15 secrets airports don’t want travelers to know
- For instance, you don't really need to arrive two hours before your flight — and you may save money by ordering food on the plane rather than at an airport restaurant.
- There is WiFi and it is (probably) free; water is also available for free.
From the high prices at duty-free to the free unadvertised water and WiFi, here are the secrets airports won't tell you.
Your gender can be confusing
If your gender isn't obvious to the TSA, you may get an old-fashioned pat-down as you go through security. This is because as you enter and put your arms above your head for the now-commonplace full body scan, the device operator must tell the machine "male" or "female" so it knows which anatomy to consider as it scans you. If they pick the wrong gender, and the machine sees "parts" it didn't expect, you could get more, ahem, personal attention.
Airport bathroom feedback is received in real time
No bathroom experience will ever be worse than using an outdoor port-a-potty on a hot summer day, but for a long time, airport restrooms were not much better. This is changing, thankfully, and you can do your part to improve airport bathroom cleanliness by providing an instant reaction on smart feedback devices as you leave (after washing your hands thoroughly, of course). At certain airports, like those in the NYC area, that feedback is being received in real time to help get and keep bathrooms clean. By the way, make sure you never do these 18 things on an airplane.
The pleasant conversation may be a test
We don't want to make you overly cynical, but the next time a TSA agent gets chatty with you, it might not be because she finds you fascinating. Instead, it could be a behavior inspection technique. The pleasant conversation may be a subtle test to see if you are a suspicious character.
Eating during the flight may be cheaper than in the airport
If you have an airline credit card, you may be entitled to upwards of a 25 percent discount on food and drink purchased while in flight. The cost of American Airlines's delicious cheese and fruit platter, for instance, drops from an already reasonable $8.99 to a relative steal at $6.74 when you put it on any of their credit cards. This is likely half the price of a comparable meal in or out of the airport!
You don't really need to arrive two hours before your flight
Occasionally it will take hours to clear security, but the majority of the time you don't need nearly that much time at the airport. We think this "helpful" airport recommendation is a ploy to get us eating, drinking, and shopping in the terminal. After all, the longer you're there, the more money you'll spend killing time. Instead, be sure to check in online, only bring a carry-on, be security-ready (skip the belts and jackets, and wear easy-to-remove shoes), and show up a little later than they suggest. Check out these free things to do when you're stuck in the airport.
Taxi rides from the airport may be twice the actual cost of the trip
On a recent trip to Puerto Rico, an airport taxi cost $26 to get into Old San Juan with no traffic, yet an Uber for the reverse drive was a mere $14. If you aren't renting a car the next time you fly, check to see if Uber or Lyft will pick you up at the airport before joining the taxi queue.
Checking your bag at the gate might be free
You may have the opportunity to gate-check your bag for free. Listen for a "we expect a full flight and will run out of overhead bin space" message at the gate, and then take them up on the opportunity for a complimentary checked bag to your final destination.
There is WiFi and it is (probably) free
There's still the stray airport with the audacity to charge for the privilege of hopping onto their slow WiFi network, but most airports offer complimentary WiFi nowadays. Log on for free and finish downloading those Netflix show episodes before you take off! Check out these things your airplane pilot won't tell you.
Water is free
Airport shops would prefer that you fork over as much as $5 for a disposable plastic bottle of water. Avoid the charge by bringing an empty bottle through security, and look for the reusable water refill stations positioned near the restrooms and old-fashioned water fountains at nearly all major airports.
You may have access to a private airport lounge
There won't be flashing lights inviting you in, but even without your name on the marquee, your credit card(s) may come with the perk of opening the door to free airport lounge access. Don't be afraid to pop in and ask. You may just find yourself in a calm, quiet oasis with free food and drink before your next flight. Here are things you should never do at the airport.
You're being lured into the shops from a seated position
It's not exactly a trap, but it is a clever trick: The reason the most comfortable seats—from rocking chairs to plush sofas— are near the airport retail zones is because you are being lured into the shops from a seated position. This practice is called "revenue seating"; the goal is to get you to whip out your credit card during the "golden hour" (the first 60 minutes after you have cleared security).
Security isn't as secure as you think
Understaffed and overworked TSA employees staring at a screen for too long and scanning technology that is likely already out of date means that airport security isn't as secure as you think (and hope) that it is. Here are some more things your TSA security agent isn't telling you.
Your ETA includes more than just flying time
If you've noticed how the total announced flying time doesn't add up to the published ETA when you booked the flight, here's the reason: The estimated arrival time includes wiggle room for taxiing to and from the runway and other potential small delays. It also allows pilots to boast about getting you in ahead of schedule.
The duty may be free but the goods aren't always cheaper
The bright lights and shelves full of products in the duty-free shops are an enticing way to burn the hours before a flight or during a long layover. Don't be fooled: The prices of duty-free beverages, chocolates, and perfumes are often still more expensive than what you'll pay at home!
The currency exchange rates are atrocious
Frequent fliers know to never swap currency at the airport. The exchange rates are outrageously tilted in the house's favor; you will lose a lot of money in the deal. Instead, either get your foreign currency from your hometown bank or, better yet, simply use your ATM card in a fee-free machine once you reach your final foreign destination.

