Adele's 25 makes UK chart history with 800,000 album sales
Adele's new album 25 has sold more than 800,000 copies in its first week of release - the highest ever figure for a single UK chart week.
The album shifted more copies than the next 86 albums in the chart combined, and has become the first album to sell more than 100,000 downloads in a week.
In fact, 252,423 of the album's 800,307 sales were digital with the rest on CD.
Official Charts Company chief executive Martin Talbot said: "The statistics surrounding the album are staggering."
He added: "No album has ever sold 800,000 copies to reach number one in the history of British music."
The previous record was held by Oasis's Be Here Now, which reached number one with sales of 696,000 in 1997. However that album only went on sale three days before the end of the chart week.
Adele's record-breaking sales
- Before this, no album had sold 100,000 copies in a single week this year. Adele's 25 has sold 800,307.
- That is more than the combined sales of the last 19 number one albums in the weeks they topped the chart.
- More than 300,000 people bought 25 on its first day of release.
- Ed Sheeran held the previous record for weekly digital album sales, with 95,709. Adele's 25 has eclipsed that with 252,423 downloads.
- 25 has reached double platinum status already.
- It still has some way to go to match the sales of Adele's last album 21, which is owned by 4.8 million people in the UK.
Martin Talbot said: "What the future holds for 25 will unfold over the coming weeks and months, of course - but we can all be absolutely sure that more records will be toppled as Adele fever grips the nation in the run-up to Christmas."
Adele's third album has also "has done the seemingly impossible", according to Billboard magazine, and sold more than three million in one week in the US.
That is the highest one-week US sales since data tracking began in 1991, overtaking the previous record of 2.4 million set by N'Sync's No Strings Attached in 2000.
The singer has also just announced her first tour since 2011, playing in arenas across Europe from next February.

Charlie - Sip Of Vintage
2316 007989 Charlie - sip of vintage)
& Κυρ. 12:00-02:30, Παρ. & Σάβ. 12:00-05:00.
Ministry
WE
2310 284700 WE)
TOMS Flagship Store
Το απόλυτο talk of the town, καθώς είναι το πρώτο TOMS flagship store που άνοιξε στην Ελλάδα και το δεύτερο στην Ευρώπη, ενώ μας εκπλήσσει ευχάριστα γιατί συνδυάζει κατάστημα με café! 11:00-21:00. 2310 234222, www.toms.com TOMS)
My pub
2310 541716 My Pub)

US DJ Casey Kasem's children sue stepmother for wrongful death
Three of US DJ Casey Kasem's children and his brother have sued the late star's widow for wrongful death in the latest move in a bitter family feud.
The lawsuit accuses Jean Kasem of elder abuse and inflicting emotional distress on Kasem's children by restricting their access to him before his death, according to the AP news agency.
Kasem was known as host of the American Top 40 radio show and as the voice of Shaggy in the TV animation Scooby Doo.
He died last June at the age of 82.
He had been suffering from dementia, and the battle between his children from a previous marriage and their stepmother Jean began before his death.
They claim she abused him before he died, moved him from Santa Monica to Washington without telling them and, after his death, had him buried in an unmarked grave in Norway despite his wishes to be laid to rest in Los Angeles.
"What she did to my father is reprehensible," daughter Kerri Kasem said, according to AP. "It's disgusting. It's horrific."
Jean Kasem's lawyer H Michael Soroy did not immediately return a request for comment to the news agency.
Kerri Kasem said the family members were taking legal action after US prosecutors decided not to bring criminal charges against Jean Kasem, who was married to the star for more than 30 years.
In May, Los Angeles prosecutors said they could not prove at trial that her actions led to his death.
Kerri has taken out the lawsuit with siblings Julie and Michael Kasem and their uncle Mouner. They are seeking damages of $250,000 (£166,000).
But Kerri Kasem said: "We would rather see her in jail than receive one dime. We don't care about the money. We care about justice."
Casey Kasem began his career in the 1950s and found fame with the chart programme in the 1970s.
He famously ended his broadcasts with his signature sign-off: "Keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars."
