FRENCH FASHION DESIGNER SONIA RYKIEL HAS DIED
French fashion designer Sonia Rykiel has died at the age of 86.
Rykiel, nicknamed the Queen of Knitwear, had been suffering from Parkinson's disease for some time before her death on Thursday.
Nathalie Rykiel, managing and artistic director of the Sonia Rykiel fashion label, said: "My mother died at 05:00 this morning at her home in Paris from the effects of Parkinson's."
French President Francois Hollande praised her as "a pioneer".
'Extraordinary legacy'
He said of Rykiel, whose relaxed striped knitwear was seen as a shift away from more formal suits: "She invented not just a style but an attitude, a way of living and being, and offered a freedom of movement."
Jean-Marc Loubier, chairman and chief executive of First Heritage Brands, the parent company of the Sonia Rykiel label, said: "It is a sad day but Sonia Rykiel leaves behind her an extraordinary legacy."
He added that she had "helped women and society evolve."
Rykiel was born Sonia Flis in Paris in May 1930, to a Romanian father and Russian mother.
She started her career as a window dresser in 1948, with her first foray into design being when she knitted herself maternity dresses after marrying Sam Rykiel, the owner of a Paris boutique.
Rykiel made her breakthrough in 1962 with the so-called poor boy sweater, which had long sleeves and a fitted shape.
Elle magazine then featured teenage pop star Francoise Hardy wearing a red and pink striped Rykiel sweater on its cover in December 1963.
Brigitte Bardot was later photographed in a Rykiel creation, with Audrey Hepburn among her other famous fans.
Rykiel opened her first ready-to-wear store on Paris's Left Bank in 1968 and her fashion empire went on to include menswear, children's clothing, accessories and perfumes.
According to her website, Rykiel "urged women to be eccentric, seductive, mysterious, and to create their own style".
During her career she developed new techniques like inside-out stitching and no-hem finishings, with other star pieces including embroidered knitted tops and rhinestone-studded berets.
Rykiel wrote several novels and also featured in 1994 film Pret-a-Porter, Robert Altman's satirical take on the fashion industry.
In a 2005 interview, she said she had been plagued by doubt in her early career.
"When I started in fashion, for the first 10 years, I said to myself every day, 'I'm going to quit tomorrow,'" she told Le Nouvel Observateur.
"People are going to figure out that I don't know anything. I always thought I'd be discredited in the end."
In 2012, the designer revealed she had been diagnosed with Parkinson's 15 years earlier.
She had initially kept the condition private but wrote about her diagnosis in a book when her symptoms became too difficult to disguise, fashion site WWD said.
As well as daughter Nathalie, she leaves son Jean-Philippe. No information about a memorial ceremony has yet been made available.

1853 – 1919

Yourpassport to paradise!
Με motto «From sunset to sunrise…»
Γιατί δεν επαναπαύτηκε µόνο στη χειροποίητη arty διακόσµηση made by Carsten, στα εξαιρετικά champagne cocktails και στα φηµισµένα drag shows αλλά γρήγορα µετατράπηκε σε έρωτα, συγκινήσεις και αναµνήσεις για το κοσµοπολίτικο fan club του!
Χτισµένο σε προνοµιακό σηµείο, πάνω στο λόφο, το εξαιρετικά σχεδιασµένο beach bar Jackie O’ υποδέχεται τον µικρόκοσµό του από το πρωί για βουτιές στην πισίνα, relax στο jacuzzi και στα καταγάλανα νερά της παραλίας, shopping στην ultra chic boutique του µε exclusive γνωστά brands αλλά και party atmosphere µε δροσερά exotic cocktails all day long.

