Σουίτες για τους επιβάτες της A θέσης
Οι νέες ιδιωτικές καμπίνες της Swiss Air Lines από το 2016
Το πρώτο Boeing 777 της Swiss Air Lines, που θα πραγματοποιεί πτήσεις μεγάλων αποστάσεων, θα εισάγει την εταιρεία σε μια νέα εποχή. Μια εποχή πολυτέλειας. Για τους επιβάτες της πρώτης θέσης τουλάχιστον, οι οποίοι θα έχουν τη δυνατότητα να μετατρέπουν τη θέση τους σε… μια ιδιωτική καμπίνα πολυτελείας.
Το συγκεκριμένο αεροσκάφος χωρά 340 επιβάτες και θα εκτελεί δρομολόγια από/προς Ασία, Νότια Αμερική και τη Δυτική Ακτή των ΗΠΑ.
Η εταιρεία θα αποκτήσει εννέα Boeing 777-300ERs, τα οποία θα αποτελέσουν τη νέα γενιά αεροσκαφών της εταιρείας, στο πλαίσιο της «Next Generation Airline of Switzerland» στρατηγικής της.
Κάθε επιβάτης της πρώτης θέσης θα έχει τη δική του ιδιωτική καμπίνα-σουίτα, η οποία θα διαθέτει μια οθόνη 32 ιντσών. Οι οκτώ θέσεις θα διαθέτουν επιπλέον ηλεκτρικά ρυθμιζόμενα στόρια και προσωπικό χώρο ντουλάπας.
Οι 62 επιβάτες που θα ταξιδεύουν στη Business θέση θα μπορούν επίσης να απολαμβάνουν βελτιωμένες υπηρεσίες, όπως ειδικά σχεδιασμένα καθίσματα, που προσφέρουν μεγαλύτερη ιδιωτικότητα. Τα οφέλη δε σταματούν όμως εκεί, καθώς και οι επιβάτες της οικονομικής θέσης θα απολαύσουν μερικά επιπλέον πλεονεκτήματα, όπως η νέα τεχνολογία καθισμάτων-μαξιλαριών και μια μεγάλη οθόνη αφής.
Στο αεροσκάφος θα υπάρχει ακόμη ένα a self-service kiosk, από το οποίο οι επιβάτες θα μπορούν να επιλέγουν σνακ και αναψυκτικά.

Η λέξη «Αλκατράζ» προέρχεται από την ισπανική λέξη για το θαλασσοπούλι. Έτσι ονόμασε ο ισπανός εξερευνητής Χουάν Μανουέλ ντ'Αγιάλα τη μία από τις τρεις βραχονησίδες που βρίσκονται στον κόλπο του Σαν Φρανσίσκο, όταν κατέπλευσε στην περιοχή και τη χαρτογράφησε.
Λόγω της στρατηγικής του σημασίας, το 1850 ο αμερικανικός στρατός μετέτρεψε το νησάκι σε οχυρό, για την προστασία του λιμανιού. Προς τα τέλη της δεκαετίας, το φρούριο άρχισε να δέχεται και στρατιωτικούς κρατουμένους, οι οποίοι από το 1909 έως το 1911 αξιοποιήθηκαν για την ανέγερση μιας νέας στρατιωτικής φυλακής, που επρόκειτο να μείνει στην ιστορία ως «Ο Βράχος».
Για περισσότερα από 80 χρόνια χρησιμοποιήθηκε για στρατιωτικούς σκοπούς. Στις 12 Οκτωβρίου του 1933 πέρασε στη δικαιοδοσία του αμερικανικού Υπουργείου Δικαιοσύνης και την επόμενη χρονιά μετατράπηκε σε ομοσπονδιακή φυλακή υψίστης ασφαλείας. Τα εγκαίνει έγιναν την πρωτοχρονιά του 1934 και οι πρώτοι κατάδικοι έφτασαν στις 11 Αυγούστου 1934.
