Windmills of Your Mind composer Michel Legrand dies aged 86
French Oscar-winning composer and jazz pianist Michel Legrand has died in Paris aged 86, his spokesman has said.
During a career spanning more than 50 years, Legrand wrote over 200 film and TV scores, as well as songs.
In 1968, he won his first Oscar for the song The Windmills of Your Mind from The Thomas Crown Affair film.
Two more Oscars followed in 1971 and 1983 for the best original scores in Summer of '42 and Yentl films respectively.
In the 1960s, he collaborated with French new wave director Jacques Demy on The Umbrellas of Cherbourg - the work which opened the door for Legrand to Hollywood.
The hit song The Windmills Of Your Mind was later covered by a number of artists including Dusty Springfield.
Legrand - who was known for his often jazz-tinged music - collaborated with such stars as Miles Davies, Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra and Edith Piaf among others.
He had planned to give concerts in Paris in April, the AFP news agency reports.
Legrand was born in Paris in 1932. He came from a musical family: his father was a conductor, as was his maternal uncle.

Eurovision Song Contest 2019: BBC reveals this year's hopefuls
Six contestants will battle it out to represent the UK at the Eurovision Song Contest in Israel this May.
The hopefuls, mostly drawn from the ranks of TV reality shows, were unveiled on BBC Radio 2 on Wednesday.
They include Michael Rice, who won BBC singing competition All Together Now last year, and 2017 X Factor competitor Holly Tandy.
Unusually, the six contestants share three songs - each putting their own spin on one of the potential entries.
The public will choose who goes through to the final in a live TV show, Eurovision: You Decide, on Friday, 8 February.
Last year, the UK fared particularly badly - with singer SuRie finishing 24th out of 26.
Her performance was interrupted by a stage invader, who grabbed her microphone and shouted slogans about the media.
The contest was eventually won by Israeli singer Netta with her quirky song Toy, which encouraged people to celebrate their differences.
Here's a guide to the UK's hopefuls for Tel Aviv in 2019.
Bigger Than Us sung by Holly Tandy and Michael Rice
Who are they? Holly Tandy, from Barnsley, South Yorkshire, took part in The X Factor in 2017 when she was just 16. Nicole Scherzinger praised her "big voice", but she struggled in the live shows, eventually finishing seventh. She has a nice hat.
Hartlepool busker Michael Rice won All Together Now - that's the singing contest with 100 judges (and Geri Halliwell) - in 2018. He was working on his debut single when the opportunity to enter Eurovision came along.
Is the song any good? Kind of. It's a cliche-ridden love ballad whose verses owe a sizeable melodic debt to Bonnie Raitt's infinitely superior I Can't Make You Love Me.
How do the two versions differ? Michael has made it into a piano ballad that showcases his soulful vocals. It goes a bit haywire at the end with an OTT gospel choir and an unnecessary key change.
Holly's version is more up-tempo with a pleasant acoustic guitar and that weird "ghost cat" noise that's been on every pop single since Justin Bieber's What Do You Mean. For good measure, she's thrown in a handclap-assisted breakdown for the final chorus, which could play well in front of an audience.
Who wrote it? The four writers include Eurovision veterans Laurell Barker and Jonas Thander - who also played saxophone on Taylor Swift's Shake It Off.
Key lyric: "I can feel the Universe when I'm feeling you breathe."
The verdict: Cinq points.
Freaks by Jordan Clarke and Maid
Who are they? Jordan Clarke competed in series seven of Britain's Got Talent as part of the band Luminites, reaching the semi-final; and later played with short-lived pop band Chasing Midnight. He's been making music solo since they split.
Maid are a newly-formed girl group consisting of the ornately-named Miracle Chance, Kat Kleve and Blythe Jandoo. They met at drama school and have stage credits including Starlight Express, The Wizard of Oz and The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Blythe will also appear in Guy Ritchie's live-action remake of Aladdin later this year.
What about the song? Freaks picks up on the pop trend of celebrating people's differences - with the twist that the lyrics are totally bananas. "I don't see the difference between me, you, your, tu or moi, vous," it observes, obliterating all the grammar lessons we were taught in French class.
How do the two versions differ? Jordan gives Freaks a pop twist with sprightly piano chords and a chugging beat that recalls Take That's Shine. Your mum will like it.
Maid describe their version as "ethereal and dark" - and they deliver some impressive harmonies. But the arrangement is too intricate for a Eurovision audience who prefer their songs to come with clucking chickens.
Who wrote it? This one has a good pedigree: Rick Parkhouse and George Tizzard have written and produced songs for Take That, Cheryl, James Arthur, 5 Seconds of Summer and (this is not a joke) Green Day.
Key lyric: It's a toss-up between "I've been locked in a locker, I was picked last at soccer" and "We could all be disciples, and we'll write our own bibles".