Here's one elegant way to become a Mozart completist in one fell swoop. Universal Music Group imprints Decca and Deutsche Grammophon have announced a gigantic, 200-CD box set that contains every single work -- all the symphonies, concertos and operas, plus a newly discovered composition -- by Classical-era genius Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Mozart 225: The New Complete Edition arrives in late October to mark 225 years since the death of the great composer.
The 200 CDs containing 240 hours of music are cataloged into four sections: Chamber, including all solo works; Orchestral, covering his concertos and symphonies; Theatre, including all 22 operas; and Sacred, Private & Supplement, which has a slew of song fragments and sketches. There’s also two hardcover books, including a brand-new biography, and several frame-worthy prints.
The collection, which was created in partnership with the Salzburg Mozarteum Foundation and preeminent Mozart expert Cliff Eisen, will be released worldwide on Oct. 28. The pre-order pricing varies depending on the outlet, with Amazonlisting the set at a whopping $479.36, while Presto Classical appears to offer it for only $350. Either way, that's a fair price to own what may be the largest CD box set to ever be assembled.
Other Mozart 225 products being prepared along with the giant box set include a 33-DVD package of all 22 Mozart operas, a quaint-by-comparison 3-CD collection of Mozart's "singles," plus digital download bundles, streaming albums and themed playlists.
"The time is surely right to take a fresh look at one of the world’s most sublime artistic achievements" says Paul Moseley, Universal Music Group's director of Mozart 225. "We have started from first principles, reassessing new thinking in performance practice and scholarship to produce something that we hope will be an item of desire and reference for general music lovers but also a first port of call for places of study."
Check out some more notable facts about the box set:
15,000 minutes of music
4,000 tracks
600 solo artists and ensembles
240 hours
225 years since his death
200 CDs
70 percent of the recordings are different from the last major Mozart box set
60 orchestras
30 CDs of alternative performances
22 operas
20 record labels represented, including Decca, Deutsche Grammophon
10 days is how long it would take to listen to all the music
5 hours of newly recorded performances
5 frameable prints
2 hours of music recorded on Mozart's own instruments
2 hardback books, including a new full-scale biography by scholar Cliff Eisen
1 newly discovered song, written in a friendly competition with Antonio Salieri

This week, Herb Alpert is in Hollywood's Capitol Studios with an orchestra, cutting his first Christmas album in 48 years. But it's really Christmas in August for the school where his foundation has just promised $10.1 million -- Los Angeles City College, which says it will be able to provide free tuition as well as private lessons to all its music majors for years to come as a result of the Herb Alpert Foundation's gift.
LACC is not one of Southern California's "glamor schools" when it comes to star gift-giving, but the trumpeter is hoping to start a "tag, you're it" chain reaction among his fellow philanthropists, retraining some of their financial attention on the community college system.'
"Some kids are in situations where it's a bit of a struggle just to get their mojo working," says Alpert. "I was just thinking about how expensive it is for kids to go to UCLA or 'SC or one of the major colleges, and I love the idea that we can open the door to help students who are financially challenged to study at LACC, which is a beautiful college. I mean, it's a gem. If you haven't been there lately, the campus is alive and kicking, and there are a lot of great teachers and a lot of great energy there."
Alpert's donation sets a record, or comes close, in several regards. The $10.1 million he has promised more than quintuples the previous high-water mark for a gift to an arts-related program in California's community college system, set last year when the Hollywood Foreign Press Association gave $2 million to LACC's cinema department. It's also the most anyone has ever given to a community college in Southern California for any purpose, and the second-highest amount ever handed over to any two-year school in the entire state, according to Robert Schwartz, executive director of the Los Angeles City College Foundation.
"I think once this gift is announced, we're going to see an even greater influx of talented kids coming in from around the city," says Schwartz. LACC currently has about 175 students majoring in music, but the level of funding -- with an endowment set at about $400,000 a year in perpetuity -- is designed to accommodate an expected 250 music majors getting a free education at the school. Also benefiting in some way will be the rest of the 2,000 students per semester who enroll in at least one LACC music class.
How rare is this kind of gift? "I'll give you this statistic," says Schwartz. "Last year in the United States, there was approximately 40 billion dollars given to higher education in gifts, and of that, less than 2 percent was given to community colleges. Juxtaposed with that is the fact that in the United States, about 80 percent of the workforce has been educated at a community college. Again, of that 40 billion, about a third of that number went to about 20 schools, so it's very concentrated."
John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, Charlie Mingus and Chet Baker are among the past students at the school who could have benefited from this largess. Schwartz likes to point out that LACC -- which has offered music courses since opening in 1929 -- was the first college in the country to offer a jazz major, starting in the 1940s.
Alpert never attended LACC himself, but his brother, David, did. When he considers the roots of his interest in funding music education, he inevitably thinks back well beyond college days.
"When I was 8 years old in my grammar school here at Melrose Elementary, there was a music appreciation class," Alpert says. "And luckily for me there was a table filled with instruments, and I happened to pick up the trumpet. And when I finally made a sound out of it -- because I thought you just blow hot air into the horn -- it was talking for me. I was super shy; I was an introvert, and this horn was speaking for me. … I like the idea of world music — that kids can experience their own creativity and appreciate their own uniqueness. And if they can do that, then hopefully they'll appreciate the uniqueness in others, which is a win-win, because I think we're in kind of a bind today with the world situation."
Some of the younger students who'll benefit from Alpert's generosity may be surprised to learn that their benefactor is bigger than Taylor Swift -- at least according to one ranking: Alpert currently sits at No. 7 on the list of the top Billboard 200 album artists of all time, just ahead of Swift and just behind Mariah Carey. Twenty-five of the albums that put him on that list are being reissued on CD in September, concurrent with the release of a brand-new album, Human Nature, which features a cover of the Michael Jackson hit of that name as its title track.