Εκεί στέλνονταν οι πιο επικίνδυνοι κακοποιοί και όσοι αρνούνταν να προσαρμοστούν στους κανόνες των κοινών φυλάκων. Στα 29 χρόνια λειτουργίας της, τρόφιμοί της υπήρξαν ορισμένοι από τους πλέον διάσημους γκάνγκστερ, όπως ο Αλ Καπόνε.
Στο Αλκατράζ, οι κρατούμενοι είχαν τέσσερα δικαιώματα: τροφή, ένδυση, στέγη και ιατροφαρμακευτική περίθαλψη. Οποιοδήποτε άλλο προνόμιο έπρεπε να το κερδίσουν. Στα προνόμια αυτά συμπεριλαμβάνονταν οι επισκέψεις συγγενικών προσώπων, η πρόσβαση στη βιβλιοθήκη των φυλακών, ψυχαγωγικές δραστηριότητα όπως ζωγραφική, μουσική, κ.α. Από τον Βράχο δεν μπόρεσε ποτέ να αποδράσει κανείς. Όσοι το επεδίωξαν, είτε πυροβολήθηκαν και σκοτώθηκαν από τους φύλακες, είτε πέθαναν στα παγωμένα νερά του Ειρηνικού Ωκεανού.
Η φυλακή του Αλκατράζ έκλεισε στις 21 Μαρτίου του 1963. Το κόστος συντήρησης της ήταν τόσο υψηλό, που προτιμήθηκε η κατασκευή μιας νέας στην ηπειρωτική χώρα. Μετά το κλείσιμό της, το νησάκι εγκαταλείφθηκε, παρότι υπήρξαν διάφορες ιδέες για την αξιοποίησή του. Μεταξύ άλλων, προτάθηκε να συμπεριληφθεί στα μνημεία των Ηνωμένων Εθνών ως ένα άλλο Άγαλμα της Ελευθερίας, ή να μετατραπεί σε ξενοδοχειακό συγκρότημα και εμπορικό κέντρο.
Το 1969 διεκδικήθηκε από μία ομάδα ιθαγενών, θέλοντας να δημιουργήσουν σ'αυτό ένα ινδιάνικο πολιτιστικό κέντρο. Η προσπάθειά τους, όμως, απέτυχε και το 1973 το Αλκατράζ μετατράπηκε σε εθνικό πάρκο. Σήμερα αποτελεί ένα από τα σημαντικότερα αξιοθέατα της περιοχής και δέχεται περισσότερους από ένα εκατομμύριο επισκέπτες ετησίως.

Η Ταινιοθήκη των εργαζομένων της ΕΡΤ-3 στο αφιέρωμα Δεσμώτες του ιλίγγου (με ήρωες που καταλαμβάνονται από υπέρμετρες, παραισθητικές φαντασιώσεις) προβάλλει πάντα με ελεύθερη είσοδο στον πεζόδρομο της Αγγελάκη 14τη Δευτέρα17 Αυγούστουστις 21:00τις Μπανάνες (Bananas, έγχρωμο, ΗΠΑ, 1971, διάρκεια 82’ ) του Γούντι Άλεν σε σενάριο δικό του. Πρωταγωνιστεί ο ίδιος.
Η ταινία είναι μια ευγενική προσφορά- χορηγία της New Star και του κ. Βελισάριου Κοσυβάκη.
Η συνδιοργάνωση και καλλιτεχνική επιμέλεια γίνονται από το ΚΕΜΕΣ. Θα προλογίσει ο Αλέξης Ν. Δερμεντζόγλου, ενώ στο τέλος της προβολής θα ακολουθήσει μακρά συζήτηση με το κοινό. Στους θεατές θα διανεμηθεί έντυπη ανάλυση του Αμερικανού κριτικού Τζον Πούτσιο.
Το προς συζήτηση θέμα στο λαϊκό πανεπιστήμιο για τον κινηματογράφο θα είναι Οι λαβιρυνθώδεις αναζητήσεις του Γούντι Άλεν.
Ο βασικός ήρωας φλερτάρει ανεπιτυχώς μια φοιτήτρια τη Νάνσι,. Στην απελπισία του φεύγει για τη Λατινική Αμερική σε μια φανταστική χώρα, της οποίας γίνεται τελικά ηγέτης.
