Ανακοίνωση του Αντιδημάρχου Τεχνικών Έργων, Περιβάλλοντος και Καθαριότητας

Συνεχείς αυτοψίες και επιτόπιους ελέγχους διενεργούν το τελευταίο χρονικό διάστημα, κατ’ εφαρμογή της ισχύουσας νομοθεσίας, οι αρμόδιες τεχνικές υπηρεσίες του Δήμου Θεσσαλονίκης στις περιοχές στις οποίες βρίσκονται σε εξέλιξη ή έχουν ολοκληρωθεί εργασίες εκσκαφής, για τις ανάγκες των Οργανισμών Κοινής Ωφελείας ή τη διέλευση δικτύων ηλεκτρικών επικοινωνιών (οπτικές ίνες) και την τοποθέτηση ΚΑΦΑΟ.

Τα αιτήματα για χορήγηση δικαιώματος διέλευσης δικτύων ηλεκτρονικών επικοινωνιών και για άδεια εκτέλεσης εργασιών έχουν αυξηθεί κατακόρυφα τα τελευταία χρόνια, λόγω της αντίστοιχης αύξησης του αριθμού των εταιριών – παρόχων, που δραστηριοποιούνται πλέον στην αγορά.

Επισημαίνεται ότι τους πρώτους εννέα μήνες του 2018 ο Δήμος Θεσσαλονίκης παραχώρησε συνολικά 2.820 άδειες εκσκαφής σε Οργανισμούς Κοινής Ωφελείας και  εταιρίες τηλεπικοινωνιών (εκ των οποίων οι 80 αφορούσαν την τοποθέτηση ΚΑΦΑΟ). Κατά το ίδιο διάστημα, ο Δήμος απέστειλε 665 επιστολές σε Οργανισμούς Κοινής Ωφελείας και εταιρίες-παρόχους, καλώντας τους να προχωρήσουν στην άμεση αποκατάσταση κακοτεχνιών και παραλείψεων, που διαπιστώθηκαν μετά από αυτοψίες αρμοδίων τεχνικών υπαλλήλων του Δήμου καθ’ όλη τη διάρκεια εκτέλεσης των εργασιών.

Να διευκρινιστεί ότι σύμφωνα με την κείμενη νομοθεσία, ο πάροχος είναι υπεύθυνος για την πλήρη αποκατάσταση του χώρου εκτέλεσης εργασιών. Εάν διαπιστωθούν ατέλειες στην αποκατάσταση (π.χ. βαθουλώματα, λακκούβες κ.ά.), ο πάροχος υποχρεούται άμεσα να επαναλάβει τις αναγκαίες εργασίες και εάν δεν ανταποκριθεί, τότε ο Δήμος μπορεί να προβεί στην απαραίτητη αποκατάσταση με καταλογισμό σε βάρος του παρόχου.

Υπογραμμίζεται ακόμη ότι προϋπόθεση για να εξασφαλιστεί η απαραίτητη άδεια εκσκαφής αποτελεί η υποχρέωση του εκάστοτε ενδιαφερόμενου οργανισμού ή  εταιρίας να έχει καταθέσει σε πρότερο χρόνο εγγυητική επιστολή καλής εκτέλεσης εργασιών. Σε περίπτωση μη ορθής ή πλημμελούς εκπλήρωσης του έργου -όπως προβλέπεται από τις ισχύουσες Πρότυπες Τεχνικές Προδιαγραφές της Γενικής Γραμματείας Δημοσίων Έργων του Υπουργείου  Υποδομών, Μεταφορών και Δικτύων- η εγγυητική αυτή επιστολή καταπίπτει υπέρ του Δήμου Θεσσαλονίκης, κατόπιν έγγραφης ειδοποίησης προς την εγγυήτρια τράπεζα και τον πάροχο. Ο Δήμος έχει επανειλημμένα ζητήσει αύξηση του ποσού των εγγυητικών επιστολών από τους φορείς και παρόχους, ώστε να διασφαλίζεται η έντεχνη εκτέλεση του έργου.

Γεγονός είναι ότι τα ίδια προβλήματα προϋπήρχαν, έχουν όμως ενταθεί εξαιτίας του εκσυγχρονισμού και της ανάπτυξης νέων δικτύων των οργανισμών και των εταιρειών, τόσο για όσον αφορά στις οπτικές ίνες, όσο και στα ΚΑΦΑΟ. Το τελευταίο διάστημα, ωστόσο, το θεσμικό πλαίσιο και οι κατευθύνσεις του Υπουργείου Ανάπτυξης για αδειοδότηση εγκατάστασης οπτικών ινών δίδονται κατά προτεραιότητα, γεγονός που δυσχεραίνει τη δυνατότητα παρέμβασης του Δήμου. Είναι χαρακτηριστικό ότι με την εγκατάσταση των δικτύων ανακύπτουν και ιδιαίτερα προβλήματα ως προς τη χωροθέτηση των ΚΑΦΑΟ που τοποθετούνται πάνω σε πεζοδρόμια, προς εξυπηρέτηση των παρόχων, χωρίς να δίνεται δυνατότητα παρέμβασης.

Ο Δήμος Θεσσαλονίκης διευκρινίζει ότι υποχρεούται να προβεί στις απαραίτητες εγκρίσεις, λόγω του ισχύοντος νομοθετικού πλαισίου και εξαιτίας της συνεχιζόμενης πίεσης των οργανισμών και των εταιριών, που επικαλούνται την άμεση αναγκαιότητα των συγκεκριμένων έργων. Ενδεικτικά επισημαίνεται ότι για τους 12 μήνες του 2014 οι άδειες εκσκαφής ανήλθαν σε 2.520 και οι επιστολές για αποκατάσταση κακοτεχνιών και ατελείς εργασίες, σε 718. Το συμπέρασμα που προκύπτει είναι τα προβλήματα που συναντούμε σήμερα προϋπήρχαν και προκύπτουν πάντα λόγω του ισχύοντος θεσμικού πλαισίου. Μόνο η ουσιαστική μεταφορά αρμοδιοτήτων στους ΟΤΑ μπορεί να σταθεί ικανή να επιλύσει το πρόβλημα.

