Ed Sheeran (and Beyonce) have
Christmas number one
Ed Sheeran has beaten off competition from Eminem - and himself - to land his first UK Christmas number one single.
Perfect - which he released in three separate versions in a bid to clinch the Christmas crown - had faced a challenge from Eminem's River, on which Sheeran provides guest vocals.
But the rapper ended in second place, while Wham's Last Christmas came third.
In a video message, the British singer said securing the Christmas top spot was "an actual dream come true".
"I'm very proud and happy," he said. "Thank you so much and have a very merry Christmas, happy holidays and a happy new year."
Sheeran's domination of the Christmas chart was all but assured after he released a new version of his doe-eyed ballad with Beyonce.
That version drove most of his sales - though chart rules mean Beyonce is denied a credit on the Christmas number one, with Sheeran's original counted as the lead track.
Eminem's River took an early lead on streaming services but faltered as the week went on.
Fans had hoped to send Last Christmas to number one to mark the first anniversary of George Michael's death.
Despite support from ITV's This Morning and Michael's ex-bandmate Andrew Ridgeley, however, the song failed to beat its original chart position of number two.
Back in 1984, it was denied the top spot by Band Aid's Do They Know It's Christmas? charity single.

As has become tradition, yuletide standards by Mariah Carey and The Pogues have returned to the Top 40 off the back of huge streaming figures.
There are 16 Christmas songs in the Top 40, among them such classics as Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree by Brenda Lee and Wonderful Christmastime by Sir Paul McCartney.
The presence of lesser-known tracks, like Ariana Grande's Santa Tell Me and Elton John's Step Into Christmas, can be explained by their prominent placing in Spotify's Christmas is Coming playlist.
"By and large, the most popular ones are the ones featured on the front page of Spotify," chart analyst James Masterton told the BBC.
"It exposes the amount of influence the application has over the singles market."
Mariah Carey's All I Want For Christmas Is You was the UK's favourite festive song on Spotify this year.
And it's not just an advent phenomenon. Data released by the BPI this week showed Carey's classic had been played 16,000 times in the first week of July.
According to Spotify, the most popular day for streaming seasonal songs was 13 December, when 13% of all music played in the UK was Christmas-themed.

In the album chart, Eminem's album Revival did manage to dislodge Sheeran's Divide.
It is the star's eighth UK number one album in a row, with his six previous studio albums and the 2005 greatest hits collection Curtain Call all making the top spot.
Led Zeppelin and Abba are the only other artists to accumulated eight consecutive number one albums in the UK.
Revival's first week sales are the second highest of 2017, behind Divide.

Cat Stevens Becomes Yusuf Islam
1977Cat Stevens converts to Islam and changes his name to Yusuf Islam.
It's not the first name change for Stevens, who is born Steven Georgiou in London to Greek immigrants. Like his father, who overcame poverty and started his own restaurant, Stevens is driven to succeed, and that ambition, combined with sensational songwriting chops, makes him one of the top performers of the early '70s; his hits include "Peace Train,""Wild World" and "Morning Has Broken."
In 1975, while swimming in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Malibu, California, he nearly drowns. Swept out to sea, he prays for help. "I knew someone was there and I said, 'Oh God, if you help me I'll work for you,'" he says. "A wave came from behind me and gently pushed me towards the shore and then I had all the energy I needed to get back."
This near-death experience leads him on a spiritual journey, and when his brother gives him a copy of the Koran, he embraces Islam, taking the name Yusuf Islam ("Yusuf" is the Arabic equivalent of "Joseph") and leaves his music career behind. Two years later, he enters into an arranged marriage that lasts a lifetime - the couple raise five children together. Yusuf and his family strictly adhere to the Muslim faith, praying to Mecca five times a day.
He turns his attention toward humanitarian efforts and education, setting up Islamic schools in England with income from his royalties. In 1981, he auctions off his gold records and other mementos from his previous life, using the proceeds to further fund the schools.
Yusuf stays out of the public eye until 1989, when he chimes in on the controversy over the fatwa issued by Ayatollah Khomeini of Iran against the author Salman Rushdie over his book The Satanic Verses. Yusuf refuses to condemn the fatwa, making him the subject of scathing news stories. He becomes a pariah in some circles; the Los Angeles DJ Tom Leykis organizes a burning of Cat Stevens records, and 10,000 Maniacs pull their cover of "Peace Train" from further pressings of their album In My Tribe.
The controversy eventually blows over as he once again goes incognito. In 2000, he releases a children's religious album called A Is For Allahand also reissues his Cat Stevens material. He gradually returns to the limelight, recording and performing both religious and secular music.

"Silent Night" Debuts In Austria
1818A church choir in Austria introduces a new Christmas song for their Midnight Mass: "Stille Nacht!" better known as "Silent Night."
If not for a broken church organ, the world may never have heard one of its most venerable Christmas carols. The parishioners at St. Nicholas church in Oberndorf, Austria, have been making due without a working organ for weeks and really are facing a silent night for Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve. Josef Mohr, the newly appointed assistant pastor, recalls a poem he wrote a couple years earlier about the birth of Christ and thinks it could be turned into a song. With Christmas Eve fast approaching, he brings the composition to his friend Franz Gruber, a schoolteacher and amateur composer. Gruber is struck by the poem's rhythm and adds a melody and guitar arrangement. That night, Mohr and Gruber, backed by a choir, sing "Stille Nacht! Heilige Nacht!" for the first time, completely unaware of the impact their little Christmas song will have on the world.
Meanwhile, Mohr is still waiting for that organ to be fixed. When the organ builder finally shows up to repair the instrument, the pastor gives him a copy of the new Christmas song to bring home. From there, two popular groups of traveling folk singers, the Rainers and the Strassers, start performing the tune on their travels throughout Europe. In 1839, the Rainers head to a gig in New York City and introduce "Stille Nacht!" to America, where it becomes "Silent Night."
The carol is translated into over 300 languages around the world, but in the US the most popular version comes in 1935 when it's warmly crooned by Bing Crosby. Although "Silent Night" is his most popular recording of the decade, the Catholic singer donates all royalties from the religious tune to various charities, not wanting to cash in on his faith.
