America Reaches Peak Singer-Songwriter As "You've Got A Friend" Hits #1
1971The singer-songwriter era reaches its apex as James Taylor's "You've Got A Friend" hits #1 in the US.
The song was written by Carole King and included on her landmark album Tapestry in February 1971. James Taylor played guitar on the track and decided to record his own version, which he released as a single in April. He has a friend in King, who encourages him to cover the song; the pair are touring together with King opening for Taylor, who is the much bigger star.
When "You've Got A Friend" hits the top spot, the Tapestry album is the #1 album in America, enjoying its seventh week at the top. The single drops off the top the following week, but Tapestry keeps going, spending a total of 15 weeks at #1 as King becomes a household name and an inspiration to many young women who decide to pick up guitars and write songs.
Taylor's version wins a Grammy for Song of the Year, but King gets the trophy because she wrote it. She also wins the award for Album of the Year for Tapestry.

Σίγουρα ένα από τα πιο δυνατά σας όπλα είναι η μυγοσκοτώστρα, αλλά γιατί να λερώνετε τα χέρια (και τις επιφάνειες του σπιτιού σας) με αίμα, όταν μπορείτε να απαλλαγείτε με πιο «φυσικούς» και ξεκούραστους τρόπους;

MTV Launches In America
1981MTV goes on the air, bringing music videos to the masses - at least the ones with cable.
With the words "Ladies and gentlemen: Rock and roll," spoken by network co-creator John Lack, Viacom-owned MTV ("Music Television") makes its broadcast debut.
Following a montage of NASA footage, culminating in the iconic photo of an Apollo astronaut standing near the American flag he planted on the Moon (but with the Stars And Stripes replaced by the network's logo), MTV segues into its first music video, "Video Killed The Radio Star" by British duo The Buggles, which had peaked at #40 in the US back in 1979, but was a #1 hit in five European countries. It's followed by Pat Benatar's "You Better Run," Rod Stewart's "She Won't Dance with Me," The Who's "You Better You Bet," and "Little Suzi's On the Up" by the rather less-remembered British duo Ph.D.
Pre-MTV, music videos existed primarily to promote singles by already popular bands; one early example is the clip for "Strawberry Fields Forever," which along with a promo for "Penny Lane" was played on American Bandstand and The Ed Sullivan Show in lieu of The Beatles performing.
Various attempts to launch music video TV channels were made throughout the 1970s, without major success. Involved in some of these efforts were Lack and Robert Pittman, who would become MTV's president/CEO and help turn it into a worldwide sensation, eventually making it cable's first profitable network (ESPN went on the air in 1979, but all that Australian rules football didn't turn a profit).
MTV changes the game, making music videos a key piece of marketing strategy for singers and bands. This favors camera-friendly acts like Duran Duran, Van Halen and Madonna, but is unkind to the likes of REO Speedwagon. It also legitimizes music video as an art form, drawing young directors who go on to make major feature films. Among them, David Fincher (Se7en), Spike Jonze (Her) and F. Gary Gray (Straight Outta Compton). In the '90s, MTV moves away from videos and toward reality and scripted original programming like The Real World and Teen Wolf.

Def Leppard Unleashes Hysteria
1987After years of delays, Def Leppard's Hysteria album is released in the US.
Thanks in large part to producer Mutt Lange, Def Leppard hit it big with their 1983 album Pyromania. The follow-up, however, proves a struggle. Lange is exhausted after working on The Cars' Heartbreak City album, so the Leppers bring in Jim Steinman - the guy responsible for Meat Loaf's hits - to produce. This pairing doesn't pan out, and in late 1984, Steinman is dismissed and the work is scrapped.
The new year is marked by tragedy when on December 31, 1984, drummer Rick Allen loses an arm after crashing his Corvette. As Allen recovers and learns to play with one arm (using a modified drum kit with electronic foot pedals), Mutt Lange returns to the fold and they basically start over. Two years later, Hysteria is finally done. It shoots to #1 in the UK its first week of release and makes a slow climb to the top in America, where it tops the chart in July 1988 after the hot, sticky-sweet "Pour Some Sugar On Me" becomes a breakout hit.
It's another Mutt Lange masterpiece, and a massive seller, eventually shifting over 25 million copies worldwide. Seven singles from the album make the Hot 100, including "Love Bites," which goes to #1.