“Τα Ανοιχτά Σχολεία πηγαίνουν Βαφοπούλειο” – Συνάντηση ενημέρωσης για το πρόγραμμα “Ανοιχτά Σχολεία στη Γειτονιά”

Η Διεύθυνση Εκπαίδευσης και Αθλητισμού του Δήμου Θεσσαλονίκης και η Creativity Platform σας προσκαλούν την Τετάρτη 17 Οκτωβρίου 2018, στις 18.00, στο Βαφοπούλειο Πνευματικό Κέντρο Θεσσαλονίκης, σε μια ανοιχτή δίωρη συνάντηση, για να γνωρίσετε από κοντά το πρόγραμμα «Ανοιχτά Σχολεία στη Γειτονιά» και να ενημερωθείτε σχετικά με την επικείμενη κατάθεση προτάσεων του δεύτερου Ανοιχτού Καλέσματος Υποβολής Προτάσεων για Προγράμματα και Δράσεις.

Κατά τη διάρκεια του πρώτου σκέλους της συνάντησης, θα πραγματοποιηθεί παρουσίαση του προγράμματος αναφορικά με το όραμα και τους στόχους, καθώς και τη μέχρι τώρα υλοποίησή του στα σχολεία και στις γειτονιές του Δήμου Θεσσαλονίκης. Παράλληλα, οι πολίτες θα ενημερωθούν για τα προγράμματα και τις δράσεις  που υλοποιούνται εντός των έξι (6) σχολικών αυλών, αλλά και για τον τρόπο συμμετοχής σε αυτά.

Στο δεύτερο μέρος της συνάντησης, θα παρουσιαστούν τα τεχνικά και ποιοτικά χαρακτηριστικά της αίτησης, καθώς και τα κριτήρια για την επιλεξιμότητα των πιθανών αιτηθέντων.

Το Ανοιχτό Κάλεσμα Υποβολής Προτάσεων για Προγράμματα και Δράσεις απευθύνεται σε φορείς, ομάδες και επαγγελματίες που ενδιαφέρονται να δραστηριοποιηθούν μέσω εκπαιδευτικών, ψυχαγωγικών και αθλητικών δραστηριοτήτων εντός των έξι Ανοιχτών Σχολείων, απαντώντας στις ανάγκες τόσο των έξι σχολείων όσο και της γειτονιάς.

Να σημειωθεί ότι η παρουσία των ενδιαφερόμενων στην ενημερωτική συνάντηση είναι καίριας σημασίας για την κατανόηση του πλαισίου του προγράμματος και των κριτηρίων επιλογής των προτάσεων, και θα αποτελέσει θετικό συντελεστή κατά τη διαδικασία επιλογής συνεργατών.

Το πρόγραμμα «Ανοιχτά Σχολεία στη Γειτονιά» είναι μια πρωτοβουλία της Διεύθυνσης Εκπαίδευσης και Αθλητισμού του Δήμου Θεσσαλονίκης σε συνεργασία με την Creativity Platform και αποκλειστικό δωρητή το Ίδρυμα Σταύρος Νιάρχος. Σκοπός του προγράμματος είναι να λειτουργούν τα σχολεία ως πυρήνες ανάπτυξης της ποιότητας ζωής και της έννοιας της «κοινότητας» της κάθε γειτονιάς, σαν κοινός χώρος συνάντησης, συνεργασίας, παιχνιδιού, άθλησης και ψυχαγωγίας.

Τη διοργάνωση της εκδήλωσης αναλαμβάνει η ομάδα συντονισμού και διαχείρισης του προγράμματος, ΑΜΚΕ Creativity Platform, σε συνδιοργάνωση με το Βαφοπούλειο Πνευματικό Κέντρο του Δήμου Θεσσαλονίκης και την υποστήριξη της Αντιδημαρχίας Εκπαίδευσης και Αθλητισμού.

Η Θεσσαλονίκη επενδύει στη γαστρονομία της

Την ανάδειξη της γαστρονομίας της πόλης και των τοπικών προϊόντων μέσα από διάφορες δράσεις επιχειρεί τα τελευταία χρόνια ο Δήμος Θεσσαλονίκης, με στόχο την ανάπτυξη του γαστρονομικού τουρισμού.
Πλούσια σε γεύσεις, όσο και η ιστορία της, η Θεσσαλονίκη αποτελεί σημείο αναφοράς για τους λάτρεις της ελληνικής κουζίνας και παράδοσης, ενώ έχει καταφέρει να αναγνωριστεί διεθνώς και να χαρακτηριστεί ακόμα και γαστρονομική πρωτεύουσα της Ελλάδας.
Το Thessaloniki Food Festival, εδώ και οκτώ χρόνια, με τις ποικίλες δράσεις του, λειτουργεί ως όχημα για την ανάδειξη της Θεσσαλονίκης ως γαστρονομικό προορισμό. Μετά το επιτυχημένο, 1st Thessaloniki Street Food Festival –Athen’s Edition, με 15.000 επισκέπτες, πέρσι τον Οκτώβριο, έρχεται σε λίγες μέρες το 2nd Thessaloniki Street Food Festival– Athen’s Edition με αντιπροσωπευτικές γεύσεις της σύγχρονης γαστρονομίας της πόλης μας, που θα «ταξιδέψουν» το κοινό και τους τουρίστες της πρωτεύουσας στη Θεσσαλονίκη.
Περίπου 20 επιχειρήσεις εστίασης από τη Θεσσαλονίκη, οι οποίες έχουν διακριθεί για την ποιότητα και την πρωτοτυπία τους, θα στήσουν προσεγμένες και καλόγουστες κατασκευές στην Πλατεία Κοτζιά στην Αθήνα, στις 12,13 και 14 Οκτωβρίου .
H προβολή της γαστρονομίας της πόλης μας στην Αθήνα , θα κορυφωθεί με την παρουσίαση της “Σύγχρονης γαστρονομίας της Θεσσαλονίκης, από τους τρεις chef ambassadors 2018 και των τοπικών προϊόντων-Thessaloniki Food Basket”, την Κυριακή 14 Οκτωβρίου στην αίθουσα του εστιατορίου CTC – Restaurant urban Gastronomy.
Οι Thessaloniki Chef Ambassadors για το 2018 είναι οι: Δημήτρης Τασιούλας, ιδιοκτήτης του εστιατορίου Thria, Αντώνης Μουστάκης του εστιατορίου Extravaganza και Λάμπρος Ρώσσιος του εστιατορίου Μαιτρ και Μαργαρίτα.
Kαλεσμένοι του 2nd Thessaloniki Food Festival– Athen’s Edition θα είναι food and travel δημοσιογράφοι και bloggers της πρωτεύουσας καθώς και εκπρόσωποι τουριστικών φορέων. Τους καλεσμένους θα υποδεχτεί ο Αντιδήμαρχος Τουριστικής Ανάπτυξης και Διεθνών Σχέσεων του Δήμου Θεσσαλονίκης, Σπύρος Πέγκας.

