Tom Cruise Turns Rock Star In Rock Of Ages
2012Tom Cruise stars as rocker Stacee Jaxx in the film adaptation of the Broadway hit Rock of Ages, an homage to '80s rock and glam metal that features songs from Bon Jovi, Twisted Sister, Pat Benatar, and Journey.
It's 1987, and only one rock star can save a dive bar on Los Angeles' Sunset Strip: Tom Cruise. The actor has never starred in a musical before, so he practices several hours a day for months to play Stacee Jaxx, frontman for the fictional band Arsenal. The film opens with Cruise singing Guns N' Roses "Paradise City." We also meet aspiring rocker Drew (Diego Boneta) and his love interest Sherrie (Julianne Hough), who both work at the struggling Bourbon Room, the club that pins its hopes of survival on Arsenal's final concert. Meanwhile, local conservatives (Catherine Zeta-Jones and Bryan Cranston) are determined to destroy the den of iniquity and protest with Twisted Sister's "We're Not Gonna Take It" and Pat Benatar's "Hit Me With Your Best Shot." Drew readies for his big break with Joan Jett's "I Love Rock And Roll" and Foreigner's "Juke Box Hero," while Stacee admits he's "Wanted Dead Or Alive" ala Bon Jovi. By the end, Drew and Sherrie take the stage to sing Drew's "original" song, Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'."
Rock of Ages is an adaptation of the Tony Award-winning 2006 Broadway hit of the same name, which ran for 2,328 performances until it closed on January 18, 2015. The film takes liberties with the storyline - altering a subplot that includes an affair between Stacee and Sherrie and putting the Bourbon Room in danger over a tax debt instead of from German developers - but uses many of the same songs. While the movie only earns a little over $59 million at the box office, the soundtrack peaks at #5 on the Billboard 200 and is certified gold in Canada.

2 Live Crew Declared Legally Obscene
1990The 2 Live Crew album As Nasty As They Wanna Be becomes the first album declared legally obscene when Federal District Judge Jose Gonzalez rules that the album violates community obscenity standards in three south Florida counties: Broward, Dade, and Palm Beach.
The ruling sets off a censorship firestorm which drives sales of the album past 2 million copies. Two days later, a record store owner is arrested for selling the album, and two days after that, the group is arrested for performing the songs in concert. The court ruling is eventually overturned.
According to the standards set by the United States Supreme Court, art is judged obscene if it:
1) Appeals primarily to prurient interest.
2) Is patently obscene by community standards.
3) Lacks serious artistic, literary, political or scientific merit.
2 Live Crew's case rests on #3, with their lawyer arguing that the group's songs "reflect exaggeration, parody, humor, even about delicate subjects." The case illuminates the divide between those who appreciate hip-hop and those who see it as meaningless. When the case is finally decided, it proves that by legal standards, even the crudest form of hip-hop has artistic merit, just as the nastiest punk rock and metal did before.

Adnan Khashoggi: Saudi billionaire arms dealer dies aged 82
Saudi arms dealer Adnan Khashoggi, a billionaire businessman known for his lavish lifestyle, has died in London at the age of 82.
His family said in statement that he died peacefully while being treated for Parkinson's disease.
Mr Khashoggi became one of the world's richest men in the 1970s and '80s by brokering international arms deals.
His parties were legendary, often lasting for days, but there was also controversy about his business.
A statement from the family on Tuesday said: "He lived his last days surrounded by his devoted family, children and grandchildren, with the same elegance, strength and dignity that characterised his remarkable life. He is survived by his wife Lamia.
"AK was a pioneer who achieved global recognition in a golden age through his extraordinary business achievements and renowned generosity. Our father understood the art of bringing people together better than anyone.
"He combined commercial acumen with an over-riding loyalty to his country, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. His work always furthered the interests of his country."
He most famously brokered arms deals between US firms and Saudi Arabia in the 1960s and '70s, when he worked closely with the Lockheed Corporation, now Lockheed Martin.
Donald Trump
Later, Mr Khashoggi represented France in its race against the UK to secure the initial $20bn al-Yamamah weapons-for-oil deal with the Saudis - a contract that still runs today.
The nature of his business meant that there was always controversy, and in 1987 he appeared on the front cover of Time magazine under the headline: "Those Shadowy Arms Traders: Adnan Khashoggi's High Life and Flashy Deals".
He spent time in a Swiss prison in the 1980s - where he reportedly dined on gourmet food from the Schweizerhof Hotel - fighting extradition to the US after being accused of helping to conceal funds on behalf of former Philippines president Ferdinand Marcos and his shoe-loving wife, Imelda.
The charges were reduced, and he and Mrs Marcos were eventually acquitted.
Mr Khashoggi once owned one of the world's largest yachts, the 86-metre Nabila, which appeared in the James Bond film Never Say Never Again.
When his business empire ran into financial difficulty, he handed the yacht to the Sultan of Brunei who sold it on to Donald Trump, now president of the US, for a reported $29m in the 1980s.
In 1997, a Paris court ordered him to pay a $1.6m fine for smuggling 37 paintings into France in 1986, bought in from the US on his private jet.
And in 1998, the casino at London's Ritz Hotel settled out of court its lawsuit against Mr Khashoggi for £8m of gambling debts.
The businessman, whose late sister Samira was married to former Harrods chief Mohamed Al Fayed, was an uncle of Princess Diana's final love, Dodi Fayed.

Adnan Khashoggi was the embodiment of the extraordinary riches that the petrodollar brought to his homeland, Saudi Arabia - although his fortune was made in arms deals rather than oil.
Khashoggi was born in Mecca. His father's position as personal doctor to King Ibn Saud, the founder of modern Saudi Arabia, brought him into early proximity to the royal court.
Through his vast reserve of contacts and a series of massive international arms deals in the 1960s, '70s and '80s, he ended up rivalling the Saudi royal family for glittering wealth and extravagance.
His parties were legendary, featuring a cast of celebrities, glamorous women and fellow tycoons. But a series of scandals - political and financial - not only tarnished his reputation but greatly diminished his fortune.
He ended his days as a distant shadow of the flamboyant showman and inveterate dealmaker he once was.

Social media reaction has included comments about how "normal" the twins' names are.
One Twitter user wrote: "Classy people give their kids classy names. Ella and Alexander."
And another tweeted: "What, George and Amal Clooney gave their new twins nice normal names? Ella and Alexander. Isn't that a violation of celebrity rules?"
The couple's friend, actor Matt Damon, confirmed that Amal was pregnant with twins back in February.
He was speaking after the news of the pregnancy was reported by CBS's The Talk host Julie Chen.
Explaining how Clooney revealed the news, Damon said: "I was working with him last fall and he pulled me aside on set and I almost started crying.
"I was so happy for him. And I was like, 'How far along is she?' And he goes, 'Eight weeks.'
"I said, 'Are you out of your mind? Don't tell anybody else! Don't you know the 12-week rule?' Of course he doesn't. I was like: 'Just shut up, man.'"