Γιατί να πας στη θάλασσα όταν μπορείς να είσαι κάτω από τη θάλασσα;

CARBON BEACH, LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA
Τα πραγματικά επίχρυσα φιλέτα γης στο Malibu είναι όσα βρίσκονται στη λωρίδα που χωρίζει τη διάσημη λεωφόρο State Route 1 (Pacific Coast Highway) από τις αμμουδιές του Ειρηνικού, εκεί που βίσκονται κάποιες από τις πιο φημισμένες παραλίες όπως οι Surfrider Beach, Westward Beach, Escondido Beach, Paradise Cove, Point Dume, Pirates Cove, Zuma Beach, Trancas και Encinal Bluffs.

Here's why only some members of the royal family are allowed to wear tiaras and crowns
- Crowns and tiaras are undoubtedly the first thing that come to mind when we think of royal fashion.
- Kate Middleton, Meghan Markle, and Princess Eugenie all wore tiaras for their weddings, while Queen Elizabeth II was spotted wearing a crown years before she became monarch.
- However, there are rules surrounding which members of the royal family are allowed to wear one — and when and where they're allowed to wear it.
- We asked royal experts to break down the etiquette surrounding the use of tiaras and crowns in the royal family.
It's easy to assume that tiaras and crowns are reserved for royalty, but there are even rules surrounding which members of the royal family are allowed to wear one — and when and where they're allowed to wear it.
Kate Middleton has been spotted wearing tiaras many times since she married Prince William in 2011, and Meghan Markle andPrincess Eugenie both wore tiaras borrowed from the Queen on their wedding days — but this doesn't mean they can sport one any time they please.
Meanwhile, despite popular belief, it's not just the Queen who is allowed to wear a crown.
You have to be married or hold a certain royal title to wear a tiara
According to etiquette expert and former royal butler Grant Harrold, there are two types of women who can wear tiaras: those who are married, and those who are born princesses.
Harrold, a director at the Royal School of Etiquette, told INSIDER: 'Traditionally, tiaras are a sign of marriage. So typically they could be worn by a bride on her wedding day, or after she is married, she can wear one to any black tie event.
"Single ladies don't typically wear tiaras, unless they are born into the Royal Family as a princess."
Therefore, if the royals are following this tradition, those who married into the family, such as Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle, are entitled to wear one.
Middleton was first seen wearing a tiara at her wedding to Prince William in 2011. Since then, she's been photographed wearing them on multiple occasions.
Traditionally, single royals who weren't born with the title of princess don't wear a tiara.
Lady Gabriella Windsor is the daughter of Prince Michael of Kent, the first cousin of the Queen. But despite being born the daughter of a prince, Gabriella was not given the title of a princess.
The royal has never been photographed wearing a tiara before, which could mean this rule still holds true. However, we cannot be certain how much weight these older traditions hold, as they have never been confirmed by a member of the family.
Lady Gabriella is due to have her own royal wedding to Thomas Kingston in May, so it'll become clear whether the rules are still strict.
Royals can only wear tiaras after a certain time of day
Simply being married or being a princess doesn't give royal ladies free rein to wear tiaras whenever they please. They must only be worn at a particular time and place, according to royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams, former editor of "The International Who's Who."
Fitzwilliams told INSIDER: "Tradition dictates that tiaras are not worn before 6 p.m., though weddings are an exception. They are worn on formal white tie events and state occasions such as state banquets. The decision on whether to wear a tiara is linked to the dress code of a particular event and also to personal preference."
This seems to be a tradition the royals are following through on, as other than at her wedding Middleton has only ever worn a tiara sparingly, and always at white tie events.
She made headlines after wearing Queen Mary's Lover's Knot tiara — previously owned by Princess Diana — to a state banquet at Buckingham Palace in 2018.
Anyone in the royal family can wear a crown, but they are often saved for one particular event
Many believe that the Queen is the only royal who is allowed to wear a crown.
However, other royals are allowed to wear coronets, which is a small crown often worn at a coronation — and they don't have to be the monarch to do it. In fact, Her Majesty wore one long before she became Queen.