Ντελιριακή κωμωδία πολλών επιπέδων όπου ο Γούντι Άλεν σατιρίζει τόσο τις δικές του ερωτικές νευρώσεις όσο και τα κινήματα της Λατινικής Αμερικής με στιλ αποσπασματικό ως πικρό σχόλιο.
Η κριτική ανάλυση που θα διανεμηθεί είναι η ακόλουθη:
«Ένας δικτάτορας της Νότιας Αμερικής στη μικρή φανταστική χώρα του Σαν Μάρκος πρόκειται να δολοφονηθεί και η εκπομπή «Wide World of Sports» του ABC είναι έτοιμη να καλύψει καρέ-καρέ το συμβάν. Αφού πέφτουν οι πυροβολισμοί, ο δημοσιογράφος Χάουαρντ Κόσελ παίρνει συνέντευξη απ’ τον ετοιμοθάνατο πρόεδρο, καθώς είναι στα τελευταία του και βγάζει επιθανάτιες κραυγές πόνου: «Λοιπόν..» λέει ο Χάουαρντ, ενώ ο Πρόεδρος δυσκολεύεται να συνεχίσει, «σαφώς είστε αναστατωμένος…».
Ο Γούντι Άλεν υποδύεται τον Φίλντιν Μέλις, έναν τύπο που δουλεύει ως δοκιμαστής προϊόντων, ρόλος που του δίνει την απεριόριστη δυνατότητα να εμπλακεί σε ένα πλήθος καταστάσεων. Η βασική έγνοια του Μέλις, αν και επιδιώκει να φλερτάρει ανεπιτυχώς γυναίκες, είναι η Νάνσι, μια φοιτήτρια κατά μία έννοια και πολιτική ακτιβίστρια κατά κύριο λόγο. Αυτός την ερωτεύεται, αυτή πάλι όχι! Φτάνοντας σε απόγνωση, αποφασίζει να πάει στη Νότια Αμερική και να συνταχθεί με τους αντάρτες στο Σαν Μάρκος. Η διαφυγή στη Νότια Αμερική δίνει στον Άλεν τη δυνατότητα να εντάξει περισσότερα κωμικά στοιχεία, καθώς προσπαθεί να ασκηθεί μαζί με τους στρατιώτες και να εξασκηθεί στον ανταρτοπόλεμο της ζούγκλας. Ένα περιστατικό που περιλαμβάνει την αντιμετώπιση ενός δαγκώματος από φίδι είναι εξαιρετικά διασκεδαστικό.
Σατιρίζοντας τον Φιντέλ Κάστρο στην Κούβα, όταν οι αντάρτες κέρδισαν την επανάσταση, δείχνει τον αρχηγό τους να παραλογίζεται από την εξουσία και να ανακηρύσσει τον εαυτό του ως το νέο δικτάτορα. Απαιτεί οι κάτοικοι να αλλάζουν εσώρουχα κάθε μια ώρα και επιβάλλει με νόμο να τα φοράνε πάνω απ’ τα ρούχα. Οι αντάρτες αποφασίζουν ότι πρέπει να αλλάξουν ηγέτη και στη θέση του βάζουν τον Μέλις, ο οποίος πηγαίνει πίσω στις ΗΠΑ, για να ζητήσει οικονομική βοήθεια για τη χώρα και συναντά ξανά την Νάνσι, η οποία τον ερωτεύεται λόγω του νέου του αξιώματος. Η ταινία τελειώνει με τον γάμο του Φίλντιν και της Νάνσι και την τηλεοπτική προβολή της τελετής από την εκπομπή «Wide World of Sports». Ο δημοσιογράφος Κόσελ εμφανίζεται ξανά στην κρεβατοκάμαρα του ζευγαριού κάνοντας απευθείας σχολιασμό θα λέγαμε!
