies of puffins on a towering cliff face. “For me,” he says, “it was simply the experience of being in such a wild and isolated place that that I found the most inspiring.”

Situated on Berlin’s Museum Island, the Pergamon Museum houses original, reconstructed monumental buildings such as the Pergamon Altar and the Market Gate of Miletus. Both of these extraordinary artifacts were transported from Turkey, and since its opening in 1930, there has been controversy over the legitimacy of the acquisition of the collection. Many have suggested that the collection be returned to Turkey.
When the Pergamon Museum was severely damaged during an air strike at the end of the Second World War, many objects were stolen. Although many of the major pieces were safely secured, the Red Army collected all of the loose museum items, either as war booty or for safe keeping from the looting and fires that were then raging in Berlin.
In 1958, most of the objects returned to East Germany, but a few significant items of the collection simply remained in Russia. Many of them are now housed in the Pushkin Museum in Moscow and the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg. While Germany is debating whether these artifacts should be returned, Russia currently has no plans to return their items to Turkey, or back to Germany.

There’s an expression in Spanish: Los pimientos de Padrón, unos pican y otros no, which translates to “Peppers from Padrón, some are hot and some are not.” These small green members of the Capsicum genus, measuring about two inches long, make for an exciting, unpredictable dining experience. Think Russian roulette, but with spicy peppers.
You’ll find them served in tapas bars around Spain. Chefs fry the green skin until it blisters, then top with a drizzle of lemon juice and flecks of coarse sea salt. Most of these have a piquant, peppery taste that’s pretty mild, with a slight grassy or nutty finish.
But if you’re lucky—or unlucky depending on your heat tolerance—you may get the one spicy pepper in 10 that can burn as much as biting into a jalapeño.
Legend has it that these unpredictable lime-green peppers made their way from South America to Galicia in northwestern Spain with a group of 16th-century Franciscan monks. They cultivated the seeds on the their monastery grounds in Herbón, near the town of Padrón. Thanks to the cooler environment, high levels of rainfall, and the monks’ selection of particular seeds, the peppers evolved into a strain that’s different from their Latin American ancestors.
So what makes some of these green firecrackers spicy? The heat level apparently increases the longer the peppers stay on the bush, or shows up in peppers that receive more light and water. But there is no way of telling whether a pepper will be hot or not short of actually tasting it.
Need to Know
Although pimientos de padrón are usually served as finger food, you can spice up your pizzas, salads, soups, and rice dishes with these unpredictable peppers. They go really well with cream-based sauces or with aged Spanish cheeses such as manchego. Sometimes they can even be pickled or preserved.

Stephane Audran: French actress
dies at 85
ITV/REX/SHUTTERSTOCKStephane Audran, the French screen star of the 1960s, '70s and '80s, has died at the age of 85.
Audran won a string of awards including a Bafta for best actress in 1974 for two films, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie and Just Before Nightfall.
She played the lead in Babette's Feast, which won the Oscar for best foreign language film in 1988, and was Cara in Brideshead Revisited on British TV.
She was also known for her work with her husband, director Claude Chabrol.
AFPThe pair made 25 films together during their marriage, which lasted from 1964 to 1980.
Many of those films saw her play unfaithful or betrayed wives called Helene.
Their films included Les Biches, for which Audran won best actress at the Berlin Film Festival in 1968.
Another film, Violette Noziere, earned her a Cesar award in France a decade later.

γιατί δεν πρέπει να τρώτε ποτέ το φαγητό του αεροπλάνου;
Διάσημοι σεφ, όπως ο Γκόρντον Ράμσεϊ, έχουν δηλώσει ότι δεν τρώνε ποτέ το φαγητό που σερβίρουν στα αεροπλάνα. Όπως λέει ο ίδιος, σύμφωνα με την Daily Mail, το φαγητό αυτό στην καλύτερη περίπτωση απλά… τρώγεται, ενώ στη χειρότερη είναι απαίσιο, μισό-μαγειρευμένο και βρώμικο.

