DJ Casey Kasem, best known for hosting US radio show American Top 40, has died at the age of 82, his daughter has said.
Kasem became a household name in the US after launching the nationally-syndicated show in 1970.
He also voiced cartoon character Shaggy in Scooby-Doo.
He had suffered from Lewy body disease, a form of dementia, and had recently been at the centre of a bitter family court battle over his care.
His death comes days after a judge allowed the star's daughter Kerri to withhold food, liquid and medication from her father against the wishes of his wife of 34 years, Jean.
A message posted on Twitter by Kerri Kasem said: "Early this Father's Day morning, our dad Casey Kasem passed away surrounded by family and friends.
"Even though we know he is in a better place and no longer suffering, we are heartbroken.
"Thank you for all your love, support and prayers. The world will miss Casey Kasem, an incredible talent and humanitarian; we will miss our Dad."
Kasem began his career in the 1950s and found fame with the chart programme.
He famously ended his broadcasts with his signature sign-off: "Keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars."
After spells hosting countdown shows under other titles, he returned to American Top 40 in the 1990s and retired from the airwaves in 2009.
Around the world, his radio rundown was broadcast in 50 countries and he was known for the spin-off TV show America's Top 10.

In Scooby-Doo, Kasem voiced the scruffy, food-loving but sometimes cowardly Shaggy from the first series in 1969 until 1995, and again from 2002 until 2009.
He had numerous other roles in TV shows, animations and commercials over the years.
The veteran presenter received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1981 and was inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame in 1992. In 2003, he was honoured with the Radio Icon award at The Radio Music Awards in Las Vegas.
'One of the greats'
Among those paying tribute were Ryan Seacrest, who took over from Kasem as host of American Top 40 in 2004.
In a statement, Seacrest recalled how he would listen to Kasem every week "and dream about someday becoming a radio DJ".
"Casey had a distinctive friendly on-air voice, and he was just as affable and nice if you had the privilege to be in his company. He'll be greatly missed by all of us," he said.
Rock star Bryan Adams described him as "one of the greats of American radio".
Last month, Jean Kasem moved her husband from a California nursing home to friends in Washington state, after courts in California awarded Kerri temporary conservatorship over her father's care.
Court documents showed that Kasem's daughters Kerri and Julie had accused Jean of "elder abuse" by isolating their father from his children. Kasem and Jean also had a daughter together called Liberty.

(CNN) -- Casey Kasem, who entertained radio listeners for almost four decades as the host of countdown shows such as "American Top 40" and "Casey's Top 40," died early Sunday, according to a Facebook post from his daughter Kerri Kasem.
The news was confirmed by Casey's Kasem's agent, Don Pitts.
Casey Kasem was 82 and had been hospitalized in Washington state for two weeks.
"Early this Father's Day morning, our dad Casey Kasem passed away surrounded by family and friends," Kasem's children -- Kerri, Mike and Julie -- wrote in a statement released by Kasem's representative, Danny Deraney.

