The Warlike Origins
of ‘Going Dutch’
The term for splitting the bill has its roots in a bitter
international rivalry.
AT THE END OF A restaurant meal, deciding who pays and how much can be fraught. Societal norms tend to dictate if one person whips out their credit card, or if everyone should “go Dutch”: that is, pay their own share.
“Going Dutch” can quickly get complicated, with adding up tax, tip, and separate bills. But the origin of the term is even more complex: It likely stems from a centuries-old dispute between England and the Netherlands that left behind a slew of uncomplimentary phrases in English, all rooted in the word “Dutch.”
In the 17th century, the Dutch Republic and the English competed over international trade, colonies, and domination of the seas. Starting in 1652, the Dutch and English fought three wars over the next 22 years, battling over everything from herring to current-day New York. Propaganda meant that relations soured quickly, and both the English and the Dutch considered plagues and fires in the other country to be a punishment from God.
Name-calling became common in pamphlets and woodcuts. The Dutch claimed that the English were descended from the Devil himself, and therefore had tails. The English retaliated by calling the Dutch “butterboxes” and drunkards. The enmity lingered, even as the wars became less frequent. In the following centuries, the word “Dutch” in the English language eventually came to describe anything sub-par.
The insults came fast and thick. Dutch soldiers, according to the English, needed “Dutch courage,” or alcohol-fueled bravado, to fight. A “Dutch uncle” was a stern and authoritative figure, not a kindly uncle. “Dutch feasts” were parties where the host got drunk first, while a “Dutch reckoning” was an unitemized bill with unexpected charges. “Dutch comfort” was the small consolation that a bad situation wasn’t worse.
In essence, writes Peter Douglas of the New Netherland Institute, “Dutch” implied anything opposite or inferior to the way it should have been, and often the term was used for everything from crude insults to possibly even cookware. The Dutch oven, a lidded pot that can be used for baking, may or may not be part of this trend: It’s not truly an oven, but the Dutch may have simply been good at producing them.
“To go Dutch,” though, is an all-American term. As Jonathan Milder writes in Entertaining from Ancient Rome to the Super Bowl, one of the first scornful references to a “Dutch treat”—that is, not really treating someone else at all—appears in a New York Times article from 1877. The term coincides with what Milder calls “the centuries-old British sport of mocking the Dutch,” but can also be a reference to the contemporary German-American habit of everyone buying their own drink (Dutch being a confused reference to Deutsch, or “German”).
Naturally, the disparaging use of the word “Dutch” had consequences. As recently as 1934, writes Milder, the Dutch government issued orders for officials to avoid using the term “Dutch” to dodge the stigma. However, most “Dutch” terminology seems fairly old-fashioned today. It’s a fitting fate for a linguistic practice based on centuries-old hatred.

"I don't express myself particularly well when I talk, but when I write, words, melodies flow," Charles Aznavour told The Telegraph in 2001.
"Their pathway is from brain to pen."
Over the years, he wrote more than 1,200 songs, dealing with everything from street violence and the deaf to ecology and homosexuality (and love, bien sûr).
It's almost impossible to write a precise guide to such an extensive catalogue - but here are just six of his most memorable songs.
Yesterday, When I Was Young (Hier Encore)
Aznavour was only 40 when he wrote this nostalgic torch song to youth; a chanson that devastatingly captures the realisation of wasted potential.
In French it was called Hier Encore but Aznavour always felt the English version, co-written with Les Miserables' lyricist Herbert Kretzmer, was more poetic.
It opens optimistically: "Yesterday when I was young / The taste of life was sweet as rain upon my tongue," but grows more poignant as it builds to the finale: "There are so many songs in me that won't be sung ... The time has come for me to pay for yesterday / When I was young."
The song was made a hit in the US by country singer Roy Clark; while Bing Crosby, Andy Williams, Shirley Bassey and Dusty Springfield all recorded covers.
But the world-weary resignation of Aznavour's original, accentuated by that trademark vocal rasp (caused by a paralyzed vocal cord in his youth), was never bettered.
What Makes A Man (Comme Ils Disent)
Controversial at the time, this ballad paints a tender portrait of a lonely gay man in the 1970s, of his close relationship to his mother, and his nights spent impersonating female stars in Parisian nightclubs.
Aznavour wrote it to address "the specific problems my gay friends faced," he once said.
"I could see things were different for them, that they were marginalised."
"It is still forbidden in certain unenlightened countries," he told Canada's The Starin 2014. "I sang it in prime time in America on the Johnny Carson show 25 years ago. They were not happy about that, but I received many grateful letters."
Après l'Amour
"You slip your fingers into my open shirt" - Après l'Amour is a flighty, languorous depiction of a couple lying together in bed after making love.
"Wrapped in the twisted sheets, we stay entwined together," he sings.
Included on the 1955 EP Interdit Aux Moins de 16 Ans (forbidden to those under 16), it was struck from the airwaves by the French government.
But once the ban was lifted in the late 1960s, it became one of his most-loved songs.
She (Tous Les Visages De L'amour)
His biggest hit in the UK, She was written as the theme tune to the 1974 BBC series The Seven Faces of Women.
The song needed to tie together the series' seven separate stories, each depicting contemporary women at various stages of life - which is why the woman Aznavour sings about is never named.
The producers originally wanted Marlene Dietrich to record the song but lyricist Herbert Kretzmer (Les Misarables) put his foot down, insisting "if there is one thing I know about the mystery of women it's that they don't talk about it. If they did, it wouldn't be a mystery."
Aznavour spent four weeks at number one with the record; but it took longer to become a hit in his home country, partly because the word "she" sounded like a slang word for faeces.
You've Let Yourself Go (Tu T'Laisses Aller)
"I gaze at you in sheer despair and see your mother standing there," sings the three-times-married Aznavour, as he notes with displeasure as his partner grows old and dowdy.
Rather than telling a real-life story, though, You've Let Yourself Go was inspired by a movie - La Poison - a dark satire in which a husband gets away with murdering his charmless, alcoholic wife, despite admitting his guilt in court.
"There's plenty of great ideas in movies. Plenty of bad ones too," said Aznavour. "A good writer knows the difference."
La Boheme
Aznavour's signature song, La Boheme remembers Toulouse-Lautrec's Montmartre, where painters could rarely afford to eat - but where art and love were enough to sustain them.
An ode to simpler times "when I was starving and you posed nude," it is also a lament for the loss of youth.
"When, on a random day, I go for a walk to my old address," sings Aznavour, "Montmartre seems sad and the lilac trees are dead."
Such was the song's popularity that he recorded versions in Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, English and German.
He also performed it at almost all his concerts, frequently producing a handkerchief and using it as a painter's rag, dabbing at an invisible canvas as he sang. When he dropped the hankie to the floor, there was inevitably a scramble amongst the audience to retrieve it.