Η Μύκονος πριν 150 χρόνια…
Ο φωτογράφος Jan Willemsen μπορεί να ξέρει περισσότερα πράγματα για τη Μύκονο από ότι όλοι εμείς μαζί. Την έχει επισκεφτεί πάρα πολλές φορές και την αγαπάει τόσο πολύ που ανέβασε στον προσωπικό του λογαριασμό στο Flickr φωτογραφίες του κοσμοπολίτικου νησιού από το 1885 μέχρι και σήμερα. Πολλές από αυτές τις φωτογραφίες, μάλιστα, είναι τραβηγμένες από τον ίδιο.
Όπως είναι αναμενόμενο, πολλά πράγματα έχουν αλλάξει για τη Μύκονο από το 1885 μέχρι σήμερα. Τότε, ο κόσμος που κυκλοφορούσε στο νησί ήταν πολύ λιγότερος, οι ανεμόμυλοι πολύ περισσότεροι ενώ δεν υπήρχαν beach bar, ξαπλώστρες στις παραλίες και υπερπολυτελείς βίλες.
Σιγά-σιγά η Μύκονος άρχισε να ανακαλύπτεται από τους πρώτους τουρίστες που αγάπησαν την ομορφιά και την ιδιαίτερη αύρα της. Έτσι αρχίζει και αποκτά το νησί περισσότερο κόσμο. Δείτε τις υπέροχες φωτογραφίες και θα την αγαπήσετε ξανά από την αρχή.
Η έντονη κινητικότητα του νησιού ξεκίνησε το 1962 όταν άρχισαν να καταφτάνουν σε αυτό εκατοντάδες τουρίστες. Αυτό που είναι ιδιαίτερα ενδιαφέρον είναι πως εκείνα τα χρόνια, οι λιγοστοί επισκέπτες του νησιού ανήκαν στο διεθνές τζετ-σετ.
Αυτό φυσικά το εκμεταλλεύτηκαν οι παράγοντες της Μυκόνου πράγμα που οδήγησε στην σημερινή φήμη της ως διεθνούς exclusive προορισμού. Μάλιστα, οι έξυπνοι Μυκονιάτες είχαν βρει και τον τρόπο να γίνεται γνωστή η Μύκονος παγκοσμίως: είχαν μονίμως έναν φωτογράφο στο λιμάνι με σκοπό να απαθανατίζουν τους επωνύμους καθώς ερχόντουσαν.
Δεν ήθελε και πολύ να εξελιχθεί η Μύκονος σε ένα από τα πιο δημοφιλή νησιά στον κόσμο. Οι μαγευτικές παραλίες της γέμισαν παπαράτσι που περίμεναν να πετύχουν κάποιον επώνυμο.

Τα τραγούδια που αγαπάμε τα βάζουμε σε λίστες και τα χαρίζουμε στους αγαπημένους μας. Αυτή την εφηβική συνήθεια, τη δική του Playlist, θα μοιραστεί μαζί μας ο Γιώργος Περρής και στο Μέγαρο Μουσικής Θεσσαλονίκης την Παρασκευή 30 Μαρτίου.
Λίγο πριν από την κυκλοφορία του νέου δίσκου του σε διάφορες χώρες, ο διεθνής Έλληνας τραγουδιστής επιστρέφει στη δική του για δύο ξεχωριστές συναυλίες. Με τις αποσκευές του γεμάτες με τραγούδια της δισκογραφίας του, αλλά και αυτά που διαμόρφωσαν την προσωπικότητά του, ο Γιώργος Περρής δημιουργεί μία playlist που ενώνει πολλά διαφορετικά μουσικά χρώματα και γλώσσες. Οι δύο ανοιξιάτικες συναυλίες σε Αθήνα και Θεσσαλονίκη σε συνδυασμό με το αυτοσαρκαστικό χιούμορ που χαρακτηρίζει τον Γιώργο επί σκηνής καθώς και τις προβολές βίντεο που συνοδεύουν κάποια από τα τραγούδια, υπόσχονται χαρά, συγκίνηση και πολύ τραγούδι.
Όπως ο ίδιος λέει, «ήθελα όπως στην παλιά καλή εποχή, να τραγουδήσω μόνο τα τραγούδια που με αγγίζουν πραγματικά, χωρίς την πίεση κάποιας θεματικής ενότητας, παρά μόνο το τι επιλέγει η καρδιά». Κι επειδή το παρελθόν περιέχει τους σπόρους του μέλλοντος, στις συναυλίες θα παρουσιαστούν για πρώτη φορά ζωντανά, τραγούδια από την πολυαναμενόμενη ολοκληρωμένη δισκογραφική συνεργασία του με την Ευανθία Ρεμπούτσικα.