Ενημερωτικές συναντήσεις για οδηγίες αυτοπροστασίας σε καταστάσεις έκτακτης ανάγκης

Το Αυτοτελές Τμήμα Πολιτικής Προστασίας του Δήμου Θεσσαλονίκης οργανώνει θεματικές συναντήσεις με στόχο την ενημέρωση των δημοτών για οδηγίες αυτοπροστασίας σε καταστάσεις έκτακτης ανάγκης (σεισμός, χιονοπτώσεις, πλημμύρες, δασικές πυρκαγιές κλπ).

Οι συναντήσεις θα πραγματοποιούνται ανά Δημοτική Κοινότητα με ελεύθερη είσοδο, κάθε Τετάρτη και ώρα 18.00, με το ακόλουθο πρόγραμμα :

Διήμερη εκδήλωση ενημέρωσης και πρόληψης για τον καρκίνο του μαστού

Διήμερη εκδήλωση ανοιχτή στο κοινό, με θέμα «ΕΝΗΜΕΡΩΣΗ ΚΑΙ ΠΡΟΛΗΨΗ ΓΙΑ ΤΟΝ ΚΑΡΚΙΝΟ ΤΟΥ ΜΑΣΤΟΥ», θα πραγματοποιηθεί το Σάββατο  13 και την Κυριακή 14 Οκτωβρίου 2018, στην αίθουσα Πολλαπλών Χρήσεων ‘’Μ. Αναγνωστάκης’’.

Η εκδήλωση διοργανώνεται στο πλαίσιο ενημέρωσης και πρόληψης για τον καρκίνο του μαστού, από την Ελληνική Χειρουργική Εταιρία Μαστού (Ε.Χ.Ε.Μ.), σε συνδιοργάνωση με την Περιφέρεια Κεντρικής Μακεδονίας και το Δήμο Θεσσαλονίκης. Την εκδήλωση, που τελεί υπό την αιγίδα του Ιατρικού Συλλόγου Θεσσαλονίκης, θα στηρίξει με παρουσία στο χώρο της εκδήλωσης και με βιωματικές ομιλίες, ο Σύλλογος Γυναικών με Καρκίνο Μαστού «ΑΛΜΑ ΖΩΗΣ Ν. Θεσσαλονίκης».

Στην εκδήλωση, σε ειδικά διαμορφωμένα ιατρεία, θα διενεργούνται  δωρεάν εξετάσεις (κλινική εξέταση και υπερηχογράφημα μαστών) και κατ΄ιδίαν συμβουλευτική προς όλες τις ενδιαφερόμενες, από ειδικευμένους Χειρουργούς Μαστού και Ακτινοδιαγνώστες Μαστού.

Παράλληλα, θα γίνονται ενημερωτικές ομιλίες από καταξιωμένους ιατρούς της Ελληνικής Χειρουργικής Εταιρίας Μαστού, σε ανοιχτή συζήτηση με το κοινό.

Radiohead Let Fans Choose Price Of New Album

Radiohead takes an innovative approach with the release of their seventh studio album, In Rainbows, by offering it as a pay-what-you-want download. Most people pay nothing for the download, but the album still fares well - better, in fact, than the previous Hail to the Thief album - through pre-sales for "discbox" editions.

Music fans are beginning to move away from physical media such as CDs and near-obsolete cassettes in favor of digital downloads that put the tunes straight onto their (OK?) computers as strings of code. MP3 players have replaced the Sony Discman as the portable player of choice, and record stores around the world are closing their doors for good (Tower Records shuttered in 2006).

When Radiohead decides, after their six-album contract with EMI ends, to release their next album digitally and with no set price before the official release date, industry officials fear that it could be the nail in the coffin for physical album sales. It's bad enough that fans are downloading music for free illegally via sites like Napster; now the artists themselves are giving it away. Surely, In Rainbows will be a commercial failure.

Not quite. While many fans pay nothing for the digital album, Radiohead's Thom Yorke confirms that before the physical album release in December 2007, sales of In Rainbows will have topped the total sales of their previous album, Hail To The Thief. The discbox, which contains two CDs, two vinyl albums, a lyric booklet and custom artwork, sells roughly 100,000 copies.

On December 29, 2007, In Rainbows is released in physical form in the US. It immediately hits the top of the Billboard 200, indicating that rather than hindering physical album sales, digital media can actually be an effective means of sales promotion. And once again, Radiohead finds success by going against the grain.