Η έμπνευση για την ταινία «Μπανάνες» λέγεται ότι ήταν κυρίως οι Αδελφοί Μαρξ και εντοπίζουμε μια ακόμα αναφορά στον Χάρπο, όταν ο Φίλντιν βρίσκει έναν αρπιστή στη ντουλάπα του. Άλλες επιρροές φαίνεται να έχει απ’ το περιοδικό «MAD», σίγουρα από τις ταινίες του «Ροζ Πάνθηρα» και από την τηλεοπτική εκπομπή του Έρνι Κόβατς.
Αν και είναι αισθητά σε μεγαλύτερο βαθμό ανώτερη σκηνοθετικά από την πρώτη του ταινία, σε πολλές σκηνές σκοπίμως χρησιμοποιεί αυτοσχεδιαστικά στοιχεία και οι ηθοποιοί μοιάζουν να λένε αυθόρμητα τις ατάκες κατά τη διάρκεια της ταινίας. Αυτό προσφέρει πολλά στην ασύνδετη, λιτή μορφή της ταινίας. Ο Άλεν εντάσσει επίσης, όπως και στις μετέπειτα ταινίες του, ανέκδοτα για Εβραίους, όταν ο Πρόεδρος του Σαν Μάρκος ζητάει βοήθεια από την Αμερική εναντίον των επαναστατών και αντί να πάρει την CIA παίρνει την UJA, την Εβραϊκή Ένωση Προσφύγων, γεγονός με κωμικές προεκτάσεις!
Με τη ζωντανή, χορευτική Λατινοαμερικάνικου ρυθμού μουσική του Μάρβιν Χάμλις και με μία σύντομη εμφάνιση του Σιλβέστερ Σταλόνε (πριν να γίνει γνωστός απ’ το ROCKY) σαν ένας καταχθόνιος κακοποιός, οι «Μπανάνες» είναι μια σύντομη, αλλά ανεπανάληπτα ξεκαρδιστική ταινία».

Cilla Black to be buried in Liverpool
Cilla Black is to be buried in her home city of Liverpool next week.
The entertainer's funeral will take place on Thursday 20 August at St Mary's Church in the suburb of Woolton.
The Right Reverend Thomas Williams, Auxiliary Bishop of Liverpool and former Parish Priest of St Anthony's, Scotland Road, will officiate.
Black, who emerged from the city's music scene to find fame in the 1960s before becoming a TV host, died after having a stroke at the age of 72.
After the funeral, her body will be laid to rest at a private ceremony in Allerton Cemetery, where her parents are buried.
Her late husband and manager, Bobby Willis, was cremated in 1999.
The late entertainer's representative said further details would be released "once all the preparations have been finalised".

Ένα εξαήμερο γεμάτο από μουσική, κόντρα στις όποιες δυσκολίες παρουσιάζονται σε οικονομικό και κοινωνικό επίπεδο, θα ζήσουν όσοι επισκεφτούν το διάστημα από 18 έως 23 Αυγούστου το Νεστόριο της Καστοριάς για το 37ο River Party.
Σύμφωνα με τους διοργανωτές, φέτος το River Party, χωρίς καμία αύξηση στην τιμή του εισιτηρίου του, προσθέτει μία ακόμη μέρα καθώς ενώνεται για πρώτη φορά με το Happy People Dance Festival και φιλοξενεί κορυφαίους Djs.
Σε τέσσερις σκηνές, μεγάλα ονόματα της ελληνικής μουσικής σκηνής και δύο καλεσμένοι από το εξωτερικό, ο Gramatik και ο James Arthur, θα προσφέρουν περισσότερη μουσική κι ευκαιρία για ακόμη μεγαλύτερο ξεφάντωμα στον κόσμο που θα βρεθεί στο Νεστόριο.
Η αυλαία θα ανοίξει στις 18 Αυγούστου με Φοίβο Δεληβοριά, Gramatik, Ζωντανούς Νεκρούς και Λεωνίδα Μπαλάφα, ενώ την επομένη τη "σκυτάλη"παίρνουν οι: Αλκίνοος Ιωαννίδης, Παύλος Παυλίδης, Μόνικα και Μαρίζα Ρίζου.