The verdict: Deux points
Sweet Lies by Kerrie-Anne and Anisa
Who are they? Former teacher Kerrie-Anne Phillips took part in The X Factor in 2015. She was mentored by Simon Cowell, but was eliminated at the judges' houses stage.
Anisa Moghaddam was named by the BBC Asian Network as one of its Future Sounds in 2016. She's since supported Ne-Yo, Brandy and James Arthur in concert and recorded a track, Music, with Wretch 32.
What about the song? Sweet Lies finds Anisa and Kerrie-Anne papering over the cracks of a crumbling relationship.
How have they interpreted it? Kerrie-Anne takes the heartbreak and turns it into a Gloria Gaynor-style dance anthem full of house piano and bass drops.
Anisa goes in the opposite direction, delivering a stripped-back ballad that clearly draws inspiration from Alicia Keys and Lauryn Hill.
Who wrote it? Among the song's three writers is Lise Cabble, whose song Only Teardrops helped Denmark's Emmelie de Forest win Eurovision 2013.
Key lyric: "Our love is paper thin/I need you skin to skin."
The verdict: Dix points.

France crown Bilal Hassani winner of Destination Eurovision 2019
Yesterday saw the final of France’s Eurovision National Final where 8 songs competed for the honour of representing the gallic nation in Tel Aviv. The Voice Kids alum ultimately won the ticket to Israel with his song Roi
After two weeks of pre-qualifying rounds, yesterday we were treated to the final 8 songs to make it into the final of Destination Eurovision. The competition became a two-horse race when runaway semi final winners Seemone and Bilal Hassani went up against each other for the title in Paris, and in this race the androgynous singer came out victorious.
Tonight was the night for all of the artists to update and polish off their performances for Tel Aviv and for the most, they have done well to give the audience a great show. We delved into boxes, technicolour 2D sets and childhood memories. As in the semi-finals each performer sang their potential Eurovision entry and a classic Eurovision song for the audience and the French public.
For the final, everything was of course bigger and better and this meant that the international jury was larger. Instead of 5 jurors, the final included a 10 person Jury, including Rona Nishliu (Albania 2012), Alex Panayi (Cyprus 1995 & 2000) and Doron Medalie (Eurovision 2019 winning songwriter for Israel).
After some suspect voting from the international jury, Bilal came from 5th place to first with the help of the French public recieving more than double the televotes of his nearest competitor Chimene Badi.
The Show
Destination Eurovision started with all eight acts giving a rendition of 2014 Eurovision winner Rise Like A Pheonix, was this sign of things to come?
All performers brought their unique style to the song and mostly to great response from the audience in the studio. In great French style, we didn’t wait long before our first entry of the night as Chimene Badi kicked off the show.
Chimene Badi – La-Haut
We were treated to Chimene’s version of 1988 Eurovision winner Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi by Céline Dion. Chimene was as always vocally strong and a great performer and she gave a confident rendition of the power ballad.
He Eurovision entry performance had a few significant differences in its presentation, starting off in the box with the LED projection screens, Chimene is this time joined by a male dancer who interacts with her, who then takes over the use of the box as Chimene leaves and is far less static in her performance. It really elevated the performance of a standard song making it more interesting and dynamic.
Silvan Areg – Allez Leur Dire
Silvan covered the controversial Eurovision 1991 French class Le Dernier Qui a Parle Qui a Raison, his voice may have been a little harsh for some Eurovision die-hards, but he is a talented and accomplished performer.
Unknown to myself, Silvan’s song title was changed from Le Petit Nicolas to Allez Leur Dire although this wasn’t the biggest difference in his entry. We were back in his animated world, but just like Dorothy entering Oz, we were welcomed into a technicolour version of this world. The performance looked and felt more professional, camera shots were tightened and Silvan worked the stage far much better. I still feel this could be a unique and memorable Eurovision performance. I was just waiting for Mary Poppins to join him in a song and dance on the bridge, unfortunately this never happened.
The Divaz- La Voix d’aretha
The trio decided to take on Eurovision’s most famous winner, ABBA’s Waterloo. As performers they are all strong individually as well a unit, yet this was not a great performance, the vocals seem to be a little off although I feel this may have been a problem with the sound rather than the singers.
Their Eurovision entry performance was completely the same, they showed off their strong vocals, this time with no hiccups at all. They stood on top of their shimmering LED plinth taking to the middle at certain points to take the lead vocals. The only difference was the outfits, they decided to become a little more edgy with more interesting hair and wearing pink leather jackets over their dresses, emblazoned on the back with the word Diva. This was such a tight performance and what cant be taken away from them is how good they are as an act. The Panel was asked after the first four performances who was their favourite and The Divaz were picked by both Christophe and Andre.