Η RYANAIR ΑΝΑΚΟΙΝΩΣΕ 124 ΔΡΟΜΟΛΟΓΙΑ ΣΤΗΝ ΕΛΛΑΔΑ ΓΙΑ ΤΟ ΚΑΛΟΚΑΙΡΙ 2019

21 ΝΕΑ ΔΡΟΜΟΛΟΓΙΑ & 6.1ΕΚ ΕΠΙΒΑΤΕΣ ΚΑΤ΄ ΕΤΟΣ

Η Ryanair ανακοίνωσε σήμερα (10 Οκτ) το καλοκαιρινό της πρόγραμμα για το 2019 με 21 νέα συναρπαστικά δρομολόγια, όπως Αθήνα-Μαρακές, Κέρκυρα-Λονδίνο, Μύκονος Μπορντό και Θεσσαλονίκη-Δουβλίνο, με πάνω από 120 δρομολόγια στο σύνολο, τα οποία θα μεταφέρουν 6.1 εκ. επιβάτες κατ’ έτος από τα 9 αεροδρόμια που δραστηριοποιείται στην Ελλάδα, και αναπτύσσει τη διεθνή της επιβατική κίνηση το καλοκαίρι, κατά 6%.

Το καλοκαιρινό πρόγραμμα της Ryanair για το 2019, περιλαμβάνει:

• 9 αεροδρόμια
• 21 νέα δρομολόγια
• 124 δρομολόγια στο σύνολο
• 6.1εκ. επιβάτες κατ’ έτος
• 4,575* θέσεις εργασίας

Στην Αθήνα:

• 5 νέα δρομολόγια: Κατάνια (2 εβδ), Αϊντχόφεν (3), Λονδίνο Λούτον (καθημερινά), Μαρακές (2) & Παλέρμο (2)

• 32 δρομολόγια στο σύνολο
• 2.4εκ. επιβάτες κατ’ έτος
• 1,800* θέσεις εργασίας

Στην Θεσσαλονίκη:

• 4 νέα δρομολόγια: Δουβλίνο (2 εβδ), Λααπενράντα (1),

Μάλτα (2) & Μάντσεστερ (2)

• 30 δρομολόγια στο σύνολο
• 1.55εκ. επιβάτες κατ’ έτος
• 1,160* θέσεις εργασίας

Οι Έλληνες καταναλωτές και επισκέπτες μπορούν πλέον να κάνουν κράτηση για τις διακοπές τους από 124 δρομολόγια, για ταξίδι έως και τον Οκτώβριο 2019 στις χαμηλότερες τιμές. Για να το γιορτάσει, η Ryanair προσφέρει θέσεις από την Ελλάδα από μόνο 14,99€, για ταξίδι από τώρα μέχρι τον Δεκέμβρη και κράτηση έως και τα μεσάνυχτα της Παρασκευής (12 Οκτ), μόνο στην ιστοσελίδα της Ryanair.com,

An Explorer's Guide to
Hidden Times Square

There's the Times Square you know, full of blazing billboards, selfie sticks, and costumed characters. Then there's the less familiar one, beyond the lights—the nooks and crannies that most visitors to Midtown Manhattan overlook. They're not obvious, but surprises can still be found along this world-famous stretch of real estate.

SUBWAY ART

1. Overlooked Street Scenes

Your adventure begins in the 42nd Street-Times Square subway station. Most passengers sprinting (or slogging) between the N/R/Q/W corridor and the S platform likely blow right past handmade ceramic reliefs by the Bronx-based sculptor Toby Buonagurio, which are set into the tunnel’s frosted-glass walls. Not you! Thirty-five artworks are scattered throughout this hallway, installed in 2005 as part of the transit agency's efforts to beautify the system with permanent, site-specific art. Buonagurio's frenetic street scenes are rendered in clay and adorned with splashes of bright glaze. In one, a woman in cat-eye glasses, red gloves, and a tropical-fruit charm bracelet fans consults a subway map. In another, a kid trades an enormous dollar bill for a mustard-squiggled hot dog. Step out of the stream of commuters and say hello to them.

RETRO RELIC

2. A Door to Nowhere

Up until the first incarnation of the Knickerbocker Hotel shuttered in 1920, commuters were able to enter it straight from the platform. They ambled down a corridor lined with settees and Art Nouveau flourishes. Once inside, they might visit the hotel's infamous watering hole, where the city's elite rubbed elbows and tossed back drinks. There, the bartender Martini di Arma di Taggia is rumored to have invented his namesake cocktail and poured one for John D. Rockefeller. You can still find a sign reading “KNICKERBOCKER” on the far end of Track 1 along the S line, linking Times Square and Grand Central. These days, though, the door is firmly sealed. Like the entrances to supply closets and engineering rooms we so often shuffle past on subway platforms, you can look, but you can’t enter.

3. Knickerbocker Hotel Rooftop

Its clandestine entrance may be sealed up, but since the Beaux Arts hotel reopened in 2015, you only have to go above ground to step back in time. Enter the hotel from the street and ride the elevator to the roof. Seventeen stories up, you'll find the St. Cloud bar, which provides a pigeon-eye-view that reveals marvels easily missed on the ground.

There are minor wonders to behold on the rooftop itself. Copper lions' heads (with appropriately wind-swept manes) stand guard. Carefully restored when the hotel reopened, they've returned to their early-20th-century splendor. Next, look northwest to the tiered pyramid topped with a glass orb and a four-faced clock. The dramatic rooftop marks the former home of Paramount Pictures, and it’s been a stunner for more than 90 years. Though the film company's eponymous theater is long gone, the graceful clock remains. It's not instantly noticeable from the ground, though, where other, louder buildings demand attention. Glimpsing it from the Knickerbocker's high-up vantage point, you can savor a little Old Hollywood glamor in the heart of Times Square.

4. The Lobby of AMC Empire 25

Blockbuster new releases are on offer in this modern multiplex, but you’re dropping by to visit the past via paint and plaster. This space debuted in 1912, as a theatrical venue called the Eltinge; later, in the mid-1950s, it was rechristened as the Empire. Abbott and Costello are said to have joked around here before they hit it big, and the theater regularly hosted burlesque acts and film screenings—it's just that all of this took place a little bit farther east.