ΤΟ ΠΟΔΗΛΑΤΟ ΠΟΥ ΕΙΝΑΙ ΕΣΤΙΑΤΟΡΙΟ
Υπάρχει κάτι στο Κόκκινο Ποδήλατο που δεν μπορεί να αμφισβητήσει κανείς. Αποτελεί ένα από τα πιο όμορφα -αν όχι το ομορφότερο- και συγκλονιστικά -αν όχι το συγκλονιστικότερο- «μπαλκόνια» της Οίας στη Σαντορίνη. Με το που ανεβαίνει κάποιος τα σκαλοπάτια του, κι αφού αντικρίσει το κόκκινο ποδήλατο που είναι «κρεμασμένο» στην είσοδο και εξηγεί την ονομασία του εστιατορίου, βλέπει μπροστά του τον παράδεισο. Το εστιατόριο μοιάζει σκαρφαλωμένο στην Οία και ο χώρος του απλώνεται αμφιθεατρικά, προσφέροντας την καλύτερη θέα του οικισμού.
Περνώντας στα ενδότερα, με το που καθίσεις στο χώρο του, έχω την αίσθηση πως ασυναίσθητα μπαίνεις σε μια διαδικασία μύησης στους κανόνες του. Εξηγούμαι: Η τέχνη, που πρωταγωνιστεί αθόρυβα μέσα από την εξαιρετική διακόσμηση, η κλασσική μουσική που αποτελεί το ιδανικότερο soundtrack και η θέα στο θαύμα της Σαντορίνης συνωμοτούν και κατορθώνουν να σε εντάξουν στο πλαίσιο μιας μοναδικής μεν εμπειρίας, που όμως μοιάζει οικεία και όχι «στημένη».
Όταν στα παραπάνω προστεθούν το ευγενικό προσωπικό, το άμεσο service και φυσικά ο νέος κατάλογος που φέρει την υπογραφή του ταλαντούχου σεφ Γκίκα Ξενάκη (του αθηναϊκού Aleria) και εκτελείται από τον Νίκο Κουτσούκο, το Κόκκινο Ποδήλατο απλά συμπεριλαμβάνεται στα εστιατόρια που πρέπει κανείς να επισκεφτεί οπωσδήποτε ερχόμενος στο νησί.
Η φετινή συνάντηση του σεφ έχει φέρει στη γαστρονομική σκηνή του νησιού ένα αξιοζήλευτο μενού. Υπηρετεί την ελληνική δημιουργική κουζίνα, τιμά τα σαντορινιά τοπικά προϊόντα αλλά και ευρύτερα τα ελληνικά, ενώ προτείνει συνταγές που μας ταξιδεύουν στα παιδικά μας χρόνια, βγαλμένες από ένα σύγχρονο «φίλτρο».
Η σαλάτα του με μαριναρισμένη φέτα σε Visanto , καρπούζι με μάραθο, γλυστρίδα και γρανίτα από μέλι και ούζο είναι ένα από τα πιάτα που αρχικά βλέποντας το, και κατόπιν δοκιμάζοντάς το, θα σας θυμίσει παιδικά καλοκαίρια σας και οικογενειακές διακοπές. Άλλες προτάσεις του καταλόγου που ξεχωρίσαμε και που θα σας κερδίσουν είναι, ο μαριναρισμένος γαύρος σε ασύρτικο ξύδι και ρίγανη, κους κους με σαντορινιό άνυδρο κολοκυθάκι, μαγιονέζα από πελτέ λιαστής ντομάτας και αφρό από ούζο και ο κόκορας κρασάτος με χοντρά μακαρόνια γεμιστά με σκοτύρι, μαρμελάδα φοινόκιο και αφρό μπαχαρικών.
Μην παραλείψετε να δοκιμάσετε τα γλυκά του καταλόγου, που είναι πραγματικά πειρασμοί. Το μελιτίνι Σαντορίνης, καμμένη μαύρη ζάχαρη, κρέμα λεμόνι και γλυκό του κουταλιού τοματίνι με αρμπαρόριζα και η κρέμα γαλακτομπούρεκο, με καραμελωμένα φύλλα, σάλτσα κανέλα και σορμπέ μανταρίνι δεν πρέπει να λείπουν από το τραπέζι σας. Στα συν του η προσεγμένη λίστα κρασιών ικανή να καλύψει κάθε γούστο και budget.