In the 1937 photo below, the newly crowned King George VI and the Queen Mother both wore crowns, alongside Princess Margaret and our future Queen, the then-titled Princess Elizabeth, who both wore coronets.
Similarly, Prince Charles was spotted wearing a gold coronet during his investiture in 1969.
The newly-titled Prince of Wales was photographed taking a carriage ride with the Queen after the ceremony at Caermarfon Castle.
Despite celebrating the 50th anniversary of his investiture earlier this month, Charles has not worn a crown since.
"While princesses can wear tiaras, dukes and earls can wear coronets. You can see them all wearing them in pictures of the Queen's coronation — all the males were wearing them," Harrold explained.
"From what I know, male aristocracy only wear coronets at coronations. Prince Charles hasn't worn the golden coronet since his investiture in 1969."
So that settles it — while you may have assumed royals can wear crowns or tiaras without limitation, like everything, there is a set time, place, and occasion.

Billy Joel Marries His Uptown Girl
1985Billy Joel marries the "Uptown Girl" Christie Brinkley. They remain married for nine years.
Two years after Brinkley teaches dance steps to a begrudging Joel on the set of his "Uptown Girl" music video, which cast him as a mechanic opposite Brinkley as the title character, the singer and the supermodel tie the knot aboard a yacht in New York Harbor. It's the second marriage for both: Joel was previously wed to Elizabeth Weber Small from 1973 to 1982, while Brinkley was married to French artist Jean-François Allaux from 1973 to 1981.
Brinkley, who stole Joel's heart from his othersupermodel girlfriend Elle Macpherson, will appear in several more of her husband's videos, including "Keeping The Faith,""All About Soul,""The River Of Dreams,""A Matter Of Trust," and "Leningrad." 25η Μαρτίου: Γιατί τρώμε μπακαλιάρο σκορδαλιά;
Ο μπακαλιάρος με τη συνοδεία σκορδαλιάς είναι το εθνικό φαγητό μας κατά τον εορτασμό της 25ης Μαρτίου και δεν λείπει από κανένα οικογενειακό τραπέζι. Πώς προέκυψε, όμως, το έθιμο αυτό και γιατί καθιερώθηκε;
Πώς προέκυψε, όμως, το έθιμο αυτό και γιατί καθιερώθηκε;

Μαρία Κωνσταντινίδου, Life Coach
