"Jeremy" Wins Big At The VMAs
1993Pearl Jam's "Jeremy" video wins four awards, including Video of the Year, at the MTV Video Music Awards. Pearl Jam responds by not making any more videos until 1998.
In addition to Video of the Year, "Jeremy" wins for Best Group Video, Best Metal/Hard Rock Video, and Best Director (Mark Pellington). Eddie Vedder is nonplussed in his acceptance speeches. "I don't know how you can say it's the best," he says. "It's just a little piece of art, and you can't put art into a competition."
Accepting Video of the Year, the group is joined on stage by the star of the video, Trevor Wilson. "Hey everybody, this is Trevor. He lives," Vedder says, referring to the ambiguous ending of the video where Jeremy's classmates end up spattered in blood (the video was supposed to end by showing Jeremy shooting himself, but MTV made them edit out the gun). The song takes on a heavy topic and is based on a real life tragedy: In 1991 a seventh grade student in Texas named Jeremy Delle killed himself in his English class. "If it weren't for music, I think I would have shot myself in the front of the classroom," Vedder says. "It really is what kept me alive."
The group is much more animated when they perform, with Neil Young joining them on stage as a surprise guest for "Rockin' In The Free World." Young and Pearl Jam, kindred musical spirits, collaborate many more times over the years.
For Wilson, it's his last appearance on camera, as he gives up acting, going on to study international relations at New York University and work for the United Nations. In 2016, he drowns while swimming in Puerto Rico.

Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga received an 8-minute standing ovation for 'A Star is Born'
- Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper's "A Star is Born" debuted at the Venice Film Festival.
- Though the film's debut suffered a malfunction due to lightening, it was praised when it ended.
- Cooper, also the film's director, and Gaga received an eight-minute standing ovation.
- The movie premieres in theaters October 5.
The world premiere of "A Star Is Born" received a warm eight-minute ovation at the Venice Film Festival after the musical drama's gala screening was marred by a roughly 15-minute interruption due to a technical glitch caused by lightning.
After loud cheers and clapping following the end credits, Lady Gagasmiled and looked relieved and director Bradley Cooper said "thank you for staying!" as the Warner Bros. delegation left the Palazzo del Cinema auditorium.
The screening went black about an hour into the movie, just after a burst of clapping greeted the first duet between Cooper and Lady Gaga. When the light was turned back on there was clapping at first, then increasing tension filled the room as a voice said in Italian that the screening would resume as soon as possible. Then Lady Gaga, after sitting very still, began blowing kisses to the audience, which cheered. "You are amazing!" said one spectator, which stoked the clamor.
Sources close to the producers said the glitch was caused by lightning during a heavy rainstorm on the Lido which blew out the projector's light bulb.
Though the interruption broke the film's emotive flow, it also created an intimacy of sorts and will certainly go down in the Venice Film Festival's annals.
Earlier, Gaga in a fluffy pink Valentino gown, and Cooper, sent fans and paparazzi into a frenzy under a light drizzle as the aria "La Donna E' Mobile" from Verdi's Rigoletto played loudly. Cate Blanchett, Donatella Versace and Spike Lee were also spotted.
Early reviews of Cooper's directing debut have ranged from warm to rapturous. Variety's Owen Gleiberman called it "A transcendent Hollywood movie."
Jessica Kiang, writing for the Playlist, said, "It's going to be a phenomenon, and it's my happy duty to report that it's also very good."
The film co-stars Cooper, Sam Elliott, Andrew Dice Clay and Dave Chappelle.

Sinead McNamara: Australian influencer dies on Greece yacht
Friends and family have paid tribute to an Instagram blogger who died in Greece while working on a billionaire's yacht.
Sinead McNamara, 20, from Australia was found in a critical condition on the vessel on Thursday, and died while being airlifted to hospital.
Greek authorities have launched an investigation into her final hours on the boat, which was docked on the island of Kefalonia.
The super-yacht is owned by Mexican mining magnate Alberto Bailleres.
Mr Bailleres and his family had left the Mayan Queen IV boat days before the incident, Greek news outlets reported.
'Life with no fear'
Ms McNamara, originally from Port Macquarie in New South Wales, regularly posted pictures of her travels to her Instagram account, where she had more than 12,000 followers.
In a post last month she wrote: "Living & working on a boat seeing all that the world has to offer. Yep I think I have it pretty good."
Her friends have expressed their grief on social media, describing the young woman as a "free-spirited" and "adventurous" soul.
"You lived life with no fear and it's a blessing to have known you," one friend wrote.
Another said: "Everyone should take a page from Sinead's book - where she was meant to have a holiday in Bali that turned into a year and a half trip sailing across the world."
Several fans also left messages on her account.
The circumstances of her death remain unclear. Greek media reported authorities had ordered that the yacht remain in the port of Argostoli while investigations take place.
Only the boat's crew were on board when Ms McNamara was found unconscious and "twisted in rope" at the rear of the boat, The Australian newspaper reported.
Her cousin told the Daily Telegraph newspaper that the family did not know the cause of the death but believed it may have been a boating accident.
The newspaper reported that Ms McNamara's mother and sister had already been on their way to Greece to visit her when they received news of the tragedy.

U2 tour: Bono says his voice is returning after Berlin show is cancelled
U2 frontman Bono says he expects to be "back to full voice" for the rest of the band's tour a day after a Berlin show was cancelled over a vocal issue.
"I've seen a great doctor," the singer said in a statement, adding that he was "happy and relieved that anything serious has been ruled out".
U2 fans were left disappointed when the Berlin show was cut short on Saturday.
The Irish band had played several songs before Bono apologised to the crowd, saying: "I think we can't go on."
Those at the Mercedes-Benz Arena were initially told there would be a short pause, but were later informed that the show was over. Bono then promised that another gig would be arranged.
In his statement on Sunday, the singer said his "relief" at being able to return to performing was "tempered by the knowledge that the Berlin audience were so inconvenienced".
"There was an amazing atmosphere in the house, it was going to be one of those unforgettable nights but not for this reason… We can't wait to get back there on 13 November," the statement added.
What happened on Saturday?
It was the second night of the European leg of U2's Experience + Innocence tour, which had kicked off at the same venue on Friday night.
Bono had been singing Red Flag Day when he lost his voice, according to those at the concert.
U2 fan Paul Jones said: "During the fourth song, Red Flag Day, Bono's voice deteriorated massively - he said it was something to do with the smoke that was set off."
He was trying to "soldier on" with the next song, Beautiful Day, when he called a stop to proceedings.
In a video posted by a fan of the Saturday night concert, Bono appeared to be coughing and told fans he was "so sorry".
"I'm sure this is not a big, big problem - but I'm going to have to do something." he said. "If people want to go home, that's fine - we'll play another show for you another time."
Bono said he needed a short break "to find out what's happening" but then did not return.
"Bono was in great form and great voice prior to the show and we were all looking forward to the second night in Berlin, but after a few songs, he suffered a complete loss of voice," U2 later said in a statement.
Many fans responded that they understood and wished Bono well.