1965, On the last day of a five-day break from their North American tour, The Beatles attended a recording session for The Byrds. Later that afternoon, The Beatles met Elvis Presley at his mansion in Beverly Hills. It was an awkward meeting, leaving The Beatles with the impression that Presley's personality was decidedly "unmagnetic". John Lennon remarked soon after, ‘Where’s Elvis’ It was like meeting Engelbert Humperdinck.’
1966, The Beach Boys 'God Only Knows' peaked at No.2 on the UK singles chart. The song broke new ground in many ways. It was one of the first commercial songs to use the word 'God' in its title and Brian Wilson used many unorthodox instruments, including the French horns that are heard in the song's famous introduction.
1966, | |
1967, British music entrepreneur and the manager of The Beatles, Brian Epstein was found dead, locked in a bedroom at his London home. A coroner's inquest concluded that Epstein died from an overdose of the sleeping pill Carbitrol. He also managed several other artists including Gerry & The Pacemakers, Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas, Cilla Black and The Remo Four. The first contract between The Beatles and Epstein was auctioned in London in 2008, and was sold for £240,000.
1977, The Floaters were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Float On'. The only UK hit for the Soul/funk act from Detroit, making them One Hit Wonders.
1988, 'Monkey' gave George Michael his eighth US No.1 single of the 1980s, a record only beaten by Michael Jackson.
1990, Stevie Ray Vaughan was killed when the helicopter he was flying in, hit a man-made ski slope while trying to navigate through dense fog. Vaughan had played a show at Alpine Valley Music Theatre, East Troy, Wisconsin with Robert Cray & His Memphis Horns, and Eric Clapton. Vaughan was informed by a member of Clapton's crew that three seats were open on a helicopter returning to Chicago with Clapton's crew, it turned out there was only one seat left; Vaughan requested it from his brother, who obliged. Three members of Eric Clapton's entourage were also killed.
1991, Pearl Jam released their debut album Ten. The group’s most commercially successful album, which has sold over 13 million copies, produced three hit singles: Alive, Even Flow, and Jeremy.
1992, John Lennon's handwritten lyrics to The Beatles song 'A Day In The Life' from Sgt. Pepper sold in an auction at Sotheby's London for $100,000 (£56,600). The lyrics were put up for sale again in March 2006 by Bonhams in New York. Sealed bids were opened on 7 March 2006 and offers started at about $2 million. Frank Ocean beats Dolly Parton and
David Brent to UK number one
Frank Ocean's long-awaited new album has gone to the top of the UK album chart, beating Dolly Parton and Ricky Gervais's comedy alter-ego David Brent.
The R&B singer's album Blonde has had combined sales of 32,000, including 26,000 downloads, since being released via iTunes and Apple Music on Saturday.
That put it ahead of Dolly Parton's 43rd studio album Pure & Simple.
And David Brent's Life On The Road, the soundtrack for Gervais's new film of the same name, is at number three.
Canadian rapper Drake is at number four with Views, followed by Bob Marley, whose compilation Legend is a non-mover at number five.
ELO, Christine and the Queens, Adele, Justin Bieber and Coldplay have all shuffled down the top 10 to make space for the three new entries at the top of this week's chart.
But after two weeks at number one, Stockport pop band Blossoms have plummeted to number 13.