Οι ρομαντικοί αυτού του κόσμου σίγουρα θα λατρέψουν το Κόκκινο Ποδήλατο με το που το αντικρίσουν, οι καλαίσθητοι θα το ερωτευτούν και οι εκλεπτυσμένοι θα το εντάξουν στην λίστα των αγαπημένων τους. Οι γευσιγνώστες θα το εκτιμήσουν και οι λάτρεις της ζεστής φιλοξενίας θα επιστρέφουν στο χώρο του ξανά και ξανά. Οι τελευταίοι είναι εκείνοι που στα όσα θα αγαπούν εδώ θα συμπεριλαμβάνουν και την -ιδιοκτήτριά του- Χαρά Κούρτη, που γνωρίζει το νησί σαν την παλάμη της και δίνει τα καλύτερα tips, αναζητά μονίμως τρόπους που εξελίσσουν το «προϊόν της», ενώ τιμά τους καλεσμένους της (έτσι αντιμετωπίζεται άλλωστε εδώ ο επισκέπτης) με τον πιο φιλόξενο τρόπο.
Tip: Από τον εξωτερικό χώρο του εστιατορίου θα έχετε θέα στα παλιά «κομμάτια» του οικισμού και θα απολαύσετε την ομορφότερη ανατολή του φεγγαριού.

ΣΗΜΕΡΑ-14 ΑΥΓΟΥΣΤΟΥ
1771: γεννιέται στο Εδιμβούργο ο Σκωτσέζος ιστορικός, συγγραφέας και ποιητής, που τιμήθηκε με τίτλο ευγενείας για τα συγγράμματά του, Σερ Γουόλτερ Σκότ. 1962, Unhappy with drummer Pete Best's role in The Beatles Brian Epstein and the other three members decided to sack him. Best played his last gig the following night at The Cavern, Liverpool. Ringo Starr who was nearing the end of a three-month engagement with Rory Storm & the Hurricanes at a Butlin's holiday camp received a telephone call from John Lennon, asking him to join The Beatles. Γάλλος συνθέτης της όπερας, ο οποίος θαυμάστηκε για τον λυρισμό, τον αισθησιασμό, τον συναισθηματισμό και τη θεατρικότητα της μουσικής του.
Ο Ζιλ Εμίλ Φρεντερίκ Μασνέ (Jules Emile Frederic Massenet) γεννήθηκε στο Μοντό, προάστιο σήμερα του Σεντ Ετιέν, στις 12 Μαΐου του 1842. Σε ηλικία έξι ετών άρχισε μαθήματα πιάνου με τη μητέρα του Αδελαΐδα, που ήταν καθηγήτρια πιάνου, και στα 11 του χρόνια έγινε δεκτός στο Ωδείο των Παρισίων. Τα περισσότερα χρόνια της μαθητείας του τα πέρασε φιλοξενούμενος σε συγγενικό σπίτι, αφού οι γονείς του αναγκάστηκαν να εγκαταλείψουν το Παρίσι για βιοποριστικούς λόγους. Ο νεαρός Ζιλ για να εξασφαλίσει τα προς το ζην άρχισε να παίζει κρουστά στο Teatre Lyrique και πιάνο στο Café de Belleville.
Αν και οι δάσκαλοί του στο Ωδείο δεν διέκριναν κάποιο ταλέντο στον Μασνέ, τα πράγματα έλαβαν διαφορετική τροπή, όταν το 1862 κέρδισε το πρώτο βραβείο σε μουσικό διαγωνισμό στη Ρώμη με την καντάτα David Rizzio. Τα επόμενα τρία χρόνια έζησε στην πρωτεύουσα της Ιταλίας, όπου γνωρίστηκε με τον Φραντς Λιστ. Με δική του προτροπή άρχισε να παραδίδει μαθήματα πιάνου στη Νινόν ντε Γκρεσί, κόρη πλούσιας οικογένειας, την οποία τελικά παντρεύτηκε το 1866.