Η ΠΟΛΙΤΙΚΗ ΣΑΤΙΡΑ «Η ΒΙΤΡΙΝΑ»
ΑΠΟ ΤΗΝ ΚΙΝΗΜΑΤΟΓΡΑΦΙΚΗ ΛΕΣΧΗ ΤΩΝ ΕΡΓΑΖΟΜΕΝΩΝ ΤΗΣ ΕΡΤ-3
Η Κινηματογραφική Λέσχη των εργαζομένων της ΕΡΤ-3 και το ΚΕMΕΣ ολοκληρώνουν το αφιέρωμά τους Αμερικανικό Πολιτικό Σινεμά καιπροβάλλουν τη ΜεγάληΔευτέρα 2 Απριλίουστις 21:00στην αίθουσα ΒΑΚΟΥΡΑ 1 (Ιωάννου Μιχαήλ 8, τηλ. 2310233665) την πολιτική σάτιρα του Μάρτιν Ριτ Η βιτρίνα (ΗΠΑ, 1976, έγχρωμη, 95’). Παίζουν: Γούντι Άλεν, Ζίρο Μόστελ, Χέρσελ Μπερνάρντι, Μάικλ Μέρφι, Αντρέα Μαρκοβίκι. Από τις 21:00ως τις 22:00θα προηγηθεί μουσικός πρόλογος με τίτλο Θρήνοι και ύμνοι. Κείμενα από τους Θρήνους του Ιερεμίου συνδυασμένα με εκκλησιαστικούς ύμνους των Παθών και σύγχρονα ποιήματα του Κώστα Βάρναλη σε πρωτότυπες μελοποιήσεις. Παίζουν: Αλέξανδρος Τριανταφύλλου - φυσαρμόνικα, Γιάννης Κολοβός - κοντραμπάσο, Μαρία Φωτίου - απόδοση λόγου. Ποιήματα του Βάρναλη διαβάζει η Κωνσταντίνα Χονδρογιάννη.
Θα προλογίσει ο Αλέξης Ν. Δερμεντζόγλου, ενώ στους θεατές θα διανεμηθεί έντυπη ανάλυση από το Filoitoysinema.blogspot.gr. Στο τέλος της προβολής θα ακολουθήσει μακρά συζήτηση με το κοινό.
Το προς συζήτηση θέμα στο μάθημα για τον κινηματογράφο θα είναι: Η μαύρη λίστα και ο αμερικανικός κινηματογράφος.
Ένας σεναριογράφος, θύμα του μακαρθισμούζητά από έναν παιδικό του φίλο να του «δανείσει» το όνομά του έτσι ώστε να συνεχίσει να γράφει σενάρια.
Η ανάλυση που θα διανεμηθεί είναι η ακόλουθη:
«Στις αρχές της δεκαετίας του ’50, όπου επικρατεί στην Αμερική έντονος αντικομμουνισμός, ο γερουσιαστής Μακάρθι είναι πεπεισμένος ότι η «κόκκινη λαίλαπα» έχει εισχωρήσει στους καλλιτεχνικούς κύκλους και αποφασίζει να καθαρίσει το Χόλυγουντ έτσι ώστε να είναι σίγουρος ότι οι ταινίες θα είναι 100% αγνές, αμόλυντες, με το αμερικανικό ήθος να ξεχειλίζει σε κάθε σενάριο. Πολλοί σεναριογράφοι, σκηνοθέτες, ηθοποιοί βρήκαν το μπελά τους. Το χειρότερο, μπαίνοντας στις περίφημες «μαύρες λίστες», δεν μπορούσαν πια να δουλέψουν πουθενά.
Κάπου εδώ αρχίζει η ιστορία της ταινίας, όταν ο Άλφρεντ Μίλερ (Μάικλ Μέρφι), θύμα του μακαρθισμού, ζητά από τον παιδικό του φίλο, Χάουαρντ Πρινς (Γούντι Άλεν), να του «δανείσει» το όνομά του, να γίνει δηλαδή η βιτρίνα του, έτσι ώστε να μπορεί να συνεχίζει να γράφει σενάρια. Ο Χάουαρντ Πρινς είναι ένας απλός ταμίας σε diner, πολιτικά απαθής και τζογαδόρος, που μονίμως χρωστά λεφτά παντού. Το γεγονός ότι θα παίρνει ένα ποσοστό από τα κέρδη του φίλου του τον δελεάζει. Δέχεται. Και δελεάζεται τόσο πολύ που δέχεται να παίξει τη «βιτρίνα» και για άλλους δύο συγγραφείς.