Emmanuel Moire – La Promesse
From one Swedish win, to the Swedish win that cemented the Scandanavian country as a Eurovision powerhouse, Emmanuel gave us a piano cover of Loreen’s Euphoria.
Emmanuels performance had very little change in the final. The dancers were still their, they still stripped him of his blazer, arms first and he interacted well with the crowd. This is a competent performance if a little dull.
Doutson – Sois un bon fils
We get Doutson’s version of J’ai Cherche, it was a rather flat performance and he looked a little uncomfortable singing the song, but this is not his style of music and he gave it a good try.
His Eurovision entry performance was very much the same, including 4 backing dancers and the same young boy who performed with him in the semi final. It was a good performance and it showed how much more comfortable he is at singing his own music.
After Doutsons performance, we went to the green room for one of the many visits of the night, this being notable for the guest they interviewed. France’s last Eurovision winner, Marie Myriam joined the green room host to talk about her time at Eurovision and this set up well the next Eurovision cover version from Seemone.
Seemone – Tous Les Deux
After Marie finished her interview we were straight into Seemone’s cover of L’oiseau et L’Enfant, a rather predictable choice for her, but she performed it impeccably.
Tous les Deux, another performance with no change to its semi final version although of all entries, this is the one that needed no changes at all. The song is stunning and sang incredibly well, if anything was added or taken away it would have destroyed the performance.
Bilal Hassani – Roi
Bilal took on what is possibly the most popular Eurovision song of the moment, Eleni Foureira’s Fuego, the song that gave Cyprus its best ever result (second) in Lisbon last year. Bilal’s vocals on this were very good and he seemed to really enjoy the performance.
The performance of his Eurovision entry has changed somewhat, instead of four backing dancers, we have Bilal start off alone with photos of himself as a child in the background. He is then joined by two backing dancers for the last minute of the song. The vocals were so much better than the semi-final and the performance was more professional.
Aysat – Comme Une Grande
Covering Alexander Rybak’s Fairytale, Aysat gave a good if a little uninteresting performance, yet her vocals are very good.
Her Eurovision entry performance was the least changed of the night, she had the same dancers, stage and by the look of it the same outfit. It was a carbon copy of the first performance, which isn’t a bad thing. It was a confident and assured performance and certainly got the audience in the mood to party. A great end to the performances.
At this point in the show with all the songs having been performed and waiting for the results, if the audience is anything to go by then Bilal Hassani will win by a landslide as everytime they hear Bilal’s name they go absolutely crazy.
As the phone lines closed, Madame Monsieur were then invited back to perform their Destination Eurovision 2018 winner Mercy.

Michael Jackson Catches Fire
1984At the peak of his popularity, Michael Jackson films an ad for Pepsi that goes horribly wrong when some stray pyro sets his hair on fire.
With Thriller topping charts around the world, Michael Jackson is on fire, figuratively speaking, but things really heat up during a commercial shoot at the Los Angeles Shrine Auditorium. With thousands of fans watching, Jackson dances onstage to the beat of "Billie Jean," reworked especially for the Pepsi ad, as it lights up with a flash of premature pyrotechnics.
So dazzling is the scene that no one notices the King of Pop's hair and jacket aflame until he lets out a frantic shout. Miko Brando, a security aide who is also the son of actor Marlon Brando, rushes to Jackson's side and extinguishes the fire by giving him a bear hug and running his fingers through the singer's hair. Still wearing his signature jewel-encrusted glove, he's rushed by ambulance to Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre and is swiftly transferred to Brotman Medical Center's burn unit. Despite the media's claims that he's in serious condition, Jackson is quite comfortable during his stay at the facility, where doctors treat second-and third-degree burns to his scalp and the staff screens his favorite movie, Close Encounters of the Third Kind. He discharges himself the next day.
The ill-fated shoot was part of a $5 million endorsement with PepsiCo, a landmark advertising deal that launched the company's "New Generation" campaign in hopes of luring a youthful demographic to the brand. In exchange, the deal included sponsorship for The Jacksons' upcoming Victory Tour, with the "Billie Jean" singer joining his brothers to promote their latest album, Victory. The contract, however, didn't cover medical costs for errant fireworks.
The company pays out another $1.5 million to settle with Jackson, who donates the settlement to Brotman, where he returns for scalp repair surgery. Soon after, the hospital unveils its Michael Jackson Burn Center and establishes a burn fund that will finance reconstructive surgery for burn victims. But the honor is short-lived: In 1987 the struggling hospital is forced to close the 23-bed burn center. Meanwhile, Jackson reunites with Pepsi for a $10 million campaign to support his worldwide Bad Tour. Celebrity endorsements become an industry standard, and are especially lucrative for pop stars who make the most of multi-faceted marketing campaigns that offer major advertising and foot the bill for costly tours. Pepsi continues to attract top acts in the coming decades, including Madonna, Beyoncéand Britney Spears.