In 1998, this entire building was loaded up on hydraulic jacks and nudged roughly 170 feet down the block, so its proscenium, ceiling, and box seats could serve as a lobby for the new movie palace. The short jaunt took up the entire morning and some of the afternoon, but it went off without a hitch. From just inside the door, you can still spy ornate sphinxes on the ceiling, and a dreamy mural of women dancing with gauzy scarves. Ride the escalator for a close-up view.

DIVINE EATS

5. John's Pizza

This sit-down pizza joint is a cathedral of sauce, meat, and crust. It makes sense: The building was once home to the Gospel Tabernacle Church. Since the current owners didn’t completely gut the interior, diners can feast on brick-oven pies beneath chandeliers, an octagonal stained-glass ceiling, and a balcony that once held the Sunday service’s overflow crowd.

6. Sidewalk Sound Installation

In 1977, the aural artist Max Neuhaus installed a permanent soundscape beneath a sidewalk grate. Officially titled Times Square, it’s colloquially known as “the hum,” and it’s often drowned out by grumbling trains, bleating horns, or the hollers of pedestrians milling around to snap pictures with a quintet of Mickey Mouses. Crouch down close to this patch of the pedestrian plaza, though, and it’s unmistakable. Up from the grate drifts a sound that recalls an ethereal whir, or what you might hear if you handed a xylophone to an alien. The piece fell silent from 1992 to 2002, but otherwise, it’s been humming along pretty much ever since, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

7. An Inlaid Map of the Great White Way

If you find yourself turned around or disoriented, walk half a block north and get your bearings by looking at the ground. There, you’ll find a 28-foot map that plots the locations of 40 professional Broadway theaters in granite and stainless steel, built right into the sidewalk. The map also serves as a cartographic memorial to composers, lyricists, and playwrights including Richard Rodgers, Stephen Sondheim, and August Wilson, each of whom have a theater named for them.

8. Showbiz Statues of Israel Miller's Shoe Store

Just east of the sidewalk map, you’ll find a cast of stone actors frozen in pantomime above the facade of a former shoe store. Israel Miller shod New York’s dancers and actors in the 1910s and '20s, and a stone inscription running beneath the cornice heralds the cobbler’s commitment to his bespoke craft: “The Show Folks Shoe Shop Dedicated to Beauty in Footwear.” 

The statues debuted in 1929, representing drama, musical comedy, opera, and motion pictures, with the figures modeled on leading ladies of the day (Ethel Barrymore is on the far left, in the role of Ophelia from Hamlet). Miller died that year, but the store marched along for another five decades. The statues were restored in 2012, scrubbed of decades of grime, and finally returned to their perch. These days, their dramatic stances are sharp contrasts to the expressionless mannequins in the clothing-store window below. If you want to marvel at the sculptures, the best seat in the house is across the way, on the south side of 46th Street.

9. Jon Baltimore Music Company

Keep walking east on 46th Street, and you’ll arrive at a shop that evokes the district’s heyday as a music capital. Jon Baltimore spent his childhood, in the 1970s, helping out in his dad’s repair shop and apprenticing with Robert Giardinelli, a craftsman who restored instruments on 46th Street for four decades. Baltimore eventually opened his own business in Giardinelli’s old shop, and you can drop in to marvel at walls of saxophones, a full organ, or a centuries-old bassoon. On any given visit, you might see Baltimore working away with tools he fashioned by hand, or inviting a guest to blow through a mouthpiece once owned by Louis Armstrong (it’s still stamped with the musician’s name). Don’t miss the photo collage around the doorway—it’s an intimate tribute to the greats who played their way across the city.

10. Ceiling of the Church of St. Mary the Virgin

With its high-wattage billboards blotting out the sky, Times Square is an astronomy lover's hell. Painted heavens are easier to come by. A few storefronts east of the music shop, you’ll find the Church of St. Mary the Virgin, whose deep blue, French Gothic nave is speckled with golden stars. During Sunday mass, the church often clouds with incense, earning it the nickname Smoky Mary’s. If you visit during the week, though, you should have no trouble glimpsing the moody expanse.

11. Latin Lunch at Margon

Directly across the street, you’ll find a delectable, no-frills Cuban eatery that’s a far cry from the chains and anonymous delis jostling for your attention nearby. Margon is special, and not just because you get a lot of bang—and palomilla steak—for your buck. Instead of bland, budget-busting fare, you can get a heaping plate of fried king fish, a hefty sandwich, or a generous bowl of sopa de mondongo con patita (tripe soup with pig feet) for a price many nearby restaurants would charge for appetizers. That’s a very good thing for both your belly and your wallet.

Fair warning: Margon is only open until 5 p.m., and is typically closed on Sundays.

   2000: πεθαίνει ο Σκοτσέζος πολιτικός, Ντόναλντ Ντιούαρ. 

   2003: "η Ελλάδα νικά την Βόρεια Ιρλανδία 1-0 (Τσιάρτας) στη Λεωφόρο και το όνειρο της πρόκρισης στα τελικά του Euro 2004 στην Πορτογαλία γίνεται πραγματικότητα, για δεύτερη φορά στην ιστορία της μετά το 1980. Στον αγώνα αυτό ακούγεται για πρώτη φορά η σύνθεση του Μίκη Θεοδωράκη για την Εθνική. Μετά τη λήξη ο συνθέτης θα δηλώσει προφητικά, ""ελπίζω να τα πάμε καλά στην Πορτογαλία και να φτάσουμε ψηλά, γιατί όχι και μέχρι τον τελικό. Ο ύμνος που έγραψα για την Εθνική είναι ένας γούρικος ύμνος, για να βάζουμε γκολ"". Η Εθνική μας με εύστοχο πέναλτι, που εκτελεί ο Βασίλης Τσάρτας στο 69΄ παίρνει κατευθείαν το εισιτήριο για τα γήπεδα της Πορτογαλίας, επιτρέποντας μας να επιστρέψουμε στα μεγάλα ευρωπαϊκά σαλόνια μετά από απουσία 24 χρόνων. Το καλοκαίρι του 2004 η Ελλάδα στέφεται πρωταθλήτρια Ευρώπης." 