Τα πράγματα κυλούν θαυμάσια για τον Χάουαρντ μέχρι που το μακρύ και απειλητικό χέρι του μακαρθισμού απλώνεται προς αυτόν. Επίμονες συνεντεύξεις, απαιτητικές επιτροπές που δεν τις ενδιαφέρει να ακούσουν την αλήθεια, απλά «δώσε ένα όνομα, ένα οποιοδήποτε όνομα». Οι «συνεντεύξεις», ή μάλλον ανακρίσεις, είναι εξαντλητικές, η επιμονή να δοθεί μια απάντηση, έστω και κατασκευασμένη, αρκεί να είναι αυτό που θέλουν να ακούσουν τα μέλη της επιτροπής, ασκεί απίστευτες πιέσεις στον ανακρινόμενο. Ο Χάουαρντ αισθάνεται ολοένα και περισσότερο την πίεση που του ασκείται, αρχίζει πια να ακούει και να βλέπει, δεν μπορεί πια να μείνει αμέτοχος, αντιδρά, σηκώνει κεφάλι, χλευάζει την επιτροπή, δεν ονοματίζει κανέναν. Με τις όποιες συνέπειες. Hero of the day.
Ο σεναριογράφος Γουόλτερ Μπερνστάιν υπήρξε ο ίδιος θύμα εκείνης της παρανοϊκής περιόδου και γνώριζε πολύ καλά πώς στήνονταν οι συνεντεύξεις. Όπως και ο σκηνοθέτης Μάρτιν Ριτ. Όπως και ο Ζίρο Μόστελ, ο οποίος δίνει μια αξέχαστη ερμηνεία. Όπως και ο ηθοποιός Χέρσελ Μπερνάρντι.
O Μάρτιν Ριτ σκηνοθετεί με μεγάλα σταθερά πλάνα και μονόπλανα, δινει σημασία στο διάλογο και επιχειρεί με την αφηγηματική του γραφή να μας «διδάξει», να μας κάνει να καταλάβουμε. Κατά κάποιο τρόπο, ακολουθεί μια δική του γραμμή «κοινωνιστικού ρεαλισμού», ενώ αποσυμπιέζει το γέλιο με μερικές αξιοσημείωτες σκηνές όπως της χαράς και της αποδοχής του τέλους ή της ελλειπτικά δοσμένης αυτοκτονίας.»
ΔΕΚΑ ΛΟΓΟΙ ΓΙΑ ΝΑ ΜΗΝ ΧΑΣΕΤΕ ΤH «ΒΙΤΡΙΝΑ»
Εξάλλου, 10 λόγοι για να μη χάσετε τηΒιτρίνα είναι:
Για τους συντελεστές της ταινίας, οι οποίοι ήταν στην πλειοψηφία τους θύματα της μαύρης λίστας.
Γιατί όσο παράξενο και αν φαίνεται το περιστατικό που αφηγείται, έγινε πολλές φορές στην πραγματικότητα, όπως πχ με τον Ντάλτον Τράμπο.
Για την εξονυχιστική σκηνοθεσία του Μάρτιν Ριτ, που είναι αργή ώστε ο θεατής να εμπεδώνει τα γεγονότα.
Για τον τρόπο που ο Ριτ δείχνει ότι όταν οι καθημερινοί άνθρωποιπιστέψουν στις δυνάμεις τους, ξεπερνούν τελικά τον εαυτό τους.
Για τον επιτυχημένο συνδυασμό κωμικών, δραματικών και τραγικών στοιχείων.
Για τον ρόλο του Γούντι Άλεν, που ξεφεύγει από τις υπαρξιακές του αναζητήσεις και παίζει έναν άλλο ήρωα.
Για τον εξαιρετικό ρόλο του Ζίρο Μόστελ, που ουσιαστικά υποδύεται τον εαυτό του.
Για το αισιόδοξο φινάλε, που παρά τον δραματικό του χαρακτήρα, κρύβει έναν χαρακτήρα αντίστασης.
Για τις συγκρίσεις με μεταγενέστερες ταινίες του ίδιου θέματος, και ειδικά με τον Κινηματογράφο Ματζέστικ, όπου και πάλι ένας κωμικός ηθοποιός (Τζιμ Κάρεϊ) υποδύεται έναν διαφορετικό ρόλο.
Για τη διαπίστωση ότι η λίστα κατέστρεψε τελικά όχι μόνο τις καριέρες ορισμένων καλλιτεχνών, αλλά γενικά το αμερικανικό σινεμά ως είδος.