Kasem's longtime friend, Gonzalo Venecia, and his younger brother, Mouner Kasem, were also with him when he died at St. Anthony's Hospital in Gig Harbor, Washington, at 3:25 a.m. Sunday, a family member said.
Casey Kasem had been suffering from Lewy body disease, the most common type of progressive dementia after Alzheimer's.
He had recently been the subject of a bitter court battle involving three of his children by a previous marriage and his wife, Jean.
His oldest children, who challenged their stepmother for control of Kasem's medical decisions in his last months, are not fighting his wife for possession of his remains, a family member told CNN Sunday.
Daughter Julie Kasem will host a memorial celebration at her Northridge, California, home on Saturday, June 21, the family member said. No other funeral arrangements were yet known.
No autopsy is expected since Kasem died under a doctor's care in a hospital. The immediate cause of death was from sepsis caused by an ulcerated bedsore, the family member said.
In May, a California judge awarded Kerri Kasem temporary power of attorney after Jean Kasem took her husband out of a nursing home and moved him to Washington amid family feuding.
A Washington judge later allowed Kerri to visit her father in that state.
Casey Kasem was hospitalized after an argument between Jean and Kerri in which his wife threw meat at her stepdaughter.
Last week, a Los Angeles County judge gave daughter Kerri Kasem the authority to have doctors end his infusions of water, food and medicine.
Kasem was already a popular disc jockey in Los Angeles when he became the host of "American Top 40" in 1970. The syndicated show, which counted down the 40 most popular songs in the United States based on Billboard magazine's Hot 100 music chart, began on just seven radio stations but quickly became a mainstay of thousands, all around the world.
"When we first went on the air, I thought we would be around for at least 20 years. I knew the formula worked. I knew people tuned in to find out what the No. 1 record was," he told Variety in 1989.
Kasem's first No. 1, concluding the "AT40" premiere show of July 4, 1970, was Three Dog Night's "Mama Told Me (Not to Come)." His last on successor show "American Top 20," almost exactly 39 years later, was "Second Chance" by Shinedown.
But the show wasn't just about finding out who was No. 1.
Its features, included biographical details on performs, flashbacks, album cuts and Kasem's "long-distance dedication" for listeners who wrote to dedicate songs to friends and loved ones far away.
Kasem, whose baritone was always friendly and upbeat, delivered these in his most sympathetic voice, warm enough to melt butter. "Dear Casey," he began, and would read an emotional letter from a listener who wanted to connect with an old flame, express regret to a new love or send wishes to a far-flung family member.
The first one, for example, was from a male listener who wanted to dedicate Neil Diamond's "Desiree" to a sweetheart named Desiree who was moving to Germany.
The show, originally three hours, expanded to four in the late '70s.
In many ways, even as Top 40 radio moved from the AM to the FM dial and took on the name "Contemporary Hit Radio,""American Top 40" remained a throwback to the way the format was in the 1960s, with frequent number jingles ("Number 29!") and a fast-moving mix, though Kasem, in temperament, practically defined the laid-back hosts of the Me Decade. (The exception to the laid-back rule was a much-copied outtake, now readily available on the Internet, of Kasem exploding in anger over a long-distance dedication that succeeded an up-tempo record.)
The show inspired several imitators, including a television version, "America's Top 10," hosted by Kasem himself.
Kasem left "American Top 40" in 1988 over a contract dispute with ABC Radio Networks and signed with competitor Westwood One, for whom he started a show called "Casey's Top 40" in 1989. The new show used a different publication's chart, but it was the same old Casey: smooth, cheerful, full of information.
"The magic of Casey is that he is the ultimate professional in whatever he does. ... He enlightens, he explores, he suggests, he provokes and he informs," fellow DJ Gary Owens told Billboard in 1997.
Kasem acquired the name "American Top 40" and in 1998 resumed hosting the program with a new syndicator. (The ABC show, with Shadoe Stevens replacing Kasem, had been canceled in 1995.) He handed off to Ryan Seacrest in 2004, though he continued with two other shows, "American Top 20" and "American Top 10," until signing off in 2009 -- as always with his trademark line, "Keep your feet on the ground, and keep reaching for the stars."
Kemal Amin Kasem was born in Detroit in 1932. He first tried radio while in high school but found he had a talent for it while serving in Korea with the Army. He was a DJ on the Armed Forces Radio Network.
After stops in several cities, including Flint, Michigan; Buffalo, New York; and San Francisco, he joined KRLA in Los Angeles in 1963, partly in hopes of an acting career. He did earn roles in a number of low-budget movies -- the most famous of which was probably "The Incredible 2-Headed Transplant" (1971) -- but his voice was always his ticket to fame, whether appearing on a Dick Clark-produced TV show, "Shebang," or voicing the character of Shaggy on the cartoon "Scooby-Doo," which premiered in 1969. (He also was the voice of Robin on "Super Friends.")
That voice became ubiquitous. He was NBC's promotional announcer in the late '70s and early '80s, and heard on dozens of commercials.
But "American Top 40" remains his legacy.
"Kasem started the show in 1970, a curious time to start a show about Top 40 mainstream pop, because the format had just been pronounced dead and progressive album-oriented radio was on the rise," wrote Susan Orlean in a 1990 New York Times Magazine profile. "He infused the show with corny reverence for conventional American values exactly when cynicism had become the more fashionable posture."
Kasem attributed his success to that everyday voice.
"It's not a clear-toned announcer's voice," he told the Times. "It's more like the voice of the guy next door.''
Kasem is survived by his second wife, Jean, whom he married in 1985; and four children.

In his final months, Mr. Kasem, who had lived in Beverly Hills, Calif., was at the center of a family legal battle over the terms of his death, pitting his wife, the actress Jean Kasem, against his three adult children from a previous marriage. Ms. Kasem removed her husband from a Santa Monica nursing home on May 7 and took him to stay with friends in Washington State. By court order, he was moved to the hospital on June 1.
Mr. Kasem’s “American Top 40,” which first aired in the summer of 1970, was a weekly four-hour feast of homey sentiment and American optimism that ran headlong into the prevailing spirit of rebellion in the music culture of the day.