   2003: πραγματοποιείται με επιτυχία στη Ρώμη ο διαχωρισμός των σιαμαίων κοριτσιών από τη Θεσσαλονίκη σε μια πολύωρη χειρουργική επέμβαση. Τα πέντε μηνών κοριτσάκια, μόλις ξυπνούν από τη νάρκωση αναζητούν αμέσως το ένα το άλλο. Την ίδια μέρα στο Ντάλας του Τέξας μια ακόμα χειρουργική επέμβαση διαχωρισμού δύο σιαμαίων αγοριών από την Αίγυπτο, ηλικίας δύο ετών, των ’Αχμεντ και Μοχάμεντ Ιμπραχίμ, ολοκληρώνεται με επιτυχία. Τα σιαμαία δεν μπορούσαν να δουν το ένα το άλλο καθώς ήταν ενωμένα στο κεφάλι επί της βρεγματικής χώρας. 

   2004: το Τριμελές Εφετείο Κακουργημάτων επιβάλλει στους Κώστα Αγαπίου, Χρήστο Τσιγαρίδα, Αγγελέτο Κανά και Ειρήνη Αθανασάκη ποινή κάθειρξης 25 χρόνων στον καθένα και 22.000 ευρώ πρόστιμο, αφού λίγες μέρες νωρίτερα το δικαστήριο τους έκρινε ένοχους για συμμετοχή στην τρομοκρατική οργάνωση ΕΛΑ, ενώ αθώος κρίθηκε ο Μιχάλης Κασσίμης, ελλείψει αποδεικτικών στοιχείων.

H  επανάσταση στους αιθέρες από την Airbus

Ελικόπτερο που θα μπορεί να πετά με 400 χλμ. την ώρα και θα εκμηδενίζει πλέον το χρόνο μεταφοράς επιβατών σε σχετικά μικρές αποστάσεις 

Τα ελικόπτέρα διαθέτουν ένα μεγάλο πλεονέκτημα έναντι των αεροπλάνων: Μπορούν να απογειώνονται από ένα μικρό κομμάτι γης ή κτιρίου ή γιοτ. Από την άλλη όμως είναι εξαιρετικά πιο αργοκίνητα, ένα γεγονός που παίζει σημαντικό ρόλο στην εποχή της ταχύτητας και του εξωφρενικού πλούτου. Και εδώ που τα λέμε, ένας μεγιστάνας του χρήματος δεν θα δώσει ιδιαίτερη σημασία στο κόστος… Παρ’ όλα αυτά, η εταιρεία Airbus Helicopters, μία από τις θυγατρικές του ευρωπαϊκού κολοσσού των αερομεταφορών και της αεροναυπηγικής, η κορυφαία μάλιστα στο χώρο των ελικοπτέρων, ανακοίνωσε πρόσφατα πως ήδη σχεδιάζει ένα νέου τύπου ελικόπτερο που θα ανατρέψει πολλά από τα δεδομένα ετών στο χώρο.

Συμμετέχοντας στο ευρωπαϊκό πρόγραμμα Clean Sky 2, το οποίο ερευνά τις δυνατότητες δημιουργίας πιο ασφαλών, λιγότερο ρυπογόνων και με μικρότερο θόρυβο αεροπλάνων, η Airbus κατασκευάζει ένα νέο είδος ελικοπτέρου, τύπου Rotorcraft, το οποίο διαθέτει επιπλέον έλικες σε ένα ζεύγος φτερών, με στόχο να είναι αρκετά πιο γρήγορο σε ταχύτητα αλλά και πιο οικονομικό σε λειτουργικό κόστος. Μάλιστα, η εταιρεία λογαριάζει να το τεστάρει στον αέρα μέχρι το 2020 και υποστηρίζει πως θα μπορεί να φτάνει σε ταχύτητα τα 250 μίλια, δηλαδή πάνω από 400 χλμ. την ώρα.

Το νέο αεροσκάφος βασίζεται στο προηγούμενο project της Airbus, το πρωτότυπο X3, το οποίο η εταιρεία παρουσίασε το 2013, καταρρίπτωντας το ρεκόρ ταχύτητας ελικοπτέρου σε κανονικές συνθήκες πτήσης, φτάνοντας τα 293 μίλια, δηλαδή τα 471 χλμ. την ώρα.Παρ’ όλα αυτά, το X3 ήταν ένα καθαρά πειραματικό μοντέλο και η προσαρμογή του στα επίπεδα εμπορικής χρήσης, με σχεδιασμό δηλαδή ώστε να μεταφέρει επιβάτες, μειώνει αρκετά τα όρια της ταχύτητας του. Στο νέο ελικόπτερο της Airbus, ο σχεδιασμός των πτερυγίων, ο οποίος επίσης θα βασίζεται στο X3, θα προσθέτει επιπλέον ώθηση στους ρότορες ανύψωσης ενώ οι δύο μηχανές RTM322, της γαλλικής Safran Helicopter Engines, εκτός από τους έλικες των φτερών, θα συνδέεται και με τον κύριο ρότορα του αεροσκάφους.

Επιπλέον, σημαντικές προσθήκες στο Racer, όπως ονομάζει η Airbus το νέο της ελικόπτερο, θα είναι στο ντεπόζιτο των καυσίμων, για την κατασκευή του οποίου χρησιμοποιείται ένα νέο, πρωτοποριακό υλικό, αρκετά πιο ελαφρύ σε βάρος και πιο εύκολο στη λειτουργικότητα του, όπως επίσης και μια νέου τύπου ηλεκτρογεννήτρια, που η εταιρεία ευελπιστεί πως θα φέρει τα πάνω-κάτω στον τομέα των ελικοπτέρων.

1955, Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash kicked off an eleven date tour of the Southern US states in Abilene, Texas.

1961, The Highwaymen were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Michael'. The US group's only UK Top 40 hit. The Highwaymen were US college students who broke up when they graduated.