Το πρώτο έργο του ήταν η μονόπρακτη όπερα La grand’tante, που ανέβηκε το 1867 στο Παρίσι, χωρίς επιτυχία. Το 1871 ο Μασνέ κλήθηκε στα όπλα και υπηρέτησε ως στρατιώτης στον Γαλλο-Πρωσικό Πόλεμο, ο οποίος κατέληξε σε συντριπτική ήττα για τη Γαλλία και συνέβαλε στην ενοποίηση της Γερμανίας.
Η αναγνώριση του Μασνέ ήλθε το 1873 με το ορατόριο Μαρία Μαγδαληνή, που επαινέθηκε από ομοτέχνους του, όπως οι Τσαϊκόφσκι, Ντ’ Ιντί και Γκουνό. Το έργο αυτό αποτελεί παράδειγμα συγχώνευσης του θρησκευτικού αισθήματος και του ερωτισμού, που απαντά συχνά στο έργο του Μασνέ. Την ίδια χρονιά έγραψε τη μουσική για το θεατρικό έργο Ερινύες του Λεκόντ ντε Λιλ, στο οποίο περιλαμβάνεται η δημοφιλής Ελεγεία, ένα κομμάτι για τσέλο και ορχήστρα.
Το 1878 αναλαμβάνει καθηγητής της σύνθεσης στο Ωδείο των Παρισίων και αναδεικνύει συνθέτες, όπως οι Αντρέ Μπλοχ, Γκιστάβ Σαρπεντιέ, Ερνέστ Σοσόν, Φοράν Σμιτ, Ρεϊνάλτο Χαν, Ζορζ Ενέσκου, Σαρλ Κεσλέν και Σπύρος Σαμάρας. Τον ίδιο χρόνο παίρνει τη θέση του Καμίλ Σεν Σανς στην Ακαδημία Καλών Τεχνών και γίνεται το νεώτερο μέλος της, σε ηλικία 36 ετών.
Η πρώτη του μεγάλη επιτυχία στο χώρο της όπερας έρχεται στις 19 Ιανουαρίου 1884, με την πρεμιέρα της Μανόν, που βασίζεται στο μυθιστόρημα του Αντουάν Πρεβό Μανόν Λεσκό και από πολλούς θεωρείται το αριστούργημά του. Πρόκειται για ένα ερωτικό δράμα, με πρωταγωνίστρια μια νεαρή επαρχιωτοπούλα, τη Μανόν Λεσκό, που εκτυλίσσεται στη Γαλλία του 18ου αιώνα. Στο ρετσιτατίβο, ο Μασνέ χρησιμοποιεί το ασυνήθιστο επινόημα της προσφυγής στον πεζό λόγο, με μια ελαφριά ορχηστρική συνοδεία.
Τον επόμενο χρόνο παρουσιάζει την όπερα Λε Σιντ (πρεμιέρα 30 Νοεμβρίου 1885), που αφηγείται την ιστορία του Ελ Σιντ, του απελευθερωτή των Ισπανών από τους Άραβες. Η όπερα αυτή του Μασνέ διασώζεται μέχρι σήμερα, χάρη στη σουίτα μπαλέτου της δεύτερης πράξης, στην οποία περιλαμβάνει και το γνωστό κομμάτι Aragonaise, που παίζεται και ως αυτόνομο έργο.
Στις 15 Φεβρουαρίου 1892 ανεβάζει με μεγάλη επιτυχία την όπερα Βέρθερος, βασισμένη στο ομώνυμο ρομαντικό μυθιστόρημα του Γκαίτε και δύο χρόνια αργότερα (16 Μαρτίου 1894) την όπερα Θαΐς. Το λιμπρέτο βασίζεται στην ομώνυμη νουβέλα του Ανατόλ Φρανς, που αφηγείται με εικονοκλαστικό τρόπο την ιστορία της εταίρας Θαϊδος, η οποία έζησε τον 4ο αιώνα στην Αίγυπτο και μετεστράφη στον Χριστιανισμό. Η όπερα είναι γνωστή σήμερα για το συμφωνικό ιντερμέδιο της δεύτερης πράξης Διαλογισμός (Meditation), γραμμένο για βιολί και ορχήστρα, που αποτελεί μέρος του καθιερωμένου ρεπερτορίου για βιολί.