The show gave new life to the Top 40 format at a time when the popularity of the 45 r.p.m. record was waning and FM disc jockeys were experimenting with more personal formats, creating playlists from their favorite long-playing album cuts.
Mr. Kasem, instead, featured only the singles that Billboard magazine had ranked as the country’s most popular in the past week, based on its analysis of airplay — a playlist, in effect, based on the national pop consensus.
Building a radio show on the notion that such a consensus existed was considered a risky proposition in that culturally splintered time. As Time magazine put it, “He embraced corniness as Vietnam-era cynicism peaked.” But the format struck a chord.
Only five radio stations carried the debut of “American Top 40” on July 4, 1970. But within a year more than 100 did, and by the mid-1970s it had reached nearly 1,000 outlets “coast to coast,” as Mr. Kasem liked to say, making him one of the best-known D.J.'s in the country.
He had modeled the show, he later told interviewers, on the old NBC radio program “Your Hit Parade” (also known as “The Lucky Strike Hit Parade”). “I thought we’d be around for at least 20 years,” he said. “Because I knew the formula worked.”
“American Top 40” became a mainstay of American radio, offering a crowd-pleasing menu of hits seasoned with Mr. Kasem’s heartfelt readings of listeners’ song dedications, wholesome anecdotes about the lives of the pop stars, and an endless store of solid, if cringe-inducing, pieces of advice, like his touchstone signoff: “Keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars.”
(Not all the dedications were necessarily feel-good, however. A pregnant teenager addressed her boyfriend in prison, for example, and a mother begged her runaway daughter to come home.)
Mr. Kasem also hosted a syndicated television version of the show in the 1980s. But his relationship with “American Top 40” ended in 1988 because of a contract dispute with his syndication company. The next year, he started “Casey’s Top 40,” a competing radio program on another network, bringing most of his old audience there with him.
About 10 years later, after acquiring the rights to the name, he was again hosting a show with the title “American Top 40” (for a time he hosted both that and the competing “Casey’s Top 40”). He ended his three-decade run in 2004, handing the hosting duties to Ryan Seacrest, who continues in that role. Mr. Kasem retired in 2009.
Mr. Kasem, who had a financial interest in his shows, had a net worth estimated by several sources at $80 million. Last year he put his house in the Holmby Hills area of Los Angeles on the market for $42 million.
Rock ’n’ roll was never Mr. Kasem’s passion, he told interviewers. He knew his subject, and kept up with it in a professional way, but when home, he told Billboard, “I find myself just wanting to sit in my office and make it as quiet as possible.”
“If I were doing a real rock show,” he told The New York Times in 1990, “then it would matter to know how I felt about what I was playing.” But, he added, “I’m just counting them down as they appear on the chart, 1 through 40. What really matters is what I say between the songs.”