1962, The Beatles made their first appearance on the UK singles chart with 'Love Me Do' which peaked at No. 4 on the chart.

1967, The Doors appeared at Danbury High School, Danbury, Connecticut. Before the group came on stage an announcer told the audience not to leave their seats during the performance or they would be escorted out of the venue. There was also a beauty pageant just prior to The Doors coming on stage.

1968, During a Beatles recording session at Abbey Road six saxophonists recorded parts for 'Savoy Truffle' for the forthcoming White Album. George Harrison distorted the saxophones to get the desired sound.

1969, One Hit Wonders Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Je t'aime... Moi non plus.' Banned by many radio stations for its sexual content and sounds and for first time in the history of the show, the BBC’s Top Of The Pops producers refused to air the No. 1 song.

1974, John Denver was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Annie's Song.' The song was a tribute to his wife and was written in 10 minutes while he was on a ski lift.

1976, Pussycat started a four week run at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Mississippi' making them the first Dutch act to top the UK chart.

1980, The Police scored their second UK No.1 album with their third studio release 'Zenyatta Mondatta', which featured, 'Don't Stand So Close to Me', 'Canary in a Coalmine and 'De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da.'

1981, The Rolling Stones performed at the Memorial Coliseum, Los Angeles, California, USA, as part of a 50-date North American tour. 95 fans were arrested after trouble broke out at the venue. The tour became the largest grossing of 1981, with $50 million in ticket sales.

1986, Janet Jackson started a two week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'When I Think Of You', her first US No.1, a No.10 hit in the UK.

1986, Madonna was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with the title track from her album. 'True Blue' her third UK No.1. The title came from a favorite expression of her then husband Sean Penn and was a direct tribute to him.

1989, Michael Jackson attended the opening ceremony of the Michael Jackson Auditorium at his former school, Gardner Street Elementary in Hollywood, California. In November, 2003, school officials covered over Jackson's name with painted plywood, leaving only the word "Auditorium" showing, after receiving requests from angry parents when Jackson was booked on suspicion of child molestation.

1990, Drummer Dave Grohl played his first gig with Nirvana when they appeared at the North Shore Surf Club in Olympia.

1991, Apple Computers settled a lawsuit launched by The Beatles record company, Apple Corporation, over name and logo rights. The computer company reportedly paid $29 million to settle the suit.

1995, Tupac Shakur was released from Clinton Correctional Prison on $1.4 Million bail which was posted by Suge Knight. In return 2Pac signed a three album deal with Knight's Death Row Records.

1997, Elton John went to No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Candle In The Wind 97' A re-write of his 1974 hit about Marilyn Monroe. This version was raising funds for the Diana, Princess of Wales charity, following her death in Paris. It went on to become the biggest selling single in the world ever.

1999, Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee was released on $5000 bail after facing charges relating to a riot at a gig in North Carolina in 1997. Lee allegedly incited the crowd to attack a guard and had also poured a drink over his head.

2005, Freddie Mercury's  1974 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow was offered for auction on eBay by his sister, Kashmira Cooke, who had inherited the car from him. The luxury vehicle had not appeared in public since 2002, when it had been used to transport the Bulsara family to the premiere of the Queen stage musical We Will Rock You. It came with a box of Kleenex Mansize tissues left in the car by Freddie.

2006, Madonna adopted a one-year-old boy in Malawi, Africa, the boy's father, Yohane Banda, told reporters "I know he will be very happy in America." The boy's mother had died a week after he was born.

2009, Barbra Streisand went to No.1 on the US album charts with 'Love Is the Answer'. Streisand's ninth No.1 album, making her the only artist to have a number one album in America in five different decades.

2009, 54-year-old Jo Wood, wife of The Rolling Stones Ronnie Wood was granted a divorce after 24 years of marriage on the grounds of adultery. The couple split in 2008 after the guitarist, 64, began a relationship with a 20-year-old woman.

2010, George Michael was released from Highpoint Prison in Suffolk, England after serving four of an eight week sentence for driving under the influence of drugs. The singer had been arrested after crashing his car into the front of a Snappy Snaps store in Hampstead, North London in July of this year.

2012, The Rolling Stones new single, 'Doom And Gloom', was released, the first new studio recordings since 2005's A Bigger Bang. Doom And Gloom was the lead single from the band’s most recent greatest hits collection, GRRR!

2015, Camera Obscura keyboardist Carey Lander died from osteosarcoma, a rare form of blood cancer aged 33. The Scottish indie pop band's first album, Biggest Bluest Hi Fi, was released in 2001.

2016, Sir Rod Stewart said he was "on cloud nine" after being knighted by the Duke of Cambridge at Buckingham Palace. The singer was honoured in the Queen's birthday honours list in recognition of his services to music and charity.

Taylor Swift breaks all-time American Music Awards record

Taylor Swift not only opened the American Music Awards with a fiery performance of I Did Something Bad, but she went on to dominate the show.

The star won four trophies, including artist of the year, making her the ceremony's most-decorated female ever.

She now holds 23 AMAs, beating a record previously held by Whitney Houston.

Swift, who recently broke years of political silence to declare support for two Democrats, again urged fans to take part in the US mid-term elections.

Accepting artist of the year, she said: "This award, and every single award given out tonight, were voted on by the people. 

"And you know what else is voted on by the people? The midterm elections on November 6. Get out and vote. I love you guys."

Swift's touring partner Camila Cabello also won four awards at the ceremony; while British singers Ella Mai and Dua Lipa gave show-stopping performances.

Resembling nothing less than an explosion in a branch of Claire's Accessories; Cardi B's vibrant, multicoloured performance was stunning even before she wheeled Bad Bunny on stage in a shopping trolley.

She went on to flex her leg over her head and ride a bicycle across the stage (sadly not at the same time) - leaving SNL star Taran Killam somewhat lost for words.

They multiple award winners, but touring partners and BFFs Taylor Swift and Camila Cabello seemed to be more excited to spend a night in each other's company. 

Who says women in music have to be at each other's throats all the time?