Armenia: Six things you may not know
Armenians have been making headlines by shutting down cities with major protests. How much do you know about this landlocked former Soviet republic in the southern Caucasus? Here are six facts to get you started (and possibly boost a future pub quiz score).
1. More Armenians live outside the republic than in it
The country's population is around three million but millions more live abroad. There are big diasporas in the United States, Russia and France. Many recent Armenian migrants go to Russia for its proximity and because many speak Russian.
2. Mount Ararat is considered a national symbol
Even though it is in Turkey...
The snow-capped mountain (5,165m; 16,945ft) dominates the horizon in the Armenian capital, Yerevan, and is named in the Bible as the place Noah's Ark grounded after the flood.
3. It is one of the earliest Christian civilisations
Armenia was the first country to adopt Christianity as its official religion in the early 4th Century and its Church is completely autonomous from other Christian Churches of the world.
4. Learning chess is compulsory
Since 2011, all children in Armenia from six to eight years old have had compulsory chess lessons.
The country has produced numerous grandmasters and it currently has more than 3,000 qualified trained chess teachers in its schools.
5. It is proud of its brandy
During World War Two, Soviet leader Joseph Stalin sent Winston Churchill several dozen cases of Armenian brandy as a present. Many years later, in 2013, Russian President Vladimir Putin gave David Cameron a bottle of Armenian brandy recalling the story.
6. Many famous people have Armenian roots
These include French composer Charles Aznavour; Russian grandmaster Garry Kasparov; US singer Cher and celebrity Kim Kardashian West, who tweeted her support for the latest protests.

KALAMATA, GREECE
Kalograion Monastery Silk Weaving
The nuns here cultivate silk to weave some of the fines
scarves in the world.Since its founding in 1796, the Kalograion Monastery, or “Monastery of the Nuns,” has been a female-only Greek Orthodox monastery, housing hundreds of nuns through the years.
This unique complex is home to a library with several rare manuscripts and a room displaying rare icons, sacred vessels, clergy robes, and the mortal relics of various saints. Slightly more unusual for a place of worship, Kalograion also produces the famous Kalamata silk scarves, known to be among the finest in the world.
Within the monastery, you can visit the room where the nuns work to cultivate silk and a weaving room where they hand-make various textiles for sale, most notably the Kalamata silk scarves that have won numerous international awards. Unfortunately, the last nun that knew how to weave died a few years ago and did not pass on the legacy of weaving to the younger nuns, leaving behind unfinished pieces on the looms. The nuns will welcome anybody who would like to stay with them to complete the pieces and teach them.
Throughout its history, the monastery has also served as a local charity and as a place of refuge, coming to the aid of the local population during the Ottoman occupation, the German/Italian occupation, the Greek Civil War, and after the devastating earthquake of 1986.
The complex’s main building is rectangular and surrounds a central courtyard filled with orange trees. It has a church integrated into it and also houses the nuns’ living areas. The monastery was built on the ruins of an abandoned 13th-century church, and some of the remains can be seen near the main altar.
Know Before You Go
Modest clothing is recommended to show respect when visiting the monastery grounds. For men, shorts, sleeveless shirts, and sandals are frowned upon. Women's shoulders should not be shown in church, and skirts and dresses should at a minimum come below the knee. Visitors should keep their feet on the ground when seated as it is considered insulting for feet to face holy images.
Each year the monastery celebrates the Exaltation of the Holy Cross on September 14, Saint Constantine and Helen day on May 21, and St. Helen’s individual feast day on August 1.