Between the songs Mr. Kasem managed to herald the newest of the new with a broadcast style that felt comfortingly old. He set the tone with a neighborly but precise 1940s-style diction, honed to amiable perfection in a second career as a voice-over artist. With plain-spoken warmth and a partiality to sentiments and phrases (“coast to coast” and “sweetheart” were his favorites, hands down), his delivery evoked another time.
“Hello again, everybody,” he said to open most of his shows. “I’m Casey Kasem, and welcome to ‘American Top 40.’ I’m all set to count down the 40 most popular songs in the U.S.A.”
When he used biographical teasers to introduce songs (“a high school dropout and a runaway, with a mother who was married six times — coming up,” referring to Cher), Mr. Kasem echoed Paul Harvey on his folksy, long-running news broadcasts. But he told The Times that the technique harked back to his childhood in a Middle Eastern immigrant neighborhood of Detroit.
“I was drawing on the Arabic tradition of storytelling one-upmanship,” he said. “When I was a kid, men would gather in my parents’ living room and tell tales and try to outdo each other. I couldn’t understand the language, but I was fascinated.”
Kemal Amen Kasem was born in Detroit on April 27, 1932. His parents, Amin and Helen Kasem, were Lebanese immigrants who owned a grocery store. After graduating from Wayne State University in Detroit, he worked in local radio, produced broadcasts for the Armed Forces Network during a stint in the Army and landed in Los Angeles, at KRLA, where he developed his trademark of introducing records with historical tidbits about the artists and their songs. For a time he also had local television dance show.
In 1970, along with Don Bustany, a Hollywood movie producer and childhood friend, Mr. Kasem came up with the idea of a countdown radio show modeled after “Your Hit Parade” and proposed it to the syndication company Watermark Inc., which was later bought by ABC Radio Networks. Mr. Kasem had always wanted to be a movie actor, he told interviewers, but never had much success beyond cameo roles in films like “New York, New York” (1977), in which he played a 1940s disc jockey, and “Ghostbusters” (1984), in which he played himself.
His biggest role off the radio was in the TV cartoon series “Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!” as the voice of Shaggy, the canine hero’s goofy companion. In the 1970s and ‘80s his voice was heard on television commercials for Sears, Ford, Chevron and Oscar Mayer.
Following the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982, Mr. Kasem, whose parents belonged to the Druze sect in Lebanon, an offshoot of Islam, became a vocal advocate for Middle East peace and Arab-American causes. In later years he was active in promoting Arab-Israeli dialogue, making personal appearances at mosques and synagogues around the country.
In addition to his wife, who played the tall, blond, dimwitted characterLoretta Tortelli on the sitcom “Cheers,” and their daughter, Liberty, his survivors include his three children from a previous marriage, which ended in divorce: Julie, Michael and Kerri Kasem.
In 2007, after he learned he had Lewy body dementia, Mr. Kasem gave his three eldest children legal authority to act as his health care proxy at whatever point he became unable to make decisions himself. The agreement stipulated that he did not want to be kept alive with “any form of life-sustaining procedures, including nutrition and hydration,” if he lost all cognitive function and was given no hope of recovery. Differences between the three older children and Mr. Kasem’s wife played out in increasingly bitter courtroom clashes in the final months.
Mr. Kasem, with an audience of 10 million listeners in his heyday, made politeness and decorum hallmarks of his broadcast. His courtly voice seemed capable of rendering the most raunchy song titles in appropriate-sounding phonemes, and when not able, to swerve around the problem effortlessly.
He would not say “I Want Your Sex” when that was the title of a 1987 hit song, for instance. Instead, Mr. Kasem introduced that one as “George Michael’s latest.”
Given the audience he imagined for himself, Mr. Kasem could hardly do otherwise. “I picture people in a car, with Mom and Dad in the front seat, a couple of kids in the back seat, and a grandparent as well,” he told Billboard.
In another interview, he said: “I feel good that you can be going to synagogue or church and listen to me, and nobody is going to be embarrassed by the language that I use, the innuendo. Quite frankly, I think we’re good for America.”

As a teenager, I listened to Casey Kasem, but not on American Top 40. Before he came up with the idea of doing a national countdown, he was a local DJ on KRLA, one of the two leading Top 40 stations in Los Angeles, along with KFWB. In the summer of 1963, Pasadena-based KRLA introduced Kasem as an afternoon jock, freshly relocated from KEWB in San Francisco. I was already a devoted fan of the charts, having discovered them just four months earlier, and was impressed with Kasem’s love for music trivia. He had a deeper knowledge of the charts than any DJ I had ever heard and since it was summer and I wasn’t in school, I listened to his show as often as I could.
I remember one afternoon hearing Casey say something that has remained with me for my entire life. He introduced a new song by announcing: “Here’s a group from England that is as popular in their own country as the Four Seasons are in America.” That told me instantly how mega this group must be. Then Casey played “From Me to You” by the Beatles. And that’s how I learned -- six months before “I Want to Hold Your Hand” and the beginning of Beatlemania in the U.S. -- exactly how big the Beatles were.
After seven years on KRLA, Casey went national with American Top 40 on July 4, 1970. It would be another 27 years before I would meet him in person. As Chart Beat columnist for Billboard, I attended the 19th annual Billboard/Airplay Monitor Radio Awards at the Renaissance Resort in Orlando. I was walking through the lobby with Billboard’s Chuck Taylor, who was in charge of the event. Casey was the host for the Awards (and at the gala dinner, a surprised recipient of the conference’s first Lifetime Achievement Award) and he was just arriving, so as representatives of Billboard, we greeted him. To my surprise, Casey knew who I was and seemed happier to meet me than I was to meet him (though believe me, I was thrilled to meet him after years of being a major fan). Casey was genuine and humble in person and I was grateful that I was finally able to let him know how much he meant to me. When I first became obsessed with local radio charts and the national Billboard charts, a part of me felt guilty for spending so much time with these facts and figures and I felt like I was the only person in the world with this secret passion. As a local jock and as the national host of American Top 40, Casey made me feel OK about my hobby, long before I knew it would become the core element of my professional career.
Thanks, Casey. I think I kept my feet on the ground while I was reaching for the stars, and thanks to you it all turned out just fine.