Εκτός από όπερες, ο Μασνέ έγραψε ορχηστρική μουσική (ορχηστρικές σουίτες, ένα κοντσέρτο για πιάνο), καντάτες, ορατόρια και 200 τραγούδια. Το 1912 εξέδωσε την αυτοβιογραφία του με τον τίτλο Οι αναμνήσεις μου (Mes Souvenirs). Ο Μασνέ ήταν ένας σκληρά εργαζόμενος συνθέτης, που ξεκινούσε να δουλεύει από τις 4 το πρωί. Συνέθετε από μνήμης και όχι στο πιάνο, όπως η πλειονότητα των συνθετών. Αυτό τον βοήθησε να γίνει ένας σπουδαίος ενορχηστρωτής. Ακόμη και στα πιο δυνατά περάσματα, η ορχηστρική υφή των συνθέσεών του είναι διαυγής. Ο ίδιος απέφευγε να παρακολουθεί την εκτέλεση των έργων του και πληροφορούνταν την τύχη τους από φίλους και γνωστούς.
Στην ανοδική μουσική του πορεία συνεισέφεραν με τις γνωριμίες τους στο καλλιτεχνικό και δημοσιογραφικό κύκλωμα ο συνθέτης Αμπρουάζ Τομά και ο εκδότης Ζορζ Χαρτμάν. Σημαντικό ρόλο στην καλλιτεχνική του διαδρομή έπαιξε και ο γάμος του με τη Νινόν ντε Γκρεσί, ο οποίος του εξασφάλισε μια άνετη ζωή, χωρίς οικονομικά προβλήματα.
Ο Ζιλ Μασνέ πέθανε στο Παρίσι στις 13 Αυγούστου 1912, σε ηλικία 70 ετών, χτυπημένος από την επάρατη νόσο. Οι συνθέσεις του ήταν αρκετά δημοφιλείς στα τέλη του 19ου αιώνα και τις αρχές του 20ου αιώνα. Μετά τον θάνατό του, το ύφος του θεωρήθηκε ξεπερασμένο και οι περισσότερες όπερές του περιέπεσαν στην αφάνεια. Εκτός από τη Μανόν, τον Βέρθερο και τη Θαϊδα, οι υπόλοιπες από τις 22 όπερές του σπανίως ανεβαίνουν.

1955, Elvis Presley attended a meeting in Memphis with his manager Bob Neal, Colonel Tom Parker and Vernon Presley, at which a new contract was signed that named Colonel Parker as "special advisor" with control of virtually every aspect of Elvis' career. Parker was not really a Colonel at all, but a Dutch immigrant named Andreas Cornelius van Kujik, whose honorary title was given to him in 1948 by Governor Jimmie Davis of Louisiana. He was a flamboyant promoter whose pre-Elvis experience included shows called The Great Parker Pony Circus and Tom Parker And His Dancing Turkeys and was a veteran of carnivals, medicine shows and various other entertainment enterprises. | |

1965, The Beatles set a new world record for the largest attendance at a pop concert when they played in front of 55,600 fans at Shea Stadium in New York City. The Beatles were paid $160,000 for the show, the set list included: ‘Twist and Shout’, ‘She's a Woman’, ‘I Feel Fine’, ‘Dizzy Miss Lizzie’, ‘Ticket to Ride’, ‘Can't Buy Me Love’, ‘Baby's In Black’, ‘I Wanna Be Your Man’, ‘A Hard Day's Night’, ‘Help!’, and ‘I'm Down’. 1969, Woodstock Festival was held on Max Yasgur's 600 acre farm in Bethel outside New York.