Meanwhile, Swift hinted she'd started work on the follow-up to Reputation.

"I always look at albums as chapters in my life," she said on stage. 

"To the fans, I'm so happy that you like this one - but I have to be really honest with you about something: I'm even more excited about the next chapter."

Setting out her stall for next year's Grammy Awards, Dua Lipa performed two massive house hits - One Kiss and Electricity - while being doused in UV fluorescent paint by a troupe of dancers.

The stage recreated the warehouse setting of her Electricity video - itself a callback to Janet Jackson's Pleasure Principle - while Dua prompted gasps from the audience by falling backwards from a 10-foot-high metal staircase. 

Luckily, there were some dancers ready to catch her.

Rapper XXXTentacion, who was shot dead in June, was a pothumous winner in the best soul and R&B album category.

His mother, Cleopatra Bernard, choked back tears as she accepted the award on his behalf.

"I'm so nervous, you guys," she admitted as she reached the stage. 

"I am honoured to accept this award on behalf of my son. I would like to thank the AMAs, his fans, and to everyone who made this possible. Thank you guys so much, I appreciate it."

The R&B star has scored a viral hit with her new single - and she effortlessly kept up with the song's frenetic pace with a pin-sharp, Rhythm-Nation-style performance.

Backed by an army of dancers, it gave the show's third hour a much-needed injection of energy; ramping up even further when Missy Elliot crashed the stage to deliver her verse from the song's remix.

Ciara then segued into another hit single, Dose, managing to incorporate a segment of BlocBoy JB's "shoot" dance as she was surrounded by a marching band.

"Now that's how you do it," said host Tracee Ellis Ross, as the singer received a standing ovation from Khalid, Camila Cabello, and Cardi B.

With their third album poised to enter the charts at number one this week, Twenty One Pilots didn't pull any punches with their performance of Jumpsuit.

Singer Tyler Joseph remained uncharacteristically still for the song's opening minute before throwing himself around the stage as the crunching bass riff kicked in.

By the climax, the stage was ablaze, with a car behind the band bursting into flames.

In a night crammed full of pop, it provided a rare opportunity for the moshpit to kick into action.

An Aretha Franklin tribute closed the show

Aretha Franklin was a regular guest at the AMAs, as a host, performer, and winner - so it seemed fitting that the ceremony would close with a tribute to the star.

Eschewing hits like Respect and Dr Feelgood, the performance focused on her gospel roots and her favourite hymns, including several from her best-selling 1972 live album, Amazing Grace. 

Gladys Knight opened the segment with a heartfelt rendition of Amazing Grace, before being joined by Mary Mary, Ce Ce Winans, Ledisi and Donnie McClurkins for a medley that included How I Got Over, Mary Don't You Weep and Climb Higher Mountains," which was used as the recessional song at Franklin's funeral. 

During the performance, the cameras panned around to the audience, where Franklin's granddaughter Victoria was watching in tears.

Saturday Night Live Debuts With Lots Of Music

Saturday Night - a title later changed to Saturday Night Live - makes its debut on NBC. Music is a big part of the show, and the first episode features two musical guests performing two songs each: Janis Ian doing "At Seventeen" and "In the Winter," and Billy Preston playing "Nothing from Nothing" and "Fancy Lady."

The second episode is hosted by a musician: Paul Simon. He reunites with Art Garfunkel during the show, one of many music history moments that would be made on the 30 Rock stage. Simon's episode, which also features Randy Newman and Phoebe Snow, is more musical variety than sketch comedy. The Not Ready For Prime Time Players, including Chevy Chase and John Belushi, get more airtime on later episodes, but music gets its due. Season 1 performers include transgressive singers like Gil Scott-Heron and Patti Smith, but also pop stars like ABBA and Neil Sedaka, an eclectic mix of popularity and credibility.

'70s guests include luminaries like Chuck Berry, Linda Ronstadt, Brian Wilson, Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson. They don't snag The Beatles, but they get pretty close: In a 1976 episode, executive producer Lorne Michaels goes on camera with a check for $3,000, which he offers the group if they'll swing by. John Lennon and Paul McCartney are watching from Lennon's apartment in New York City and consider the offer, but decide to pass it up.

The first musician to go off-script on the air is Elvis Costello, who snubs his record company by stopping his performance of his latest single, "Less Than Zero," and launching into an unreleased song called "Radio Radio." This kind of antic gets you banned from the show and labelled a loose cannon, but other daring musicians are willing to risk it. In 1980, James Brown won't stop performing, so they have to cut to commercial; in 1981, Prince throws down the microphone and yells "f--k." But the most controversial incident belongs to Sinéad O'Connor, who tears up a picture of the Pope in 1992. Costello and Prince are welcomed back decades later; O'Connor and Brown are not.

SNL often features politicians, who don't always mesh with the musical guests. In 1996, Rage Against The Machine is kicked off the show after their first number when they try to hang upside-down American flags on their amplifiers as a counterweight to host Steve Forbes, a billionaire running for President. But the most polarizing politician to host the show is Donald Trump, whose November 7, 2015 appearance comes at a time when his presidential bid still seems like a long-shot. The musical guest is Sia, who makes no overt protest but declines his request to take a picture. When Trump takes office, he blasts the show, which blasts him back with an unflattering portrayal by Alec Baldwin. Bucking the anti-Trump sentiment, Kanye West, granted a third song on the 2018 season premiere episode, performs wearing a hat with Trump's campaign slogan (Make America Great Again) and then breaks into a rant professing his support: "If someone inspires me and I connect with them, I don't have to believe in all they policies."

Not every memorable musical moment is political: Steve Martin's "King Tut" becomes a hit in 1978 when he does the Egyptian-themed number on the show; Paul Simon debuts "Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes" in 1986 with Ladysmith Black Mambazo, the group he discovered in Apartheid-torn South Africa. In 2017, a week after a shooting at his festival performance in Las Vegas and five days after Tom Petty's death, Jason Aldean hits the right note by performing "I Won't Back Down" to open the show.