Shadoe Stevens, who took over the American Top 40 mantle from Casey Kasem in 1989, says the late DJ was genuinely the likeable guy you heard on the radio.
"It's a cynical world, and cynicism has become the mark of intellectual sophistication. Somehow everyone has to be hipper than everyone else," Stevens tells The Hollywood Reporter. "He wasn't any of that. He wasn't mean-spirited. He wasn't self-important. He was a genuine, nice man and kind."
Kasem died Sunday at 82.
Stevens says Kasem really meant what he said in his American Top 40 signoff, “Keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars.”
When Stevens moved from Boston to Los Angeles to break into the city's radio scene, he sought Kasem's advice.
"I talked to Casey about how to make that adjustment from the bombastic, over-enthused Top 40 disc jockey to a more realistic thing. He gave me this advice about projection: 'It's not quite a whisper – a little more than a whisper – but less air.' It was a revelation to me that I had to think in terms as something so subtle."
The pair would be friendly for decades – including when Stevens took over American Top 40 in 1989 – but they didn't become true friends until the late 90s when they'd have play dates for their daughters, Liberty Kasem and Chyna Rose Stevens.
He says in addition to being an radio innovator, Kasem had a voice few could match.
"It's unusual a person can be identified completely by his voice. Like Ryan Seacrest – he's really successful, he's good at what he does, but when you're trying to mimic him on Saturday Night Live, what do you do? Casey was very distinct. "

1987, Florida real estate agent Vittoria Holman sued Motley Crue and their concert promoter for hearing loss allegedly incurred at a concert in December 1985. Holman and her daughter had front row seats less than 10 feet (3 meters) from the speakers. The case was settled out of court with the band's insurance company paying Holman over $30,000. (£18,200).

2009, 60-year-old Billy Joel and his third wife, 27-year-old Katie Lee Joel announced that were splitting up after nearly five years of marriage. Joel's nine-year union with model Christie Brinkley ended in 1994. His nine-year marriage to Elizabeth Weber, for whom he wrote 'Just The Way You Are', ended in 1982. It's believed that Billy had a prenuptial agreement to protect the millions his many hits have earned.
2011, A computer hacker who stole songs from Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake, Leona Lewis, Kesha and Mariah Carey during 2009 and 2010 was sentenced to 18 months detention in Germany. A court heard how the teenager, who called himself DJ Stolen, earned more than 15,000 euros (£13,260) by breaking copyright laws and hacking personal information from a number of singers. The 18-year-old used software to steal unpublished songs and then offer them for sale on the internet. Anti-piracy teams in the UK and Germany noticed a growing number of pre-release tracks being leaked much earlier than normal. The teen was also ordered to have therapy for an addiction to the internet.

Art Event Έκθεση Ζωγραφικής Σταμάτης Παπαδήμος
Ο ζωγράφος και γραφίστας Σταμάτης Παπαδήμος μετά την επιτυχημένη συμμετοχή του σε ομαδική έκθεση στην Agora Gallery της Νέας Υόρκης, ταξιδεύει...και έρχεται στο biscotto coffee+ για να παρουσιάσει την ατομική του έκθεση. Όλα τα έργα που βρίσκονται στο biscotto coffee+ διατίθενται προς πώληση. Το έργο με τίτλο THINK ανήκει σε προσωπική συλλογή και παραχωρήθηκε αποκλειστικά για την έκθεση.
Οι εκδηλώσεις «Χαριλιώτικα 2014» διοργανώνονται από τον Κοινωνικό Σύνδεσμο Κατοίκων Χαριλάου σε συνεργασία με τη Θεσσαλονίκη – Ευρωπαϊκή Πρωτεύουσα Νεολαίας 2014 το τριήμερο 20 – 22 Ιουνίου, στο πάρκο Νέας Ελβετίας.
Πρόκειται για ένα Διεθνές Φεστιβάλ Παραδοσιακών και Μοντέρνων Χορών, που διοργανώνεται για 31ησυνεχή χρονιά. Στη φετινή διοργάνωση συμμετέχουν συγκροτήματα από την Αρμενία, τη Βουλγαρία, τη Γεωργία και την Ελλάδα.
Οι εκδηλώσεις αρχίζουν καθημερινά στις 20.00.
